I don’t think this was mentioned, but if someone does a search, it’s worth mentioning Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream in Huntsville. Really tasty and good prices for the size of their products.

I messaged my ds to ask if he'd been there before. He messaged back that we had taken him 2 years ago. My memory isn't what it used to be. 🙃

  2. We did our normal decorating Easter egg traditions a couple of years ago when all the kids were home. Oldest dd and I bought some cascarone eggs, which we'd never done before. She broke it on ds's head. To return the favor, he grabbed an egg from his basket, tried to break it on ds's head, but discovered he'd grabbed a hard boiled egg instead. Chaos ensued with each of them grabbing the cascarones and trying to break them on their sibling's heads. We loved watching our adult kids have so much fun!

Well, one year I sent a video to my son of it snowing on April 1. It wasn’t a current video. Fooled him. 😬😁

I sent a video of it snowing in our backyard with the caption about it being 91* yesterday and waking up to snow today. I don't often fool my kids, but I got all 3 of them. One took a screenshot of our local 80* weather and responded that she was confused. 😂

We had something similar happen with credit cards. Let’s just say, someone had A LOT of fun in our name and was opening accounts faster than we could close them.

File a police report. That will help document in the future if the thief does take out loans. They may also be using the SS# for work.

It took us a little time to clear up but anything that can not be proven to be legitimately yours has to be removed from your credit history within a specified period of time (30 days?). The police report can help document the stolen identity. The reporting agencies have made it very easy to dispute. The thief will hopefully quickly realize they have exhausted all avenues with your FM and move on.

We've had someone steal our cc number. I think the woman bought her college aged nephew a gaming something or other because he called UPS to ask where it was. Of course, the order had been cancelled because I notified the company that I hadn't made the purchase. I was able to get various bits of information each time I called either the cc company, the vendor, and UPS. UPS was more than willing to share what they knew with me. 😂

We likely wouldn't know a bank account had been opened under our name until we went to pay taxes or get a mortgage, which is the frightening part. Fraudulent financial issues could cause one of us to lose our job.

Another thought is to open an account with Credit Karma. They monitor two of the big three credit bureaus and are pretty quick to let you know if your credit has been checked (For hard pulls; I don't think they detect soft pulls) and again if an account involving a line of credit has been opened.

I don't know of any way to monitor for fraudulent bank accounts, though, as bank accounts don't show up on credit reports.

Edited to add: this obviously won't help you with accounts that have already been opened, but could help going forward.

We joined a identity monitoring company and put freezes on our accounts. Hopefully that will be enough.

When I worked for a bank recently we advised people to

    - freeze their credit with a credit bureau to stop the ID thief from trying to take out loans. This would also have the effect of stopping additional bank accounts being opened if the bank did a soft credit check. (Ours did, and a credit freeze did stop the account opening process.)

    - contact the Federal Trade Commission ID theft website for assistance in clearing up the ID theft mess.

    - alert any financial institutions where legitimate accounts are held, to let them know ID theft has occurred. Honestly I am not sure what they would do about it - I was in one of those jobs where I had a script to work from and was never privy to the reasons for things.

    - file a police report. Police aren't going to investigate anything (people often thought they would) but as a pp said, it is good for documentation.

I'm thinking the internet bank didn't do a soft credit check, but we now have freezes on the big 3 credit agencies.

I wouldn't have thought to notify other financial institutions. We'll do that tomorrow morning.

Note it takes time for new accounts to show up on your credit report. (about a month) So keep checking --but the fact that these accounts were not there yet means you likely caught it early.

We just put a freeze on the 3 main credit reporting agencies. I don't remember the name of the fourth one, but when I remember it, we'll freeze there, too.

We decided to go with Force Identity (don't want the thread searchable, so switch the 2 names and put them together) to monitor our identities. They require a lot of personal information that, if hacked, would provide a motherlode of information. We haven't added credit cards, bank accounts, or social media. I'm not entirely comfortable doing that. I did like that they ran a scan on my email and brought up several security alerts. There weren't any alerts on DH's email address.

The internet bank is _lly. (I don't want this thread searchable. Put an 'A' in the blank.) Apparently there were problems with their debit cards being compromised. The fraud person dh spoke with today indicated they've had a lot of calls recently about the same problem we're having.

  8. This isn't a credit card issue. We've dealt with those before, but we've never dealt with checking and savings accounts being opened fraudulently. FM said they didn't see bank accounts on the credit reports they pulled today. Apparently this internet bank doesn't require a credit check to open both savings and checking accounts.

  9. In the last couple of days, we have had 3 internet bank accounts opened under a family member's name that the family member didn't open. Somehow, this family member's information is connected with a different family member's email accounts, so she received the emails and notified family member. Family member (FM) notified internet bank that the account was fraudulent, the bank closed the first 2 accounts, and FM locked credit down, We're also looking to purchase an identity protection plan that will proactively look for issues like this. Tonight, other family member received another email from the same bank about FM's just opened account. Normally we wouldn't be notified about accounts being opened under our names except for the emails being sent to the other family member. We've speculated that the identity thief had FM's social security number to be able to open the accounts and the bank is verifying identity thief's identity with the email.

How do we find out if other accounts are opened under FM's name? They don't show up on credit reports.

We realize that if we were to get a mortgage or loan, these accounts would show up and could cause us problems. What other ramifications are there? How do we stop it?

Interestingly enough, the other family member receives emails from FM's alma mater. Those are the only emails she receives addressed to FM, so we suspect the university's student information was compromised.

  10. Your dd chose you to write to instead of her dad. I think that was sweet!

I've never heard of a previous employer needing to fill out paperwork for a job application. That's really strange. Why would a previous employer be willing to complete something for someone they no longer have contact with? Is there another option for a different type of reference?

I saw that tornados hit your state and it looks pretty devastating. Are you affected by them? I'm assuming because you posted just a couple of hours ago that you weren't directly hit.

We have always operated from two banks just b/c the federal credit unions we use will advance us funds based on prior direct deposits if Congress decides to stop paying military salaries (which has happened several times in DHs career). My pay goes into one, his goes into another, and our retirement accounts are separate. It does make me wonder if we need to diversify our retirement portfolio tho.

We have also done this throughout dh's career, though currently we are using 3 credit unions. 2 are federal credit unions and one just stopped being a federal cu and is now a state charter.

Are credit unions safer than banks in cases like this? And is the state charter less secure than a federal charter?

Make sure you go to an actual Verizon company store and not one of their authorized retailer stores. The store locator on their website lists which one each location is.

Seconding this. I wasn't given thorough info from a retail store, but all questions have been accurately answered at the corporate stores.

We had inaccurate info given over the phone so often that we would call back a couple of times to verify what we'd been told before we actually believed it.

I'm new here! 2 people have items listed that I'm interested in buying. One specifically stated in her advert to message her for shipping costs. I have done that 3 times over the past 2 weeks. She has never responded. Yesterday, her advert ended so I assumed that she had sold the books and not deleted the post. I found the items in a different advert and reached out to that seller for shipping costs. She hasn't responded either. This morning, I searched for the items again and was surprised to see the original advert back up. I've messaged both parties through the link on the advert but I wondered if there is a different way to reach them since they apparently don't respond to email or messages.

I wonder if you could tag them here and maybe they would see this thread. Use the @ symbol on front of their user name to tag them. I hope you're able to reach them.

  14. I am in the process of becoming a teacher. I was a teacher prior to homeschooling, but didn't teach long enough to get a permanent certificate. I subbed for about 7 years before deciding to get my alternative certificate. I was able to find a school with strong admin in a class I'm hoping to move into permanently. In my district, admin are so variable. I was at a long term job and was asked to lie to a parent about behavior. That's not a school I would return to our want a full time job at.

I love my current position in a behavior class, but it took this class, the current admin, and the wonderful staff before I decided to take the plunge.

  15. My dad lives high on a desolate bluff in a free range state. He woke up one day to find about 5 or 6 longhorns bulls drinking from his small decorative pond. He didn't know who to contact, so I think he called the sheriff. The owners were eventually located about 100 miles away. By the time they got to my dad's, the cattle were gone again, though they were eventually found, round up, and taken back to the ranch.

  16. That sounds good. When we used the visual schedule, the pictures were on Velcro and the twins had to move the pictures to another strip of Velcro as they went along. I had a 4 year old girl who also needed the "motivation" (?) of taking a popsicle stick to put in a container next to the schedule when she checked it. The Popsicle stick stopped her running away from me.

Could you do a reverse schedule and keep him in the school when the other students are outside? It would be a much calmer, quiet environment. Then he could go outside for a little bit when the other students are inside?

  17. Do you have a chew toy he can wear that you can redirect him to use instead of biting or pinching you?

We have twins at my school who sounds a lot like this student. Even with the enclosed play area, they would try to scale the fence. Sometimes they succeeded. I wish you much luck. I agree a visual schedule would help.
