1. The Sea of Tranquility by Mark Haddon Flying to the Moon: an Astronaut's Story by Michael Collins (original title: Flying to the Moon and other strange places)
2. We use Saxon and Singapore. The only downside I see to Singapore is not enough practice on new concepts or drill on math facts. We use FlashMaster to drill math facts, and would use it with any program. We use Saxon for additional practice, but only do the Lesson Practice. Every 5-10 lessons, we do ONE mixed practice to check retention. If we had to drop one, I would drop Saxon. In Saxon, it is too easy for kids to learn to work the formula without understanding the process. When they see the same kind of problem presented in a different way, they don't know what to do with it. I could make up my own practice problems.
3. !2 yos is nearly done with 6A. We have used Singapore all through, but supplemented with Saxon because he needs more drill. (But nowhere near the amount of drill Saxon provides. We do the practice problem set for each lesson, and one mixed practice every 5-10 lessons to check retention, and ditch all the rest.) We tried CWP, but ds found them MUCH too difficult. We set them aside, came back later, and found they were more useful for reviewing and applying math skills several years below the recommended level. What's IP?
4. 12 yos is in 6A. He's used Singapore US Ed since Earlybird Preschool (Equivalent to US K4 & K5). He needs more drill than Singapore's textbooks and workbooks provide, so we supplement. He's doing fine. I'd never heard of the HIGs before today.
5. The archives only show the boards as they appeared at the moment(s) archive.org (the Wayback Machine) took a "snapshot", which they appear to have done at irregular intervals. Meaning there are gaps of several months when the boards didn't get archived at all. If anyone runs across my post "We're trying to convince our children they don't live in a 24-hr fast-food restaurant," let me know, but I think it's gone.
6. We solved most of our pencil problems when we switched to Bic mechanical pencils. Because our boys still had small hands and difficulty with a proper grip, we put Stetro pencil grips on them. Pentel sells replacement leads. They don't fit the Pentel mechanical pencils very well, but they fit the Bics just fine!
7. I'll keep an eye out for it while I'm searching for my post. Sort of a Well-Trained Mind Digital Archeology Club!
8. Google advanced search only brings up my question today.
9. All that I remember is that is was about 2003, give or take a year.
10. Some old-timers here might remember me, my name is Daniel Kirk, and I was a frequent poster back around 2001-2003 or thereabouts. I made a post that some people liked, "We're trying to convince our kids they don't live in a 24-hour fast-food restaurant" about my son requesting tacos for a week and then refusing to eat them. I had a copy on my hard drive when it died, and that was several computers ago. I've tried reconstructing it several times, but the results always fell flat. I understand the archives don't go back that far, and I know it's a long shot, but I wondered if anyone happened to have saved a copy all these years? Thanks, Daniel Kirk
