  1. We love our raw milk. Living on a dairy farm has messed with my kids heads. We were at a friend's home in the city and their child commented that Mom had to put milk on the grocery list. My special needs son (age 6) asked where their pitcher was. He offered to go out and get some milk from their bulk tank for supper. I never realized until that moment that he actually thought everyone had a bulk tank of milk sitting in the milk house in the back yard.

  2. We use Bsecure. I love being able to set up different security levels for different kids, plus be able to block specific programs on certain computers where I don't want to have to worry about them downloading music and filling up the hard drive.

The only problem I had was my eldest in bible college was doing a study on other religions and whenever she had to type in something about wicca the bsecure on her computer would freeze up and I'd end up with an email letting me know she was attempting the access the info. I called and they explained how to lighten up one setting and she was good to go again.

Definitely worth the small amount of cash knowing that I can see that all six computer are secure and I can see where they've been from anywhere in the world.

  3. I'm in Ontario and just new to homeschooling, but I'm watching this unfold and honestly I'm worried for Ontario. I've been part of the public school board for 12 years as part of the Parent Council. Five years ago, I had parents shout me down because I warned that our children would be forced to attend gay/straight meetings and to expect the possibility of transvestites to be teaching their children. They didn't not believe me.

Now, every high school is REQUIRED by law to have a Gay/Straight club and if no teacher steps up to run it then the principal can order someone to run it. Even if there are no signs that any children actually want the club, the events must be planned and promoted through the school.

Last year, my son had a temporary Educational Assistant who was in the process of changer their gender. The staff couldn't tell me for a whole week if I should address this person as Mr. or Ms. because they weren't allowed to even ask! So, when the kids wanted help they wouldn't call that person by a name. They'd just ask "Excuse, me can you help me?" Verses, Mrs. Smith can you help me.

I'm glad our MP is a homeschooler. Just wish they'd give him the education portfolio! LOL

  4. I hung craft paper on the back of a closet door. I divide the paper into fourths and had the kids paste our timeline of the Bible onto it. When we aren't doing Bible Time, I can then shut the closet door and the room looks 40% tidier.

Maybe this will work. If it doesn't go to http://tvoparents.tvo.org/ and type homeschooling in the Parent search box.

Nothing to be concerned about. It was an interview with two parents how homeschooled their children. One started in the 70's I believe and the other is a public high school english teacher who's wife homeschooled the kids until highschool age. The third person was from Wilfred University and she has been studying homeschooled children.

I guess I'm shocked that homeschooling was set up in such a way to not be unfavorable. I'm was sure that TVO would be slanted against homeschooling because of the funding they receive from the government and interest groups.

Have fun with starting in a year (although I'd tell you that you are already homeschooling you just don't realize it!) We teach our children daily from the day they are born. All parents are homeschoolers, some just chose to give up that job when their children reach their 4th -5th September of their lives.

I was watching this video tonight and I wanted to get your thoughts.

Apparently I don't follow into the two main reasons for homeschooling according to Ms. Quirke, LOL. We left because the system was failing to meet my child's needs. We felt we could provide a better learning environment for him, and already educators who have been watching us and our son have agreed. This was the best move for him.

Do you think there should be some sort of "standards" put in place for homeschooling?

I don't per se. I think we need to provide our child with a broad educational experience so that they can explore what their strengths and weaknesses are and determine what they would like to do for the rest of their lives. So, at this point, I expose my children to the education they need to head towards a great university experiences someday but I'm just as willing to help them head towards an apprenticeship or other avenue. As they get older the road they are traveling will become narrower as they chose what is important to them and what is not.

    What do you think?

  7. A lot of good ideas here!

One I didn't see mentioned was a "reference" section. We like to have frequently referenced books in one easy-to-access spot.

I was excited to realize that my reference books are at the perfect height for my youngest to reach herself. Duh!! Why didn't I think to do that before. If I can manage it I want to place the huge beautiful dictionary we have on a shelf alone so that the kids can just turn the pages to the word they need and they don't have to carry it around. They also have their own smaller Webster's paperbacks by their desks but they love to look at that old dictionary.

  8. I started with the Dewey Decimal System and then tweaked a little according to my own personal preference.

Each category is a single shelf.

I'm still in the tweaking stage myself. I finally sorted the books into categories but I'm going to sleep on it and see how I like it in the morning. I'd love to get some clip on shelf labels like these: http://www.demco.com/goto?BLS10362&ALL0000&es=20120215221203561258

But I think I'll have to just tape a label to the shelf for now. Hmm, I should ask for the clip on shelf labels for in my stocking next Christmas. My mum loves buying crazy stuff for us like this.

  9. I wrote an IEP for my son and daughter when we left the public school system. I was asked to submit a "plan of action" for the year we left school. I wrote a detailed IEP for my kids. Each IEP is over 10 pages, plus the scope and sequences. I handed my son's IEP to the principal, along with the scope and sequence of each curriculum I had selected for him. My principal sat there read it, his jaw dropped. He looked at me and told me that my kids would learn more at home then he would ever be able to provide in the system. I sat quietly, smiled politely and thanked him.

I have to admit, in side I was doing a crazy, victory dance all over his desk! LOL

  10. I allow my son to use the text-to-speech option, but not all the time. He understands that if i walk up and say pause it, he has to pause it and give me a narration about what he just heard. He knows that I was lurking down the hallway listening for the previous few minutes and I expect a detailed narration.

On a couple of occasions, he saw me coming, realized that he wasn't paying attention and moved the story back to where he started that day and started reading out loud to me. He knows he has to understand what is being said through the kindle because I'm going to test him on it.

I think the text-to-speech was important for him because his reading was so slow and choppy, that he needed to hear words actually put together. Is it the best solution? No. The a real human reading would be better than an computer voice, but it's what we have.
