  1. The one I have is abridged ... I haven't read the unabridged version. Maybe that's why there was no swearing and my young kids enjoyed it (it's only 56 pages long with HUGE illustrations). I know this is going to sound bad but I don't think I would read the unabridged version to them ... I don't think they would sit through it.

  2. I'll be the dissenter and say that I did not like this book. I will add we did not get far into it before I got rid of it. The language was very hard to follow, and we read a lot of old books. Also there is swearing in it, which shocked me. My kids were like 6 and 4 when I tried to read it to them and they had the look of glaze on their faces. Maybe when they are older we will give it one more go.

Wow ... my copy had no swearing in it??? If it did I would of either edited it (if it was one occurrence) or else got rid of it. I just finished charlie and the chocolate factory and found a swear word in it ... surprised! Sorry got off topic:tongue_smilie:

  3. I would strongly advise not foregoing the Textbooks. It is where the Singapore methods are laid out for parents and students. This is not a good move.

Oh no not forgoing the textbooks at all ... planning to use it all. I'm just thinking the CWP might be a little difficult for her but that might be a good thing to get her to stretch a bit and work at something that doesn't come easy to her. I was thinking of taking math slow with her and perhaps not finishing the a & b in one school year. She's 4 about to turn 5 ... I spoke with dh and he said just to go at whatever rate she's happy with:001_smile:

  4. I did not get the test book because I can gauge if he gets it or not just by doing it with him. I did get the challenge word problems and the IP. We are in 1B now, and instead of sailing through and finished first grade math quickly, and moving on to 2a, we will work through the IP and the word problems them.

I think I'm going to try the same...dd is pretty young so I'm going to take my time:) I ordered the cwp which I know she stinks at:tongue_smilie: but she's just turning 5 so it might be an age thing...if it's too advanced now I'll just shelve it and try again a bit later:)

  5. Like several others, I would suggest the SE Textbooks and Workbooks, the HIGs, the Intensive Practice books from the US Edition (assuming a child who will thrive on the increased challenge in these books, which can be done "behind" if necessary, and the CWP.

If you suspect your child is one who needs a good deal of extra practice there are Extra Practice books with additional problems at the "basic" level.

The HIGs are very good, but there are a few things such as requiring a complete mastery of math facts before moving on that I would suggest taking with a large grain of salt. Better IMO to slowly and repeatedly build up a child's ability to to re-group numbers in the Singapore fashion rather than truncating the process by jumping to "rote memory." The spade-work of working the math strategies pays off, and (amid otherwise excellent suggestions) the HIG is off the mark on this point IMO.

One aim of the HIGs is to make math education about more than "doing workbooks." There are many ways to accomplish this, but in a tidy package the HIGs suggest some good ways.

    forget the test books?

  6. :iagree:

I use all of the above, and find the HIG is really helpful for lessons. The Challenging Word Problems are a beautiful part of the program, although I typically use them about 2-3 units behind where we are in the text.

I am using Intensive Practice a half-level behind by way of review right now. I found that Extra Practice wasn't need for my eldest; however, I suspect that my younger will benefit from it as she will probably start 1A at an earlier age than her sister did.

Do you plan with your younger dd to go straight to 1a or are you going to use earlybird?

  7. I'm on their website and there are so many choices for supplementary math etc... I'm not sure what I should get. What do you ladies use for grade 1?:bigear:

Also, do I have the basics correct ... I would need to buy

primary math home instruction guide or teachers guide (which do you use)...do I need it or is primary mathematics textbook enough?

    primary mathematics textbook 1 a&b

    primary mathematics workbook 1 a&b

    primary mathematics testbooks 1 a&b

    TIA for the help ...

  8. We're only a week into this hs'ing year and chose saxon 1 for math. It is feeling sooooo slow and am not liking the meeting book at all! I think I might keep going with it to see if it speeds up and I end up liking it.

We're also using MM which I think is pretty good except I don't think there's enough drill for dd. No fun factor either...

Soooo:tongue_smilie: I'm debating whether to try SM 1a or not:confused: If I do give it a try, do I need the hs'ing instruction guide or should I just get the workbook?

I thought saxon was it hands down and now I'm having doubts ... I wonder if I just need to find my groove with saxon:001_huh::confused:

So what are your thoughts on what I should do???

    TIA
