  1. I was clueless that I'm supposed to be paying sales tax on internet purchases. WOW! I thought that was the whole benefit to shopping online---paying shipping versus sales tax.

I really don't care that online retailers hurt brick and mortar stores. Online retailers create jobs, don't they? And the overhead it would cost a brick and mortar store to carry everything that Amazon sells would be impossible. You take a risk buying online that you won't like it, it doesn't fit, the color is wrong, etc. There should be a benefit to offset the risk and to me not paying sales tax when you can't go into the store and purchase it locally should be the benefit. There are not any Amazon locations where you can purchase products in Texas that I'm aware of.

Obviously I don't agree with the ruling, but have not researched it at all. Just my ramblings...

    gggrrrrr..... :glare:

  2. I've taught IEW at a co-op (SWI-A and SICC-B) and I don't know how the theme writing programs are set up, but I thought you needed to at least have already taken the SWI material before going to another level. I could be wrong. If we had students that wanted to jump into a second year IEW course we had them do the SWI first as a week intensive, which is the way Mr. Pudewa did the class on the DVDs. I'd ask the teacher if the US History theme starts over teaching all the dress ups, sentence openers, and units from the beginning or if it is a continuation course. You may also find this information on the IEW website.

My dc had IEW for two years as 4th/5th graders and 5th/6th and it was a great introduction to writing. They had not done any writing practically and it was so painless and they even had fun. This was the SWI-A and SICC-A material. We're doing WWS next year.

  3. Has anyone used Christian Liberty Press Grammar books? There are several levels and the publisher recommends them for 7th and up. I saw it mentioned on this board a while back and now can't find the post.

I'm looking for a review of the program and comments on whether you think it would be too hard for a 6th grader that has done Rod and Staff and Shurley. It doesn't seem too hard. I'd also be using it w/my 7th graders.

I'm also considering KISS Grammar, Killgallon, or a combination of 2 of these.

    Help!

    Thanks so much!!

  4. These are all gross overgeneralizations. Stupid stuff happens and that's what makes the news. The real story is far less interesting, so it doesn't make the news. Most parents, teachers, and schools are doing the best they can and are doing a pretty good job. That's boring, that's what doesn't make the news.

I don't agree. More bad stuff does make the news than in the past thanks to our technology, but it really does seem to be escalating. Do you really think that bullying in general has not gotten worse in recent decades? I think bullying is a significant factor in the rise of homeschooling, although I know it's not the only reason people homeschool, of course.

And what is up with bad kids recording their bad behavior for all the world to see? Not only do they lack common decency, but any brains as well!

  5. Maybe she wants her dc to have an opportunity to make friends with others and feels if you dc were there they'd just pair up. If that were the case I wouldn't be talking up the camp so much to the other person though.

This was my thought as I read the OP. I can certainly understand her wanting her child to be able to meet other kids, but to talk it up like that around you and your dc is very rude.

  6. I read that article earlier today. I just cannot believe any government agency has the authority to do that. Shouldn't the farmer have the right to defend himself in court? This is just so strange. I would really like to hear from the Michigan DNR as to their position on why this was appropriate. I just cannot imagine. If it were me, I would not have killed all the pigs and let myself be arrested so that I could have my day in court and perhaps the pigs could have been saved. That was just my gut reaction though.

I don't understand all the crackdown on farming in this country. Especially the small famers and private gardening. What is up with that?

  7. At what age are they ready to get dragged into a (one-sided) agruement against abortion?

The book is not a "logic" or even "informal logic" book so much as a world-view defense book that reflects and propagates the authors' extremely conservative fundamentalist and paternalistic ideology. Know that in advance.

    Bill

One might think you're saying that to have a Christian world view is illogical.

    To each his own.

  8. Loved Wicked. Nice Work If You Can Get It, with Matthew Broderick is new. If you're a Brooke Shields fan, she's Morticia in the Addams Family. My kids all recently saw Spider Man and loved it. (Are you bringing kids?)

No kids. We are celebrating our anniversary. It's been 7 years since our last weekend by ourselves.

Any other NYC rec's for our weekend besides a show? I'd like to see some museums and of course eat our way through NY. :tongue_smilie:

  9. I think we all have to realize that tablets are in the educational future of our students. I feel that, by the time my son is in college, that will be all that is used (as far a computers go). I love, love, love books; but I want to embrace this technology and use it to its full potential.

If you look at public schools, they are already on this. Some schools issue laptops to their students for high school. I would have welcomed an e-reader or tablet in my classroom. Most textbook companies just have a link that the students can go to, to access their textbooks. No more, I left my book at school, I guess!

:iagree: Especially with the bolded part.

  10. I did get a reply to my question about e-books and digital products from Memoria Press. Here is their reply:

We are working on entering the e-book market, but we are going into it reluctantly. We are all book-lovers here (did you read Martin's article in the e-blast that just went out?), but we do have some young people working here that are pushing us into it! I've been told by Paul Schaeffer that it's a generational thing and that I'm just old or I'd love e-books!

But, Paul is working hard to get us into this market. We are planning for our first e-book to be Butler's translation of the Iliad and Odyssey along with the study guides that go with that book. We'll see how that goes for us, and then we'll move forward from there. I'm not sure what is involved, but keep checking our website, and one day you'll see that we've moved into the 21st century - kicking and screaming!

So if these products fill a need for you, encourage Memoria Press by purchasing them. :) I think those are high school level materials.

This whole idea of Ipads for schooling has got me thinking how I can better equip my dc to be tech savvy before they go to college. I see many public and private schools are teaching their students computer skills and things like that, so maybe it's something we should teach as well. I'm mulling over how that might look, but helping then use these tools wisely and for things other than games seems like a worthy objective.

  11. These are interesting points. However, a college is receiving money for it's educational services and the professor is making a salary doing his job. I, on the other hand, do not make a profit. In fact, and this may not be a strong point, but I could have my dc in public school and not buy even one workbook.

It does seem that the copyright laws are behind the times in many ways. I think that is the main reason we are all seeing the issue differently because it is not very clear.
