  1. Hunter, did you end up creating one of these? I love the sound of it. I make a "thinking book" each year. I start it when I begin planning for the new school year. It contains lists, inspiring quotes, anything that I will find useful or encouraging for the year ahead. I add to it over the year. I really like this idea of a teaching commonplace book. Off to mull!
  2. I need to pare things back. Because things just are not getting done here, in as consistent a fashion as I would like. We shall do spelling separately and I will perhaps look at diagramming for my 11 yo later in the year... We also have our Shakespeare memory work (plus times tables & science memory work) We have regular poetry tea & artist study tea, so I will keep those as I have planned out my picture study for the rest of the year. I am afraid I cannot convince you with the R&S as I have not used it. :) I am very drawn to this for its gentleness & CM compatibility. ETA: when I say *gentleness* I do not equate that with easy - I have read that this is a thorough & deep program. I say gentleness, as in not a huge pile of work to burden us & take us away from our reading...
  3. Thanks for your input. I can easily purchase the Lost Book Classics version in the UK - it is the MFW version I cannot. I can get the download too, but I am hesitant as to which to get. This morning I was leaning toward the download, now I lean toward the hardback edition.... :)
  4. Yes, they look great. I am in the UK & couldn't find a link for them here though.
  5. Thank you They seem to have taken the planing out of CM - style language arts for me.
  6. Be still my beating heart! I have just discovered these books while researching grammar programs. Please could I ask for thoughts from those who have used them? Likes/dislikes, ease of use, how did your children find them? My children are older (8 & 11) but we bang formal schooling at 6/7 so I think these will be perfect. Also, did you find the worksheets helpful, or did you just use the books & a composition book? Thank you for your thoughts!
  7. Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts! What would I do without the WTM forum!! Off to research...
  8. I will keep it short & sweet :) I have two daughters, aged 8 & 11. They would be in grades 4 & 6, but are most likely a little 'behind' as we didn't start any formal schooling 'till around 6/ 7 yrs. We are currently using FLL (2 & 3 respectively) We have been working through very slowly... I would like to have a different program. I need a program as my own knowledge of English grammar is zip... I would like: - to drop grammar altogether for 8 yo, to begin again when she is perhaps 10 or 11 - study for a few years, not year after year after year Is there a good fit out there for us? Thanks for your time!
  9. Good morning! does anyone know if there is a GSWL group on yahoo/FB/ where ever??? I have looked, but did not find anything.
  10. we did have one a few years back. If I remember correctly, it wasn't the best for us, because the animals were not all familiar to us (We are in the UK) but thinking about it, that could have been the bird book, so I must investigate, thank you.
  11. :) We actually have a few of those! I used to read them to her when she was a baby & big sister was a toddler! Thank you for the reminder. If memory serves me correctly, they are more factual than narrative, but I could be wrong. I have actually ordered this for her: The trumpet of the swan I hope she enjoys it.
  12. I am about to finish reading James Herriot's Treasury to DD8 She has absolutely loved it! More than any book before, and that is saying something :) Can anyone recommend something similar? I would like a chapter boo, animal stories, well written & preferably true stories.. Thanks so much!
  13. ..Please help! I am looking for a textbook / guidebook for me to read to brush up on writing skills. Basic ideas, such as constructing a paragraph, essays etc. This is for me to read and refer to, not for my children. Thanks in advance!
  14. Thank you There are some free audios on the site here which i have downloaded & shall be listening to soon
  15. Thanks. I have ordered 'Penguins' & have downloaded the talk
  16. Hmm, I really like that idea - approaching it like picture study :) I do not want to ruin the idea of reading a book, by 'making' the kiddo's write about everything we read. But I do want to discuss with them... Thanks Hunter :)
