  1. I haven't read his book, but I caught the last hour of a PBS (?) special about him a couple of years ago. All very well and good; I'm sure he's a fabuuuu teacher, but as a former public school teacher, I'm really left with a few questions:

    1. WHY does the administration seem to give him carte blanche? That's just not realistic.

    2. How must his wife/kids feel? From the documentary I saw, it sure seemed like his family came second to his classroom. Maybe that's an unfair assumption on my part, but there's no way that he could fit all he does into a 40 or even 70 hour week. If I were his family, I'd be more than a little miffed at playing second fiddle all the time.

    3. Does he ever take a day off? Have a sub take over? Engage in a LIFE outside his career?

Exhausting just watching him, and more than a little irritating.

  2. actors and actresses that have divorced kind of get a negative mark in my book. I think it's sad. I used to like Reese Witherspoon, I think she's a good actress, but I guess Hollywood and marriage wasn't a good match for her. Kristine

Do you also think poorly of neighbors, friends, doctors, teachers, etc. who have divorced?

Wow.....I"m not divorced, but I worry that those who are would be offended by that statement.

  3. Hmmmm......I'll have to go through and read all the threads, but where is this function, and how do you know you've developed "a reputation?" When I look at your post, I see your avatar, your screen name, a green dot which means you're online, and then way over on the right a small green square that says you're on "a distinguished road" when I roll my mouse over it. Is this what you mean? Being "on a distinguished road" seems pretty cool to me! :-)

I'm really trying to get the hang of all these new features---- never knew we had the potential to ruin the reputations of others----- eek! Maybe that feature can be disabled? Doesn't seem like it's a change for the better, IMHO.

    Big Hugs, Kristine!

  4. HI there,

My dd has decided to take part in a local Penguin Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. She roped her friend into joining her, but the team needs a clever name! Can you help me think of a clever name for a team of two ten-year-old girls who are willing to solicit pledges so that they can jump into a frozen Connecticut lake, with water temps about 35 degrees?

I shudder just thinking about it!

But they need a clever name, and you gals (and guys!) are the clever-est I know!

    Thanks!

  5. Did the pain start after a particular incident? A slip on ice, a bump, a funny twist? Have they done an MRI to check for a tear in the meniscus? is there any swelling or heat?

As near as we can tell, she fell hard, square on her knee in late September at Hershey Park. A little ice, a little rest, but we were on vacation, and well, try and keep a 10 year old from using her leg at an amusement park!

We continued our vacation, came home, and forgot about the fall. The pain didn't start until about a month ago, progressing to this point, where it's almost unbearable. Weird.....weird......weird.

Fingers crossed that the dr. has some solutions tomorrow!

  6. HI there,

You might remember I posted last weekend about dd's terrible knee pain. After a trip to the ped., x-rays (radiologist says they're "ok" but we're checking with dr.) and bloodwork (normal) we're headed to the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow. The pain has not subsided, and is worse in the evening, during which time she is literally paralyzed by sudden, sharp pains around her patella, radiating down her leg. She's in agony, and the constant Motrin does nothing. Two tylenol 3 pills take the edge off enough so that she can get to sleep. Today I forbade her to get out of her jammies (one of the only ways to keep her inside! :) and made her sit on the couch most of the day, wondering if complete rest would make this evening easier on her. Nope-- if anything, it was worse. Really, it's ripping dh and I apart to see our normally happy, active kid in so much pain.

I've researched all over the internet, and found things like osteochondritis dessicans, Osgood-Schlatter's Disease and chondromalachia, but nothing seems to really fit her symptoms. I'm taking her x-ray panel with us tomorrow, so hopefuly I"ll hear more than "rest and anti-inflammatories" because those just ain't cutting the mustard.

Has anyone gone through anything like this with their kids? I've done so much googling I don't know which end is up anymore. Does this pattern of pain ring any bells?

    Thanks!
