  1. My son would go crazy if we installed a zip line.

    I'd have a heart attack!

We have a huge yard and live on a farm, so space is no problem. Check with your insurance company, I'm betting they won't like it. You could of course have the neighbor kids have to get parents to sign wavers first before using it. But, I think I'd be more worried about some of the men around here playing on it first.

  2. With my physically disabled child, I require him to write out the question and show his work. We are using Saxon 4/5 so part of the lesson is mental math, he just has to write in the answer. The Lesson practice, he needs to show work and with the mixed practice he needs to show me his work. I will however scribe his word problems. Again, he's required to show/tell a complete thought. Even with his fine motor delays it took him 1 hour 20 minutes this morning and that's with some being goofy time in there. If he was in the school system, he'd get an E.A. to scribe for him and/or the questions photocopied so he didn't have to write them off the board.

I know I'm making things harder for him, but he's rising to the challenge and I won't be there to hold his hand all his life. He will deal with fine motor issues all his life. I'd rather him learn to sink or swim at age 11 then at age 17. Life isn't supposed to be easy and Mommy can't always hold his hand. He needs to learn to stand on his own two feet and run with it.

  3. That is what I think. She does communicate with us about some things, but she hasn't yet reached a developmental level to say, "My throat/ears hurt." I just worry that there is something else going on. She has had a CT scan of her brain and an MRI, both of which turned out normal.

I was going to ask about a CT scan and MRI, glad to see those are done. My nephew is autistic and he developed what we thought was a stym (sp?) he would flap his hands close to his ears, for hours at a time. Very frustrating, you could sort of redirect but as soon as possible he'd start up again. One day my sister asked him why he did that and he told her his ears were hot :001_huh:. She took him to the dr. Sure enough he had an ear infection and apparently has had many of them and no one caught it because there is no fever, no change in appetite, nothing that you would be looking for in a kid starting an ear infection.

So, now when he starts, she immediately takes him into the pediatrician and they start looking for an ear infection.

  4. I just signed up with spelling city. We are starting with the Dolch word lists to review and someone earlier this week posted a link about a free spelling program which had a bunch of the spelling rules listed. So between the online program, the Dolch words, the rules and old fashion drilling, I'm hoping to improve my spelling and my kids spelling.

:glare: But Mom has to learn to spell first, thank the Lord for spell check!

  5. My oldest two are 16 and 18. I spoke with my husband and reminded him that we were planning on letting the two of them go to a convention. It's in the budge ($325 for food, transportation and hotel for the both of them) So, I asked him if I could hire the two kids to deep clean my home. He agreed. So, far they've each earned $25 for the areas they did. They know to save this money for convention. I'll have a systematically deep cleaned home. My job is to declutter and I'm being ruthless, I'm acting like we have to move and pay to have our stuff moved. Between my decluttering FlyLady style and the girls cleaning the house is coming along slowly.

My younger kids are being paid to scrub baseboards and floor grout. They each have something they want in exchange.

Since, I've decluttered in the past, I have time to hang out here on the boards. Life is good. :001_smile:

  6. I have this sinking feeling that this bill will be created and eventually pass in Ontario also. It's only a matter of time. I feel driven to my knees to pray for the families that put themselves in the cross-hairs of attack for their very public declaration of how they will not change their style of educating their children.

It is currently fashionable to attack Christian's and their beliefs. I was disappointed that the Catholic church wasn't up in arms about this more. Since, this will eventually effect how they teach in the classroom. If this bill was created to keep muslims, atheists or feminists families from teaching their beliefs to their children I feel there would have been h3ll to pay. But it's ok and popular, to attack christian families. Which is ironic because isn't the human rights code supposed to protect us also?

At our church we have a huge population of homeschoolers and quite a few public school teachers and educational assistants. Our pastor took time on Sunday night to pray for homeschoolers locally and across Canada, and then for Christian educators in the school system because of this change in Alberta.

I have one family member who doesn't support my homeschooling. She wants us to stop and frankly I wouldn't put it past her to cause me trouble because of my curriculum choices if it meant that either the children were put back into public school or preferably removed and placed in her home. So, I will no longer be sharing with her anything about homeschooling and my children won't be going over to visit as often and definitely not without me or my husband present.

  7. What frustrates me is that I just haven't found one that matches how I do things or think about things.

Exactly! I want something that makes my life easier. So, I don't want to spend an hour per subject per kid trying to get the lessons put into it! I want a program that I can say Math has 130 lessons and we don't do Math on Sundays and Mondays and start Lesson 1 on March 15 and end it Sept 30. I want a program written well enough that it is easy for me to intuitively just start using. I get nervous really quickly when people say there is a difficult "learning curve". I have enough studying to do to keep ahead of the kids I really don't need/have time to learn a program.

Like I said before, I'm probably asking to much.

  8. It may feel funny asking but just imagine if something did happen, about the chaos that your children will be in. I knew growing up that my dear Uncle and Aunt would take care of us if something happened to my parents and that gave me a peace. My girlfriend was told by her mom that crazy foster aid people would come and get her. Yeah, she might have been better off if they had taken her when she was young.

My kids know that we have plans in place and that they wouldn't even be leaving their home, the couple lives next door and they have told us that they would must move in here and keep things status quo until the kids moved out.

  9. Dealing with a screaming, unorganized teacher who made my life frustrating for two years is the reason we now homeschool. I feel your frustration. Follow the chain of command. Teacher, Principal, Super-intendent, keep going up the food chain, LOUDLY. Document everything. Take notes during the meeting, allow them to photo copy your notes and ask for copies of their notes, follow up with actions plans, keep yapping at their heels until they finally listen.

If all else fails, cry if necessary. :D When I realized that I could do better than the school system, I felt empowered. You can homeschool your child. I am living proof! LOL

  10. Yes, xylitol works better at a small theraputic dose (it is useful for tooth decay/mouth bacteria issues as well as sinus and ear infections) but it's not great at 1:1 replacement for sugar due to its digestive effects.

My girlfriend was bothered by the "digestive effects" for about a week and now it doesn't bother her. I never had the same issue. My children haven't had any issues either. Perhaps these effects affect certain people more than others?
