  1. I see that you are using Apologia ... how's that going?

We are enjoying it! We started in Botany in August and then we started in Zoology in December and we hope to get most of it done and go back to Botany in April. I know Apologia is for K-5, but my 2nd grader gets a little lost in all the terminology. I think it is perfect for my 5th grader. I changed my mind because I decided I wanted to do a big study of Botany and after we started Apologia we enjoyed the books so much we decided to do more of their's. I originally had planned to do some of the ES Bio during the winter. Now we will just hang onto it till my second grader is in 5th grade.

  2. Thanks everyone for the wonderful feedback! I decided not to get rid of it completely. We are taking a more relaxed approach and I also decided to work on topics that I find interesting. So, we are learning about South American for the next couple of months. I just checked out books from the library, plus ones we all ready had on hand, and bought 10 day in Americas game, and a countries coloring book. I didn't make any formal lessons plans, just wrote in "study South America" for two weeks and then I picked 3 countries to study for three weeks after that. We are already enjoying this much better. We started learning about Asia and maybe we just weren't that into it, so maybe just changing the subject matter was the solution. Thanks again everyone!

  3. I wanted to thank everyone for your help with our math problems. After reading post, researching, and praying I think we are going to try a spiral approach to math. I think smaller introductions and better review might help. I just switched my younger DS to Horizon math because he dosen't like to watch the DVD of MUS and loves workbooks. So, I was able to really take a look at the program and understand better how a spiral program works. I also got lots of math books and DVDs at the library to read and watch this week while we wait for our order. I wanted to see if those type of learning tools would help my visual learner. Looking forward to his eye doc appointment to see if that is effecting his school work in anyway. We will go from there.

  4. Great ideas so far!

Something we started in the summer to help with this and we are still using is having them earn points. They earn points for doing extra chores, extra reading, quite alone time in their rooms, etc. They can cash the points in for screen time, a soda, or a $1 item at the store, or a book from my book stash, etc. (I do limit the rewards that cost me money because I can't afford to give out a book a day, and having a soda is a special treat.) During the summer I even put together idependent school activities and worksheets that they did for points. Some days they spend all day doing these things and some days they do nothing. Usually on days they don't do the stuff they have found other activities to keep themselves busy. Make adjustments to make it work for your kids. It takes time to get them to adjust to less screen time, but keep on it and all will be happy in the end.

  5. Wow! to Lori D's post.
:iagree: Thanks Lori! We do have eye issues and your post reminded me to make him an appointment (we go next week). The doc did find something not right last year, but because of things out of my control I wasn't given any information and follow up wasn't done. So, we will try this again and make sure to follow through this time since I know now that these issues can effect school work.

I could respond to more, but no time. I am pondering over all this information.

  6. :grouphug:

I worked better on getting my plans written down on paper. I had several things I wanted to do when we had a free day . . . . . if I don't write it in and schedule it, it won't happen! I worked on that while on break. I am hoping to make some changes to math as I feel our progress is slower than it should be and I am not seeing understanding in my kids that I expect. We took about 2.5 weeks off and just started back today, and it is amazing how well that break changed our moods towards school. Hoping it last for a few months!

  7. DS "K" is in 5th grade and is doing Delta in MUS. He doesn't really understand math. He is horrible at memorizing. So as you can guess we still struggle with basic math. I have tried everything I can think of to help him with math. We do review daily. I don't know how to expain it so that he understands and I don't know how to help him memorize his basic facts.

We are slowly making little progress. We constantly review, we use Xtra math online, and I have briefly tried other math programs (math mammoth and rightstart) to see if I could find a better fit. He is a visual learner.

Any thoughts? How can I make MUS work for him or what do I need to switch to? I have considered Singapre and Horizon.

  8. I think we are going to learn and do some Yoga for PE in January and February. Our library didn't have much of anything, besides that they have a free yoga class once a week. Anyone have any recommendations on resources to help me out. I have zero experience in this! DVDs, books, or websites. Need lot of pictures!

  9. You really don't need to print the guide. It does have website links to click on, so you are going to be using it on the computer. I did print the guide and hole punched it and put it in a binder, but it wasn't worth doing. I print off student sheets if I use them. I didn't use the free animal guide since it really doesn't give much of any information and I don't have a color printer. HTH!

ETA: the student part is just worksheet to do the work, it doesn't have any information, just worksheets.

  10. No expert, but I have a poor speller in 5th grade. We are seeing good result in Spelling Plus. Also, we had planned to use Megawords this year due to recommendations on this board, but he wasn't ready for it yet. So, I would look into Megawords and Spelling Plus. I think there is one called Apples and Pears for the middle grades (and high school) that is for poor spellers. Best of luck!

  11. We are using Zoology 1, but we have the journal and like it. We really only use about 30% of it (we are not notebooking people), but they are really nice. They have lesson plans in it and some extra ideas and book ideas. That is my favorite part. I got them onsale from CBD and I think it was under $20, so I didn't mind buying that even though we don't use too much out of it.

  12. I just took a jump and bought the Horizons Math program for my 2nd grader. We had been using MUS Beta (half way through it) and even though I know changing math programs isn't the best idea . . . . . he just needed a change (and I don't want to get into the why). I think Ds will do fine with the change. I on the other hand, will struggle with this change and I need some help. I have never used a spiral math program (ok we used RightStart for two months last year but I don't care to talk about that :tongue_smilie:) and this scares me. Also, I am not sure how to get started since we are staring mid year. I was thinking of just setting a timer for 30 minutes daily and go through the workbook doing a problem here and there until we get to something new. This may take a few days (or weeks), but we review daily using MUS anyway, so he won't mind. Any other ideas? Or any ideas to make this transition smooth?
