  1. Lori, Could I also get a copy of your lists? We are thinking of doing Conceptual Physics at our co-op and it would be awesome to have the list. I have the Lab manual but I don't think we can afford all that equipment. Thanks!
  2. Hi all, My dd who is in 10th grade has finally begun to express an interest in her education! Never thought that would happen. Now she has expressed an interest in an in depth study of Greek history. Next school year we are going to do a year long study of Greek mythology with TTC dvd lectures. But I was thinking of doing a semester of Greek history in the spring to get us ready for next fall. Can anyone recommend so resources we could use in the spring? Thanks so much!
  3. My dd (senior) wants to write a research paper on Hitler and his hatred/treatment of Jews. I have no idea where to start with helping her find good resources for this topic. Does anyone have some books they can recommend to get us started? I am totally surprised because this is the dc who has always disliked history. Thanks!
  4. Thanks for the advice! I think we are just going to skip it since she doesn't need it. :001_smile:
  5. How important is it to use the graphing calculator for Lial's precalculus? My dd was accepted to nursing school and she won't need any higher level math. We are on Section 2.2 of the text and there is a set of problems that ask you to use it. I was hoping to avoid having to figure the thing out and just do the problems in the text that don't require it. Is that ok? Thanks
  6. Thanks everyone! We are so excited here. My dd is a little apprehensive about the rigor of nursing school but I know she can handle it. We are going to visit again since my dh would like to see the school. It has been a wonderful week. :001_smile:
  7. Hi everyone, I just wanted to post that my dd received her acceptance letter in the mail yesterday to her first choice nursing school. It is the best one in our area and the most competitive. It is affliated with our local hospital. We sent her application last Friday and receive the letter in less than a week! We were both shocked at how quickly it came. I really want to thank all of you on this board for your wonderful advice over the last 4 years. It has been invaluable! You have helped me choose the right math curriculums, design great literature courses, and confirm my choices in science and history. For that I am forever grateful. For those of you who are debating whether or not to homeschool through HS, I want to encourage you in that journey. My dd has not always been the most motivated child and she isn't gifted (slightly above average is good). We have had our share of struggles (and tears) over the last four years. I can tell you she is not the person she was when we started 9th grade. I love the woman she has become and I wouldn't have traded this journey for anything. It has totally been worth it! One down, two more dc to go! :001_smile: Thanks hive!
  8. I am currently using Breaking the French Barrier with my dd's (10th and 12th grade). We really like it! We are taking about 6 weeks to go through the "First Steps" part of the text and then plan on 2 weeks per chapter. So far, so good.
  9. I'm SO ready to cry...learning comes naturally to me and I enjoy the challenge. I just don't get the "laissez-fare" attitude and maybe that's why the two of us clash... I am right there with you. We have always had this issue. Her personality is different from mine..... Dawn: How does MUS work? We have never used the program. Is there a dvd lesson and then she works the problems? Or is it a textbook approach? Thanks to everyone for your comments and support.
  10. Hi all, My dd turns 18 next month and I am looking for suggestions for her gift. I am soooooo not good at this stuff. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! :001_smile: Thanks!
  11. I have to say that I truly hate geometry. I made it through TT geometry with my oldest left brained child. She totally understood everything excpet the proofs but we somehow managed to finish it. Fast forward to today. Middle dd, right brainer, is doing TT geometry and hates it. Somehow I thought geometry would suit her right brain (she hated algebra 1). What was I thinking? Today I suggested that she watch the teaching dvd's. Maybe listening to it and watching practice problems would help cement the material in her brain. She adamently refuses. She tells me she hates math and really doesn't care about the proofs and she will just skip them. Math has always been an issue between the two of us. Somedays I just wish it would go away. Thanks for listening to me vent........ I needed that this morning.
  12. I am considering a mythology course for my dd. I would need to design it for her. Does anyone have some suggestions for a spine, works to cover, any supplements to use? I appreciate any help. Thanks
  13. Hi! Been there with my older 2 dd's. Never going back. My ds has never been there. Getting ready to graduate my oldest this year.
  14. Thanks for the positive responses. I am sold. I will be purchasing this for my ds. :001_smile:
  15. Hi all, Has anyone used this program? I am researching options to use with my 7th grade ds who has had very little art experience. This program looks very interesting. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!
  16. I had posted awhile ago that my dd is interested in the film industry. So, I am looking at designing a film history course for her to do at home with her dad. But I need some direction. I found some info online but am wondering if anyone else has done something similar and could offer some suggestions. Thanks!
  17. My dd (17) is taking the following: Chemistry (Apologia) Physics (Apologia) Precalculus (Lial) British Lit (homemade course 7 books, 2 plays, poetry) Writing (co-op class) Gov/Econ (Abeka co-op class) Speech (co-op class) French 1 (BtB at home) Personal finance (Crown Financial Ministry material)
  18. Thanks for the ideas ladies. I am going to incorporate a timeline project for her. I also looked at the writing ideas again and have decided to let her choose between the nation project or several of the writing options in the text. Her writing class at our co-op requires a research paper so we will try to incorporate that into her world history. I will also look into the Currclick history essay questions. I think I downloaded them awhile ago and forgot about them. I am feeling much better today about all this. :001_smile: Thanks again!
  19. My dd will be using this curriculum. I was looking for ideas to beef up the curriculum. For instance has anyone come up with some essay questions to use with the multiple choice unit tests? Are there any projects or papers you require? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  20. Dayle, I posted to you under the post about the Book Samaritan. Chris
  21. Wow do I have lots of stuff to check out! She and I need to talk more about her specific areas of interest. Chris in VA: She absolutely loves all the "extras" that come with all the movies she purchases. She spends hours pouring over them...... Thanks everyone! :001_smile:
  22. My 15 yo dd is interested in going to college to study film making. I have no earthly idea where to start with this. Are there resources we could use at home to study things like writing screen plays, film making, etc. As I said I have no idea where to start with any of this and need advice from the hive. Thanks
  23. For nursing school my dd won't need physics. So after discussing pros and cons of both books with my husband (who has the physics degree and will do the teaching) we have decided to go with the Apologia. He really wants a math based physics for her. Now dd number 2 will be a different story. She may do Conceptual Physics. She is decent at math but really dislikes it. Thanks to everyone for your input. It really helped us in our decision making process!
  24. She will be doing Precalculus in the fall. I would label it as physics on her transcript regardless of which text we use.
  25. I just received Conceptual Physics in the mail and it looks awesome. I already have Apologia Physics and was planning on that for the fall. Here is some background. My dd is going to be a senior. She wants to attend a local nursing school that is very competative. She was told by the admissions counselor that they like to see applicants who challenge themselves. So she wants to do chemistry (which we had already planned) and physics. The Apologia physics has a lot of math where the Conceptual Physics seems less intense. I am drawn to the Conceptual Physics. She doesn't need the physics for nursing school. It will just help set her apart from other applicants. Would there be any harm in using something that doesn't have all the math? Thoughts???? Thanks!
