  1. An author named Daisy Meadows has about a kajillion fairy books around that grade level. They are the books that really got my daughter reading chapter books.

Geronimo Stilton are also a great transition book, as use of color, illustration, and font choice in the books tricks the child into not realizing they are actually reading chapter books. This is great if they are intimidated by "walls of text" (even if the walls of text are AT their reading level.)

Other girl-approved books in our house in the K-2 range chapter book: My Secret Unicorn, Magic Puppy, Magic Kitten, Ivy & Bean, Magic Treehouse, Cam Jansen Mysteries, (there's also Cam Jansen Jr. if you need even easier - Mercy Watson is great for even easier reading, too.) Puppy Place, Flat Stanley (chapter books), Hittie's Travels (another series - a bit more advanced), A-Z Mysteries, Doll Hospital are just some that come to mind. :D

IMO, go the public library route. They are not worth buying at this age. Once fluency kicks in they can read a book in 20-30 minutes. Put them on hold at the library and check out 10-20 at a time.

We live literally in the middle of no where ... we use to live in a big city with an awesome library but up here it's a joke...

  2. I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were looking for chapter books. Not quite sure that Frog and Toad fit that bill. But my kids really loved them!:D Me too!

How about the Thornton Burgess books. He wrote books like The Adventures of Peter Cottontail, The Adventures of Poor Mrs. Quack, and The Adventures of Grandfather Frog, ect..

    AL

    yep we got these:)

  3. I want to buy some easy chapter books for dd ... so far I have 'The littles' and 'The Boxcar Children' ... I want free shipping:tongue_smilie: any other suggestions??? I'm looking for something around 2nd grade level .. clean, no ghosts/magic and has a decent plot...

    TIA

  4. When hubby and I decided to dd was ready to learn to read he went and bought a bunch of different instructional books. I've ended up using phonics pathways and we are about halfway through now. I don't think it will take long to finish it.

Anyhow, I was thinking of going through one of the other books he bought. It's a toss up between alpha phonics or OPGTR.

I've done a little bit of OPGTR already with her and I find myself completely ignoring all the parental instruction and just having her read the words and sentences. Does anyone else do this?

I'm leaning towards alpha phonics I guess because of it being straight forward. I've heard a lot of good things about OPGTR though ... which one would you choose and why?

  5. It appears to be a pretty comprehensive program and we're really enjoying using it.

I've been wondering at what reading level dd will be at when she finishes it???

Also curious to find out how long it typically takes to go through it (I know every child is different but just curious approx. how long it should take)?

Does anyone here ever go over it more than once with you LO?

  6. Now why didn't I think of doing a search ... need my morning coffee:tongue_smilie: Thanks ... I checked out scholastic book wizard with a book I know she can read with no problems. I can't believe the level though (seems high to me) ... I'm going to do a search on here and see if I can find other free testing methods to verify...

The scholastic site said she's at a 1.9 level .... total newbie question ... does that mean almost at a grade 2 level or is it a different number system?

  7. My dh bought the WTM book a while ago and after briefly going through I've ended up here:tongue_smilie: Love the site ... I want to thank everyone already for all the great information I've found on here!

A little about myself ... I have 3 LO's. This will be my first official hs'ing year.

I wouldn't consider myself completely inexperienced since I've been teaching my oldest and middle child since they were 2 (I have a 5 year old, 3 year old and baby).

Look forward to getting to know everyone:)
