  1. You might like Spelling Power. I bought an older edition used on Amazon. The author recommends it for around 3rd and up, but it's designed so you place the student where they need to be. It's a bit of a pain to get through all the reading and setting it up, but you figure you only need this one book for spelling for the rest of your homeschooling days.

:iagree: I bought the 4th edition new and I hear it has less to read to get started. I have used Spelling Plus too and liked it. Spelling Power is a better fit for us, even with the higher price. :tongue_smilie: It is cheaper at some of the stores so shop around. I recommend it because it is just one book and the levels are lettered, so a fourth grader wouldn't feel bad if they started lower than grade level.

  2. We have been using it for 4 months. My oldest is in subtraction, but for only a month. My youngest is still in addition. They both have struggled with hitting the correct keys. The 3 second is a struggle too. I have my oldest practice his multipilication with other stuff. Just when they feel like they can't do any better, they improve a few points and get encouraged again. It is short, so they part they like.

  3. Those that have used Mathematical Reasoning, tell me more! I am thinking about getting this for my youngest next school year. He will be coming out of Horizons 2. Actually I am trying to decide between Horizons 3 or Mathematical Reasoning and can't decide! Is MR ok to use for a core math program? Can I start with MR 3 for a third grader? I don't see placement test, so I assume it is typical grade level program.

  4. This may be a silly question, but are you teaching spelling as part of the dictation process? I assume this is for your 9yo? My fourth grader does Day-by-Day dictation 4th year every day. Before I dictate to her, she reviews the passage. I teach any spelling that she believes she will have trouble with, and then I leave her to study the passage. When she's ready, she writes it from dictation.

When she writes, she often misspells words the first time, but when we review the drafts, she often knows how to spell the same words. It's like her spelling brain and writing brain don't always intersect in the process of getting words to paper.

:iagree: I use both list and dictation. For oldest Ds we do studied dictation (from Spelling Wisdom). For my younger ds we do dictation for review (out of spelling plus dictation book or made up sentences using current list). I pull list out of several books I have on hand (spelling plus, CHC Catholic Speller, and Spelling Power is on order). I have a spelling problem and like several program.

  5. Thanks for posting this! I have been trying to come up with a math plan for next year. I finally went to the TT website to take a look. I was really thinking no until my kids came over and asked what I was doing. I told them and asked what they thought about they program. I haven't been able to pull them off the samples! Every free minute they have had today they ask if they can go play with the samples!! I have never seen such excitement about math! I guess I will get it for my oldest next year. I told my youngest that he would only get it if I can find it used. Otherwise he could start using it when he is at the level that I end of buying for the oldest. Youngest is always stuck with hand me downs! Budget won't allow for buying two new programs!

  6. He's young and I would just put it away and try next year. My boys have very little interest in history. I don't push it and touch it lightly. I don't want over push and have them completely hate history and never learn to like it. I hope they will enjoy it more in the future. I agree in seeing if your library has SOTW audio and giving them a try. My boys liked it on CD.

  7. Two seperate math questions. First is Horizon math considered above grade level?

Second . . . . . my oldest has been around a grade level behind since third-fourth grade. It is really no big deal, but he has recently noticed and feels discouraged about it. He also has grown in his math skills in the past two months and is ready to hit math hard and "catch up". What do I do to bring him up a level in math?

  8. Well, I'm not a HOD mom, yet. We are doing Bigger next school year. I would say you don't have to finish it. But, I would also make sure that is all right with the child. If they are enjoying it, they may want to finish it. If that is the case I would do a fast track through the rest.

And :grouphug:! I have seen your posts and I can relate all too well to the situation.

  9. I suggest the simple charlotte mason product too! Of course I have just looked at it online. :D Another suggestion is to check your local library. I was surprised to find many art books and how to study art books at our medium sized library. I usually just do a month or two each school year of art appreciation and we just pick out a book from the library.

  10. I try to have my kids do the entire lesson (which is generally 2 - 3 pages), but I only have them complete about half of the problems if the lesson is long. If they miss quite a few, then we save it for a second day and go back to do the other half of the problems.

:iagree: Sometimes we don't need to do all the steps to understand the lesson. Those are cut out! If the subject is really hard we spend another day on it.

  11. I really don't know, but I am starting my 6th grader in MCT Island (next school year). I decided on this because I also have a 3rd grader and I would have to buy this level anyway. Even though he has had a lot of grammar I just don't think his retention is that great and it won't hurt to start from the beginning. I do expect to move faster through this level with him and I am sure I will need to buy the town level before we finish the school year.
