I agree education unboxed is great but my kids are not too excited to watch it.  I'm looking for something they'll enjoy watching and learn from.

I was wondering if anyone on here has found any good youtube videos that explain elementary math topics to kids.  I know there is the khan academy one's for singapore 3.  Any others that go over topics like area, perimeter, addition with regrouping, fractions etc...?

With sumdog you can choose which operation they can work on and what level (I believe these options are on the left side of the screen before you choose which game to play).  My kids also enjoy the games on sheppard software (free), morestarfall.com for my younger ones and both my 6 and 8 year old like Reflex Math.

My little one's enjoy playing sumdog (we use the free version), there's also sheppard software.  I found regularly practicing to be important for my little one's.  Are you doing a bit each day?  How about c-rods and using the ideas from the education unboxed videos?  Sorry if I sound rambly.... hope you find something that clicks :001_smile:

I started her at 1 and with no keyboarding experience it's been a good choice.  I believe you have to buy a license for each child...you can't go back and repeat levels.

I've been doing level1 with dd7 for approx, a week.  She came into it knowing how to use a mouse but no other keyboarding skills.  So far it's had her practice mouse skills (super easy), home row and top row.  I'm impressed with how well she's doing with proper finger placement.  She seems to enjoy doing it.  I don't know if a 4th grader might find it 'babyish'.

For getting facts down with my kiddos I have them play on Reflex, Sumdog (free), Sheppard Software.  I also just got a simple 3 coil notebook and write out a bunch of questions for them to do.  DD is working on her multiplication/division facts.  We are using Singapore.  I just went through the work she previously finished...looked for where she was weak and used a cheap coiled notebook and copied out the questions from the textbook & workbook.  It's working well for us.

[Advice Needed: 4yr Old Going Through "Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading"]

My 3rd child knew letter sounds from a very early age.  When she turned 3 I figured I would try blending with her.  Although she had all her letter sounds down pat, she just couldn't make the jump to blending.  I left it alone for approx. 6 months.  She now is ready and gets the blending idea.  I've used readingbear.org, starfall and she's now started readingeggs.com.  I find with my kids that if they don't get something, the best thing has been to set it aside for a while and come back later. 

[Phonics]

I used up to level 2 with my second child (he was 4 at the time) and then just had him start reading books.  Now at 5 he reads books like 'Boxcar Children' with no problems.  He was a 'natural' reader...sounds like your dd is too.  I would just start her on books that she'll enjoy.  My dd liked readers like Fancy Nancy (has some big vocabulary words for kids to learn), Nate the Great and other 'I Can Read' books.

[AAR and LoE Foundations questions...]

I have no experience with LOE foundations.  I got the AAR pre-reading level and didn't use it... I really didn't like it.  AAR 1 & 2 I really enjoy but they are for kids that know their letter sounds.  I used the Leap Frog Letter DVD to teach all 4 of my kiddos letter sounds (my 2 year old has even got them all down pat).

Readingeggs was fun and taught phonics with my older 2.  I plan to start my soon to be 4 year old on it in a few months.

I have a home membership.  As far as I know it doesn't monitor progress or what they worked on.  You can have 2 work at the same time (I can't remember how many computers you get to authorize but it is at least 2 maybe 3).  I have no idea what a teacher's subscription entails.  We have both reading eggs and morestarfall.  Reading eggs is far superior for reading instruction imo but I love all the math stuff on morestarfall.  Both excellent sites imo.

Why not just endure phonics pathways to teach the initial and final blends. Maybe make it more fun by doing it on a whiteboard and having him erase them as he reads them.  readingbear.org teaches the blends using video with a teacher demonstrating...it's free there's nothing to lose trying it.  If you decide to try the reading eggs trial, you could do the assessment test so that most of the levels unlock and then just have him do the one's with blends (I don't know if there's a way to know which map deals with blends).

I also found PAL to be too sight word dependent with little phonics instruction.  With my first little one I just toughed my way through phonics pathways until she was fluent enough to take off reading on her own.  It was a boring program but effective for us.  With my second we use AAR and it was more enjoyable for both of us.  I agree it's pricey.  What really helped both my kiddos was the online program reading eggs.  It teaches phonics, blending, sight words.  My kids really enjoyed themselves and I found it to be a painless way to learn to read.  I think they offer a free trial.

I would just get the teacher's manual and whiteboard...I don't use the tiles or the cards.  I have a cheap coil notebook and to use for dictation and have a big whiteboard for me to demonstrate and have them do some practice.  Crimson wife is right that the beginning of level 2 does a quick review of level one.  If you have a rising k'er I would just get the teacher's manual's for level 1 & 2. I have a 7 & 5 year old and have never used the tiles.  I've tried them a few times but they just end up a mess all over the floor for me to clean up.  I have 2 younger one's in addition so that might be a factor though;p

Yeah I've read that but she has headaches all the time...even when she was just on the dilantin and it was at first keeping her seizures until control (it's not working now even they upped her dose and have done blood work to see if the levels are right). 

 

I hate that you need a referral to see a neurologist.  I asked my sister if she would be willing to take her to a different hospital ER to be seen and hopefully get a referral to someone new.
