  1. I didn't realize they already had new ones, lol. Are they just as good as the old ones? Is that website the only one that sells them?
  2. I want to buy a book of just word problems to supplement our math programs for next year. We used Singapore's last year, but I know they are out of print and not easy to find. My kids really liked them. Is there anything else out that is just as good?
  3. This is constantly changing, but right now I am looking at: Math: CLE Math 600 or 700 (really not sure on this; need to see where he's at) Grammar/Poetry/Writing/Vocab: Michael Clay Thompson Voyage Level Better Sentence Structure Through Diagramming I and II Literature: Literary Lessons From Lord of the Rings plus literature chosen by me Spelling: Soaring With Spelling and Vocabulary Cursive: Universal Publishing Cursive Writing Book G and H Science: CPO Life Science Social Studies: History Odyssey Level II Middle Ages Logic: The Art of Argument Art: Artistic Pursuits 4-6 Book 1 (doing with his younger brother)
  4. You know, I was looking at Sonlight 3 as well, but I wasn't sure how much I would have to change to make it neutral/secular. I am using History Core 2 with my 4th grader this year and it's been easy to make it fit our needs. The science did look interesting. I'll have to take a closer look at it.
  5. I'm trying to figure out our science for next year. I thought I had it picked out (McRuffy for 3rd grader and SYRWTL for 5th grader) but I'm not sure I want to teach 3 levels of science (also have a 7th grader who will be using CPO Life Science). My middle one and I are doing Earth Science this year using RSO and we would like to do Life Science/Biology next year. We want it to be FUN! This is what I have come up with for options on combining the 2 of them (I'll also have a K'er listening in and wanting to participate to her ability): Option 1: Elemental Science Biology (beefing up for my 5th grader with different books) *we also thought about doing Biology on Monday and Tuesday and then doing the Physics on Thursday and Friday (I really like the looks of this program) Option 2: Noeo Biology -have mixed feelings on this one due to so many negative reviews Option 3: Living Learning Books Life Science- don't know much about this program; not sure it would work with my age groups and whether or not it includes hands on; not a lot of reviews that I could find Option 4: Mr. Q's- looks ok but really hate having to print it myself Option 5: REAL Science Odyssey- we are using the Earth Science this year and while we are enjoying it, I'm not sure we want to use it again Any help figuring these out or coming up with another option would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for something from a neutral/secular viewpoint.
  6. The DS that I'm still homeschooling says he hates math (actually all of my boys hate math, lol). We are using CLE, but it wouldn't matter what we used, he'd still hate it. CLE is working so we'll keep using it. He has learned SO much this year with that program. I can't wait to use it with my other boys next year.
  7. I looked and didn't see 3rd grade plans yet. I will be bringing all of my kids home again next year and am looking for ideas and what subjects actually need to be taught (do they need phonics still?).
  8. Here is the most common (for districts that have a cutoff of Sept. 1): Kindergarten- 5/6 (meaning they start at 5 and turn 6 sometime during the school year) 1st grade- 6/7 2nd grade- 7/8 3rd grade- 8/9 4th grade- 9/10 5th grade- 10/11 6th grade- 11/12 7th grade- 12/13
  9. The cutoff date is different depending on where you live. If your district has a cutoff date of Sept. 1 (which is most common), your kids would be in 3rd, 2nd, and Kindergarten. Some districts have cutoffs as late as December 31 though, which would mean your oldest and youngest could potentially be a grade higher.
  10. It looks great to me! You have everything covered from what I can see, unless you wanted to add in logic. I mostly just wanted to reply because I thought it was neat that you have 4 kids that are in the exact same grades as my 4 kids .
  11. My son is the same way. He tries to pull it every day though. I can't teach him a lesson and then let him finish it on his own. I have to actually sit there at the table and keep getting on him to finish. It stinks because I don't get any household chores done during the day.
  12. Thanks! I'm looking into sources for dictation. I will just start small and see where it goes. I also want to include copywork and editing practice (fwiw, the assignment he gave me the other day WAS his final, edited draft; he couldn't see the mistakes). The history fact a day editing book looks like something he would enjoy!
  13. I'm still trying to figure it out. I'll be homeschooling all 4 of them again next year and I keep going back and forth. Right now I have: Math: CLE Math 500 Grammar: Growing With Grammar 5 (still going back and forth on this one) Reading/Literature: not sure Writing: Jump In Spelling: Going to try Sequential Spelling as soon as it gets here Vocabulary: English From the Roots Up Cursive: Universal Publishing Cursive Writing Book F and Writing For Learning Science: So You Really Want to Learn Science Book 1 (still unsure) Social Studies: All American History I Art: Artistic Pursuits 4-6 Book 1 He'll go to an enrichment program 1 day a week next year as well.
  14. Thanks! I guess we will just keep working on it and hopefully it will all click. We tried WWE and FLL last year and it didn't work out. He hated it and it left him very frustrated. Dictation is hard for him because he has trouble remembering what is said. Maybe I'll just go back to copywork for him every day.
  15. I'm thinking for my DD we will do the following: OPGTR (not sure if I need something else to learn to read?) McRuffy Math K Zaner-Bloser Handwriting K Language Lessons for Little Ones I also plan on doing some of Mudpies to Magnets and she loves doing whatever her brothers are doing. She wants to have a butterfly house. I'm doing American History with my younger 2 boys, so I'll read stories that she can understand as well. We'll do LOTS of read alouds. She loves art, so we'll do plenty of that too.
  16. Last time I checked, Amazon had it cheaper than RR. Amazon's price was around $110.
  17. My 4th grade DS doesn't seem to be retaining any grammar or writing information that he's learned. He just handed me a writing assignment and he barely had any punctuation marks in it. He would put quotes for speaking, but that was it. Half of his sentences didn't have capital letters at the beginning and then he would just randomly capitalize words in the middle of sentences. He can barely write a sentence much less a paragraph! We are using Growing With Grammar for grammar and a combination of IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating and Check the Deck for writing. Is it the programs I'm using? Could he have a learning disability? He was diagnosed with ADHD, but could it be something else? He also can't spell to save his life! We tried AAS for spelling, but he couldn't memorize all the rules and then apply them.
  18. People tell me they have a store called Metro here in Naples, Italy that is like Costco back in the States. I haven't been there so I don't know how closely it actually resembles Costco.
  19. Thinking about using this next year with my 5th grader and was wondering how complete of a LA program it is. Do I need to add any other components to it? Thanks.
  20. Thanks for your responses! I found another program, Awakening Wonders, that uses the Science Explorer book so maybe I'll use that instead. Science is so hard to decide on, especially when you want something secular.
  21. I am thinking about using this next year for my 5th grader and 7th grader (both boys). Is it too light? I want something fun but challenging. They will very likely go back to PS the following year, so I really want them to enjoy science this last year of homeschooling. If it is too light, is there anything a non-science mom could add to it to make it more challenging?
  22. I'm thinking I might be homeschooling all of the kids again next year (they were homeschooled last year and then 2 of them went back to PS this year for various reasons). If I do homeschool, it will only be for 1 year and then they'll probably go back to PS, so that has weighed in on some of my curriculum. Does this look like it will be challenging enough to keep up with their PS counterparts? DS12 7th Grade: Math: CLE Math 600 or 700 (have to give placement) Grammar: Saxon Grammar and Writing 7 Literature: Mosdos Press Literature Jade plus literature chosen by me Writing: Saxon Grammar and Writing 7 Spelling: Zaner Bloser Spelling Connections Vocabulary: English From the Roots Up Cursive: Universal Publishing Cursive Writing Book G and H Science: NOEO Chemistry III Social Studies: History Odyssey Level II Early Modern DS10 5th Grade: Math: CLE Math 500 Grammar: Exercises in English Literature: Mosdos Press Literature Coral plus literature chosen by me Writing: Flip the Deck Spelling: Zaner Bloser Spelling Connections Vocabulary: English From the Roots Up Cursive: Universal Publishing Cursive Writing Book F and Writing For Learning Science: NOEO Chemistry II Social Studies: All American History I or History of US DS8 3rd Grade: Math: CLE Math 300 Grammar: MCT Grammar Island Handwriting: Universal Publishing Manuscript Review and Intro to Cursive and Beginning Cursive Reading: Various books I assign Writing: Discover the Deck Spelling: Zaner Bloser Spelling Connections Science: NOEO Chemistry II Social Studies: Complete Book of US History DD5 Kindergarten: Phonics and Reading: McRuffy Language Arts Math: Singapore Earlybird K Standards Edition or McRuffy Math K or Rightstart A Handwriting: Universal Publishing Getting Ready to Write and My Word Book Lots of Read Alouds
  23. I am SO happy to hear that! My DH will have his Bachelor's degree come June and I've only had a small amount of college. I don't mind the testing, as my DH likes us to do that anyway. Thank you so much for the responses.
  24. I have read the requirements, but not sure how they can be interpreted. I do not have 45 college credits, but my husband does. Would that count even if I'm the one that will be homeschooling? What if he will be deployed some of the time? If that doesn't count, how do I meet one of the other requirements? If I am able to homeschool my children, we would be arriving in October. Is that too late to find one of the courses to take? Also, do they offer umbrella type programs that I could register with? I would appreciate any help I can get on this. There aren't any rules or regulations where I am currently, so it's difficult to get in the mindset that I'll have to follow rules, lol. TIA
