  1. You could keep using MM but get "fun" math books (our local barnes & noble and Target sometimes have math books) that have lots of pictures (and stickers). This could be done once a week or allow 5 minutes everyday once the other work is done. My kids would work towards to use the "fun" books, but all kids are different.

  2. Hard decision! I had bought both to use this year and I keep going back and forth! It has been difficult for me to do decide. I suggest MFW since you are currently using that program. Currently we are using MFW, but just the history portion and part of the bible (just the readings going along with the history). I think both programs are good and it really just depends on which one is easier for you to teach. MOH goes into more detail and covers more topics and I really can't see using this program for kids under 4th grade, even though the program suggest it. MFW is going to be easier to set up and get started IMHO. MOH has a ton of pages to read through and I got lost in all of it. Best of luck in deciding!

  3. Well, I just wrote my own. One or two sentences every day, with line spaces in between to make them easy to copy just below. That's the cheapest choice ever.

I have been avoiding making my own because of the time investment, but had I just done this instead of searching post, searching the web, posting, and reading post I would have had enough time to get it done for our whole next term!

  4. I tried searching threads, but I don't have time to go through all of them.

I am looking for free (I may pay a small price for something I really like and can be instant download) cursive copywork for my 5th grader who needs lots of handwriting practice (still). I have websites marked that you can make your own, but I am too lazy and want to just print something all ready done.

Thanks for doing the work for me! :D

  5. Is there a book around the age level of 7-9 year olds that gives information on all the continents and some information on countries (with lots of pictures)? I really am tired of going through books at the library on each continent and country. Most are for middle school age and some just give so little information. I would love to have a general book on hand and then go to the library if we want to dig a little deeper. Any recommendations?

  6. Spelling Plus was a hit with me this year. It had a great introduction that really taught me how to teach spelling. My Ds finds it a bit boring, but seeing him doing great on the test and seeing less spelling errors in his writing has showed me that this is a great program! He has noticed a change in his spelling too which keeps him from complaining (too much).

Forgot! Apologia Science has been great for my 5th grader!

  7. It makes me feel so guility! I just need someone to tell me that it is ok (I really think it is)! :bigear: My plan for my second grader history really wasn't history but more geography and it was to do Expedition Earth (the $15 one from confessions of a homeschooler blog). I really liked the program, but it just wasn't set up for my picky learning/teaching style. It wasn't getting done. I gave it a break and then decided to download some lapbooks on the different continents and some countries. I've had them for a month and still didn't get them done. I think I am just going to stop trying! I just have a lot of guilt about doing this. I would replace it with more of another subject, so we will be doing the same amount of school time. I think I just need someone to tell me that my kid would be fine if we don't do it or that I better get busy adding it back in.

  8. My kids LOVE Spelling City. I type their spelling lists in and then they spend 10 minutes per day playing games with their spelling words. The website will even test them (DD loves to do this) and you can print worksheets, too (including handwriting sheets using their words). I have the premium membership mostly so the kids could have access to all the games and activities.

I just started using this too. I thought it said you can print worksheets with the free membership, but I can't figure out how to do it. Can someone tell me how.

  9. We are using Spelling Plus and it can be boring! I have come up with other ideas to help with all the studying of the words. I would think an almost 7 year old wouldn't really be happy with the type of studying this program does. My 7 year old didn't like it and he is a natural speller so I switched him to something else that wasn't so intense. My 10 year old has been using it for a few months and I have seen great improvement in his spelling. (We used AAS for 2 years and made no progress and wasted 2 years!) Anyway, here are some things we do to help the spelling plus method seem like fun instead of "studying": write the words with dry-erase markers on the glass door (instead of on paper) while doing the daily practice, or have them paint the words, or spell the words with tiles (Banangrams game). I also have his list on spellingcity.com so that he can play games. My son loves using the computer and so he gets through the daily practice easier knowing that he gets play on the computer aftewards (even if it is more spelling). To make dicatation not seem so stressful I say that it won't be "graded" and we are doing it just for fun. He just corrects anything that is wrong and he doesn't stress about it because it is "ok" if it's wrong. :tongue_smilie:

  10. Sounds like she either doesn't understand or doesn't agree with SWB's writing philosophy. I wish she could lay her personal bias aside and be a little more objective in her review. As for it not being a grammar program, no one has ever claimed that it was.

:iagree:I could tell by reading her review that she really didn't understand the whole philosphy.

  11. MUS has worked for us! It is a mastery program, but does a great job of reviewing! My boys must have constant review and this program does that for them. I have tried other programs, but MUS is the perfect program for us. They have great customer service too. I highly recommend it. Primer was my least favorite, but my son just wasn't ready for some of the concepts at the time and Steve says that all of it will be hit again in Alpha, so I really hit math very light that year. I did buy cheap ($1 bin at Target) math workbooks with lots of pictures for "fun" extra math. They thought it was a fun treat to have once in a while! I also bought stickers to put on complete pages.

  12. I can't believe it is Wednesday already. Not going to have time time to post anything. My camera is MIA for the last 3 weeks! I said something about it over the weekend and my husband found it, but it was MIA again come Monday. Perhaps he should have put a camera on his Christmas list as I am tired of sharing! :tongue_smilie:

  13. Spelling Plus has been working for my son (5th grade though). He needs constant review and that has helped a ton with his spelling. We practice the list words as suggested in the book, lots of dictation (review) and once every 6 weeks we do a review week of words he missed on post test and words that he has forgotten (I find these while doing dictation). I also have his list words in at spelling city for him to review almost daily. We spend 30 minutes a day/4x a week on spelling doing all of this and I have seen great improvement in his spelling (during spelling and outside of spelling in his writing). I got the Spelling Plus from Rainbow Resources and it is for grades 1-6 (I think), so it was inexpensive. The book did a great job of explaining spelling to me and getting me to understand why what we were doing wasn't working and what I needed to do to make spelling stick with him. It is written for the classroom, but we haven't had any problems using it at home. My other son is a natural speller and I don't go to all this work with him, but I use many of the ideas for this book to do his spelling.

  14. Are you signed into your account? Or if you have a gmail account, are you signed into a different gmail account on your computer?

I have the same problem; haven't figured it out yet.

I just got it to work. I went to comment and when I submitted it I got the usual message. For the first time I clicked on the link that said to "log out and log back in with a different account". I did that and it accepted my comment. I only have one account, and I was logged in when I was on my blog, so I really don't understand, but it did left me post.
