  1. To answer those that ask what is "it", "It" is helping the Iraqi people create the kind of nation they want.

THEY want? From all that's been said for five years, I was under the distinct impression that we're trying to creat the kind of nation that WE want.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and thanks to your dh (and you, the military wife!) for your (collective) service.

  2. ......it takes more than "wisdom and insight." It takes honesty and humility and the ability to recognize when change is necessary, and that's been a problem for this administration as far as this war is concerned, at least IMHO.

As to whether we have the "freedom" to have this discussion, that remains to be seen. Upholding the Constitution doesn't seem to be a strong suit, either! :001_smile: Who knows who is watching! :001_smile:

  3. I say stay put as long as it takes to finish the job right,

    Hi Twinmom; welcome!

But this is my sincere question: what is "the job?" I don't want to sound ignorant-- I"m not, really. I watch the news programs daily and would hazard to say that I"m quite well-versed on this topic. But no one's ever been able to tell me what, exactly, we're "finishing."

    Bringing democracy?

    Making the area safe?

Those take generations. Should we stay that long?

  4. Saddam Hussein did not invade neighboring countries. Democracy was never in peril in the area--- there was no democracy in Iraq.

This war was started because of a lie, and there are so many in congress and higher who are financially benefitting from the perpetuation, while our troops are without body armor and adequate medical care/therapy after they are injured. It's costing this country trillions of dollars, and leaving a debt that will take generations to recoup. Shameful.

  5. I see I am not alone in the "get out yesterday" part, but I am the first to post a why--

We should have never gone there in the first place. We went there under false pretenses (WMD's that didn't exist), Saddam being responsible, etc...

We should have never gone. And if the need really was there for us to go, we should not be trying to instill American Values/beliefs into their nation. Our democracy doesn't even work half the time, what makes us think it will work over there?

    Nope--should never have gone.

Democracy cannot be forced. Iraq has never been a democracy, their culture is not based on democratic principles, and to use military might to force another country to become a democracy is ludicrous.

  6. who arrived in this country from another had a bad attitude about their country; that's part of why they came here.

I think it's those of us who are not satisfied with the status quo, who disagree and engage in discourse and work to change things are true patriots. Isn't that what this country was founded on? Not just blind faith in leadership with which the majority disagreed?

Wow.....now let's watch my negative rep points come flyin' in! ;)

  7. (Swedish girl) with a wee bit of Scottish and Irish on my mom's side. But dad was a first generation American, both of his parents are from Sweden. My Swedish heritage has always been important to me, and I LOVE my first name, Astrid, which reflects my heritage.

But I married an Irish/French guy, so dd is a bit more of a mutt, and the first brown-eyed member of my family! The whole family was stunned that she wasn't born with blue eyes! But they're beautiful dark brown and fringed with long French lashes, so no one minds!

  8. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a coupon code and the suit I wanted wasn't on sale. :banghead: But I hope it looks nice! It's not the one I liked the best; I was afraid the arms would be too long on that one, and since there's lovely piping along the cuff, shortening the sleeves would mean doing it from the shoulder. EEK.

Hopefully it will look halfway decent. I've got to do a lot of presenting and talking on a stage in front of 400 people at the banquet, so though I'd love to wear a turtleneck, sweatshirt and jeans, I think I"d better not. Sigh. I hate shopping for clothes and I hate dressing up. What a loser I am! :001_rolleyes:
