  1. I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this- but it is about curriculum-

Why are most of the educational CDs I buy copyrighted so that they cannot be re-sold?

These are disks that I DO NOT download permanently to my computer - but if I were to sell the disk what I have would be gone. I am thinking of the History Through the Ages timeline figures & Home School in the Woods Timetravlors units which I both LOVE - BTW and recently some disks with notebook pages for Geography- I noticed the copyright said it could not be re-sold.

WHY is it not OK to re-sell homeschool curriculum CDs when it is OK to re-sell books???????

I realize some of these companies are homeschooling families and I am not trying ot stir anything up- I just want to know why the difference with CDs and books.

  2. Thanks- I will check out the blog entry-

I talked to the guy at AAS and he said the words were very easy in level one- BUT the rules were what need to be learned -just because he know how to spell a word did now mean he knows why it was spelled that way...anyway I have no idea if I am making sense but it made perfect sense when he said it. I plan to move through book one pretty quickly though...let the cutting begin...

  3. I have been working my tail off on lesson plans and schedules for the last 2 weeks - I am not organized by nature -and we are not getting the amount of work done per year because of it. I am determined this year will be different.:tongue_smilie:

but we wont officially start until the 25th. We rented a cabin in North Alabama and will be gone all next week on vacation then come home Saturday to start school on Monday.

I hope you-all who are starting today have a great day!:001_smile:

  4.

They have a ONE YEAR trial period. Open the material and see what it's like. It always helps to get your hands on the material, IMHO.

Would you son give an honest opinion? He might really like to play with the tiles. I know that my girls love it.

OK! OK! Thanks for the push! :001_smile:

I really think he will enjoy it. I was just worried about starting too far below his level- but it sounds like he needs the foundation.

  5. Is there a trial period on the AAS or a money back guarantee? Asking them to spell while they play with legos isn't the best way to get any focus, lol. If you decide to use AAS, know that he'll probably go through it faster given his age and it will have very good resale value.

Did you show him the materials? Does he like the approach or does it seem babyish to him? Can you try it a bit with him and see how it clicks?

I am not sure about the trial period. I just received it Friday and have not taken the shrink wrap off the packaged materials- I just looked through (read) the book.

I realize his focus was not fully there -I just need to figure out what we are going ot do and order if I need to as we will be starting soon- that is why I went ahead and asked him to spell a few this morning.

I emailed & called AAS and asked for their opinion. Maybe they will be able to get back to me today.

    :confused1:

  6. Well, I just dictated these sentences to him:

By the end of Level Three, your student will be able to write sentences such as:

My dog tried to eat my pennies!

    Babies make me feel joyful.

Please put this in the house.

    She didn’t clean her room.

Light the fire while I fry the fish.

    Her team has thirteen members.

Now keep in mind- we have NOT started school yet and I did this while interrupting his lego building -but he misspelled

    tried- tride

    pennies - penies

    babies -babys

    feel -fill

SO I guess it is worse than I thought! Maybe I do need to start at level one- it just seems soooooo easy......(at least I would not have to worry about sending anything back) I HATE being so indecisive!:001_unsure:

  7. I ordered AAS for my 10 YO and after receiving and looking through the book I realized this is WAY below my DC's level.

He really does not have the problem with spelling that my older two did. While I would not call him a 'natural speller' or a 'great speller'- he is definitely not remedial.... We just have not done formal spelling in the past, and I think this is the year to do it.

Sooooooooo, since I am sending AAS back this morning (I really like the program BYW and think it would be great for younger DC) I am thinking I will go with Sequential Spelling.

I was just about to order Sequential Spelling level one and went back to look at the site- and he can spell all of the sample words they give -for levels one and two- So do I start him in level three???????

I also looked at Mega words -would it be confusing to use both? What level would you start Mega words with? Do I REALLY need the TM or Assessment books????

ANY suggestions or help great appreciated. :bigear:

  8. I love Hake Grammar  I even like the writing part which is mostly dictation and journaling. Saxon math we are well acquainted with and enjoy, I am really excited about the US history program I FINALLY set up lesson plans for using various resources I pulled together (now if it will only go according to plan...) I am glad to hear about WordRoots. I bought the workbook but have not gotten int yet. I may invest in the CD later. I like CKEB now that I have found some supplemental sheets to carry it a little further.

I made a big mistake buying AAS!. I WAY underjudged my sons spelling ability. He is actually not a bad speller at all (rules or not) and this program is WAY below his level. I do like the program and wish I had had it several of years ago. As it is he does remember some of my phonics teaching ;-) after all. I am returning AAS and ordering Sequential Spelling.

WWE is on the way -but now I am afraid it will be under his level too. I still plan to read it -I am sure I t can help me as a teacher..

  9. Postcards from North America sounds fun

and 10 days in the US -seems like I saw this one in a HS catalog- it looked good. Might be because we are doing US geography this year too.

They do not have to be history- DS comes to work with me at a helathfood store 2 days a week. Most of the time it is pretty slow so we have lots of time after schoolwork for games and such. We do play cards a lot too.

I think I am going to get Set- I don’t know why I have never tried that one. I just wanted suggestion for what everyone though was fun. You know how you buy some and they are never as fun to play as what you thought they would be.

    Thanks!

  10. Homeschooling 11th year -most of these used with older two boys (I am trying not to ruin it for youngest LOL) Writing Strands, WIN, The Write Source, Writers Inc., The Write Stuff Adventure, WriteShop, LLATL If Your Trying To Teach Kids How To Write, Jump In- I am sure there were more....

So far with 10YO mostly copy work and dictation. Nothing to formal and my own way- I am looking forward to reading WWE and evaluating Him to see where he is.

IEW has REALLY caught my interest. What Grade levels is it for? Maybe that is another thread.... I am also interest in Bravewriter... but not for this year.

  11. I have 10 YO who’s birthday is at the end of September. I consider him 6th grade- though some subjects I don’t mind taking slow.

Bible -The Bible (we just read a chapter and discuss together), Don’t Check Your Brains at the Door (Christian Evidences), personal devo time, Created for Work (character)

Math Saxon 65 (I don’t plan to give him Algebra before 9th grade- so we are in Saxon 65 this year, 76 for 7th, and pre Algebra for 8th -switching from Saxon to TT.)

    Language Arts

    Reading (Various selections)

    Spelling -AAS

    Vocabulary -EFTRU; Word Roots

Grammar -Hake Grammar & Writing 6

Writing -WWE, and Hake Grammar & Writing

Science CKEB (someone posted the other day this is slightly simplistic- and it could be for a 6th grader- though it gives a great overview of biology. I found a Yahoo group about this book that had lots of great worksheets in the files to make it 'more' for a 6th grader.

    Social Studies -

US History -VP Cards and CD, Notebooking, Teaching Co videos, timeline notebook, History of US, A Childs Story of America, lots of library books

US Geography Notebooking- using a great CD from www.holdthatthought.com , tape of song to memorize state caps.

He plays the drums, but wants a guitar so lessons will start in that direction soon.

We do listen to some classical music and look though art books from time to time- casually

We have not done a formal logic class -but am considering it. We do play a lot of educational games. We love Hail to the Chief & Letterflip. He also plays baseball and football- but I do not really consider that school. He is on a dramma team at church.

  12. I am thinking about using Veritas Press flash card and maybe the song CD as we study American History this year. (the 5th and 6th grade set) Expolration through Current -though I am not sure how far we will get in a year.

Can anyone who had used them give me some opponions?

Do I NEED the homeschool TM too?

How about using the CD with a 10YO that is starting to feel the need to be 'cool' :tongue_smilie:?

We will be studying American History this year using various resources; making a notebook of copywork and dictation as well as working on a timeline, reading historical fiction, watching Teaching Company videos...Do I need these cards to pull it all together??? I keep thinking I am all through shopping (Ha, Ha)

Thanks for any enabling -whoops- I mean help! Melody

  13. I looked at these cards- and I like them. I am pulling together a study in American History also this year (10YO).

We will be making a notebook to keep track of the things we learn (copywork, dictation, ect) We will also be filling in a timeline book. I have some videos from The Teaching Co. I am really not going with a 'spine' text. But looking for different resources covering each period. We will use lots of library books for reading assignments. I did buy A Childs Story of America but have not looked at it yet to see what level it is or ihow we will use it. I love Homeschool In The Woods timetravler series but suddenly DS thinks he has gotten to old for lapbooks:-(

  14. We have the timeline book from Homeschool in the Woods too (very nice BTW) and the figures on CD.

DS did smaller timelines with the periods we studied last year (Explorers, the Revolution ect.) and really enjoyed doing them. I hope to use the book over the next few years to help us remember all we have studied.
