  1. Is the only way to get access to Cyber Ed is to go through a co-op? I saw pricing in the hundreds! Can one get a personal subscripton? Thanks, Natalija
  2. Is it do-able for a Christian? Or is it heavy into evolution? Anything a person with a Christian view point should know? We can add our own comments about God so we don't necessarily HAVE to have it incorporated in the text, although it would be nice. We tried Apologia General Science and it is not working out well for my dd. I think PH SE will work out better but I am wondering about the content as seen from a Christian perspective. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks! Natalija
  3. Thanks for sharing. That is wonderful!!! :-) Having dc excel in music is a blessing and a joy! Our dd who is studying, performing and competing in piano and has been wanting to try the viola as a second instrument. We, too, are reluctant as we worry what will happen to her progression in piano. (Not to mention the $$!) Yet, she learns fast and she has perfect pitch, which maked learning a string instrument easier in terms of being in tune. She has always loved piano but wants to try another instrument. She is very much a music kid. In terms of a future in music, viola has much better opportunities. Hmmmm..... It's true! One never knows! For instance, younger dd also started with piano but out of the blue said she wanted to learn violin. We stuck with piano for a year and a half then a musician commented that she looks like a violinist! That sparked the old flame and soon she was taking violin lessons! Turns out she is really loves it (much better than piano) and has a talent for it. :-)
  4. My dd plays the violin. If at all possible, I would highly recommend taking violin lessons rather than trying to learn it by yourself. It is a hard instrument to learn as it is, let alone without a good teacher. For one thing, for example with a piano, you know what note it is you are playing (let's hope anyway! ;-) but with violin, you may think you are playing G when you are actually playing F sharp or some other note. That is not unless you have perfect pitch. Once you learn something wrong, it is much harder to go back and correct it. Same thing if you have a poor teacher. You need to unlearn the wrong way of doing things or fix things that were never addressed. Both dds are very fortunate to have an excellent teachers (older dd plays piano) but not all teachers are well qualified. A good teacher can make all the difference. Hope you can find the right solution and learn to play the violin. It is a wonderful instrument! Best wishes, Natalija
  5. We are in Alpine- east county San Diego...wildfire country (survived the Cedar Fire by about 15 ft! Thank the good Lord!)
  6. Hello, I don't know if a Catholic correspondance school would be an option but Kolbe Academy offers a Classical Christian program. I don't have any experience with them or nay other correspondance school but I have been looking into them. Good luck! Natalija
  7. and we have to give back the curriculum in June to our charter school. She is in 7th in CA. I don't want to rush her, as math is her weakest subject. She is taking a looong time with this math. She works daily anfd does 30 problems per section yet gets many wrong, mostly in the word problems. I am not sure what to do? Continue until we have to hand back in the curriculum then buy it so we can finish over the summer? I was thinking of having her continue strengthening her masic math in 8th also and starting pre-algebra in 9th but I worry about getting in Algebra1, geometry and Algebra ii before the SAT's. When do they take the SAT's...in junior year right? In the spring? What about Lial's Basic College Math? Maybe I should get it used...which edition? is 6th fine?...and work on that. Then when she is finsihed she can move into ALgebra 1 (I am thinking either LoF and/or Jacob's..she needs to constant review Jacob's seems to have but loves stories and seems to like the LoF samples I printed out for her.) Is there a teacher's or solution manual for Lial's? We need solutions!! Really not sure how to proceed here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much! 8. It is Catholic and offers a classical education. Good luck! Natalija
  9. Hello! I haven't been on the boards in months but as it is already time to plan for the coming year, I am BACK! (Where does the time go!?!?!?) I need some help please! Math is my 12 yo dd's weakest subject and I need to find the right math curriculum. She is using ChalkDust Pre-Algebra now and is doing "OK". She likes the teacher on the DVD's, but has fallen quite behind. It takes her longer than it "should". She could also daily review, which CD does not have. I do not remember this level of math so I am not too much help. I would like some feedback on the various choices for Algebra: Jacobs, ChalkDust, Foerster, Video Text, etc. (BTW, I am NOT interested in Saxon.) I was reading great reviews on Jacobs but saw that there aren't solutions but just answers, is this correct? That doesn't sound too helpful for a family like us. I was looking at VP's Scholars online math program and am considering it for her. I would think having classes online would be quite helpful, even if though the program itself does not have DVD's like CD that would be helpful. Any other recommendations for math online for a non-mathy student (and family)?? How does one decide when one can't see the curriculum?? Do you any of you ladies buy a couple different ones, compare, select and then return the rest???? I would like to plan her math through HS. Any advice would be very helpful and very appreciated!!!! Thank you sooo much!! Natalija :-)
