  1. Plantation is the brand I get. I started with the Brer Rabbit molasses because that's all I could find at any of our grocery stores. But then I found a natural foods store and they had the REAL stuff. I brought it home and tossed that bottle of useless, empty carbs as fast as I could. Search around for the good stuff!

How's the taste of the Plantation brand vs. the Briers' brand?

  2. One more question. About the Natural Calm.(Which looks like a good choice), after you add the hot water to it. How much cold water can you add to it? Do I have to drink a full 8 oz glass? or can I just add the 3 oz of hot water, dissolve it and just add a little cold water to cool it? And does it work overnight? I wonder if this helps with menstrual cramps as well? And what is the best flavor?

You only have to add a couple of ounces more, if you want. We have the raspberry-lemon flavor. Pretty good, a little too sweet. The sweetness is from organic stevia. It's the only one we've tried so far.

  3. My son's doctor has him takingNatural Calm for constipation. It's ionic magnesium citrate that you add to warm water. He as been going a lot more since he started this. She sadi that you know you are taking too much, if you start to have diarrhea. My son has not had that at all. It's something to look into.

I take a prescription ferrous sulfate (975mg with 1000 vit. C every evening) and I'm doing okay in the bathroom dept.. Not perfect, but okay.

  4. And remember to be specific when spelling out the hygiene protocol. For a while I was telling my son to please rinse off as he smelled so terribly, yet after a shower he still wasn't that nice smell-wise. Finally, I found out that he thought rinse off literally meant to just jump in naked and let the water rinse over you. Things got better quicker once I explained exactly what a shower or "rinsing off" entailed - in detail!

    Boys....gotta love 'em!

I'm so glad mine isn't the only one!!!! Same thing happened to us this past summer. Seriously, he would actually just rinse off!

  5. Jeannie,

Do you have a link to the story? I haven't heard this one. It'll make my hubby feel better. He just had to do a house clean out for a landlord. His tenant had passed away and she had 18 cats in 900 square feet! Not his usual sort of work (business gets a little slow for us in winter, so he took this job on) and I know he does not want to repeat it!

  6. I love these books! We haven't used the teacher's guide. I think they are pretty self- explanatory. As long as he has a pretty basic grasp of his letters and sounds, try it. If you sense frustration, he might not be ready. We started slow at 3 1/2 and now he is 5 1/2 in Book 1. Books A,B and C have a certain flow to them. My son got used to it and, even though he couldn't read the directions, he would often pull one out and start working on his own. He was proud that he knew what to do. The work style was the same, just with a new letter. And I have to tell you, my youngest is NOT a natural reader. It gave him a chance to get familiar with letters and really grasp them without frustration.

  7. You could have a good friend come over and take it away for you. I absolutely LOVE to get rid of things!

My friends all know it and they invite me over to help them. It's a win win for all involved. Sometimes you

just need to look at it with fresh eyes and say "Really, THIS is what I'm struggling with?".

Think of all the things you have decluttered before. Do you really spend time later wishing you hadn't?

  8. We had to get a referral too, and also they said for Ds to be off all allergy Meds for two weeks prior- he goes next month and he is going to be sooo miserable that two weeks. And of course, I am going to be more miserable from dealing with him!

We've tried random elimination diets, etc over the years, but never any real change in his symptoms. Finally going for real allergy testing is a relief, I had to get off the "maybe it's ----" wheel. I can't figure it out, I guess that is what an allergist is for! He is also having sinus surgery next week, but the constant sinus infections are a result of the allergies, so that won't be a fix if we don't tackle the allergies too.

I'm so sick and tired of my poor kid being so sick and tired! Heres hoping we both get some answers!

I totally understand! It's like a big guessing game! I have kept PAGES of food diaries. I think he must be having some delayed reactions that are throwing us off. We are getting a series of tests starting mid February.

Ihope for you, and for the OP, that you get the answers you need soon. It's too much of a yoyo for these poor kids! :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

    Take care,

    Jessica

  9. I just got in the mail an ad for a new online organic store, vine.com. I think if you contact them as a first-time customer, they may send you a 25% coupon on your first order. Free shipping on $49 or more. I happen to live near a bunch of places that sell organic foods, but I still buy some products online.

Never heard of this before, I'm gonna look at it now. Thanks!

  10. I'm the coordinator for an online food co-op. www.wholeshare .com But, we are only in NY,PA,NJ Conn. and Mass.

Another option is www.vitacost.com, they ship directly to your house. I think they have free shipping if you spend $49.

  11. My boys are over 7 years apart, my youngest is 5. So far everything I've used with his older brother, that he loved, has sunk with the younger one! I used a set of phonics tapes to help my oldest with reading. worked great. My youngest asked me to throw them out- "I hate her voice". I've learned quickly that since they are so different, their learning styles need to be too. This has made a world of a difference! And our days are going much smoother. :)

  12. jessicamcc, we have scary things in common--blood and guts!

(The mag did the job by the way!!!)

So, have you done anything special to raise your ferritin levels?

Should I tell you my older dd with fatigue has low ferritin, too? I have to check her number. I don't think it's quite as bad, though. I have been giving her iron because she's always been borderline anemic with a high RDW that went down when her hemoglobin went up. That's why I had it on hand.

WAAAY too much in common! I'm glad the mag is working; L is doing a lot better with it, too.

My ferritin level was 3 in the beginning. I really scared my doctor! I kept taking iron, but it wasn't helping, I only went up to 7. My one doctor put me on 650mgs with 1000 of vit. c every night. That finally did the trick. (I had changed my diet to try to help in the beginning, but there was no way I could eat enough.) It did take awhile to build up to somewhat normal range, but I felt so much better! Fast forward a year and I was feeling awful again (this past November) and got rechecked- my iron was back down to 5. Ugh! I had been slacking off on taking the iron; since I had gotten better, the doctor was afraid of me having too much. Now the doctor has me on 975mgs with 1000vit C every night. Sigh, but I am starting to feel better. He said it was crucial to have the vic. C with the iron for absorption.

It is very important to find the cause, you need to know why her level is so low. (Ihave extremely bad periods and a did have a bleeding ulcer.) Have they checked her thyroid levels and her Vit. D levels?

My Vit. D was very low- 11. Low iron and low vit.d can be caused by thyroid problems, which I found out I have.

Sorry for the TMI, but I hope I helped. Keep us updated; your poor baby has suffered enough.

  13. I second the recommendation to go off all dairy and other allergens. It is very common for people with gluten intolerance to have trouble with dairy as well. I have to avoid both.

I think a paleo diet would be a good place to start. Try Robb Wolf's book and website. Remember, paleo means gluten/grain/dairy/soy-free, but doesn't have to be low-carb.

I keep hearing about the paleo diet. I definitely have to look into it. I have to say I'm nervous to try something new. Even though he is gluten, soy, nut free (and mostly dairy) already, he is starting to get frustrated with all the changes. But, if it's so much better for him, maybe we have to try it. I hear a lot of praise for it.
