  1. One of our cats got attacked by something. I took her in to the vet because she started to smell and had an abscess near her rectum.

The vet gave me an estimate of $271 which included her shots. When I called back later the vet said the wound was a lot worse than he thought and there was a lot of decaying flesh and infection was pretty established. They gave her 2 antibiotic injections and put in a tube that we have been flushing w/betadine. They never called me during the procedure to see if I was ok with additional charges. Now they had to put her under to take out the tube and give her 2 more antibiotic shots. The vet I spoke to w/the second procedure reduced the fee from the 2nd surgery by $290. However, I still owe $401 and I already paid $136, which puts my total paid for this at $537. I would not have agreed to spend this amount for a cat. We love her but she is a cat!

Tell me what you think I should do? I told them I didn't think I should pay for what I didn't agree to. How does this work in the vet world? And thanks for reading my saga!!

  2. My question is, why is the church planning something for the youth on a school day? Shouldn't they plan these events when students are free to help. You mentioned that the students who attend school have to come after school gets out. Why did they not plan this for a Saturday? Why are so many serving opportunities happening during school hours? I know you can't change this event, but if it were me, I'd be speaking to those "in charge" about scheduling these kinds of activities when school is not in session.

The other option is to suggest to your dd that she plan on schooling through the summer to make up for the lost school days and unfinished work. I wouldn't be keen on that myself as that means me as the teacher also has to do "summer school" which I try to avoid. However, I do have a homeschooling friend who does take school work seriously and they school year round so that they can do the "fun things" that come along and not worry about finishing by a certain time. Not my preference, but it is an option.

  3. I wouldn't know what to say -- the box of food just sounds, um...so weird. There wasn't a note attached or anything suggesting that this was intended to be some grand gesture of a gift, right? It sounds like they just kind of dumped some junk on your doorstep? My thought is that maybe you should say something in the note like..."Thanks for the box of food items. We didn't really need any of the items and didn't want them to go to waste, so we donated them to the local homeless shelter/food bank/whatever. I'm sure they will be put to good use."

This!! If you say you donated the food maybe they'll be offended and that will be end of future contact. Let's hope so!

  4. If it were my dc, I would get her on the eye drops as soon as possible. I think I recall that just 24 hours w/the antibiotic drops and you are not contagious anymore. However, I usually treat pink eye w/Similisan homeopathic eye drops and it is gone pretty quickly. You can find it at Walmart and Walgreens. It wouldn't hurt to start her on it tonight if you can get it.

Sorry about the rain. Maybe you can just postpone it? I've done that when I my birthday child became sick.

  5. I just discovered that Apologia has created a student notebook journal similar to the ones they use in their elementary science programs for General Science and Physical Science. I really like them for my dd who will be doing General next year. I think I'll also have my ds use them for Physical as well.

Is anyone else planning to use these?

  6. My boys have competed in a tri for the last 2 years. We learned so much from the first year. That year they had completely inadequate bikes. We got better ones this past tri.

Maybe have her do a little training before hand. A little bit of running and riding her bike around the neighborhood. My boys had been on a summer swim team so they didn't have to worry about that part.

My favorite is going out for pancakes afterwards!

  7. This is truly disturbing. I use quite a bit of Sovereign Grace music for our church music. Our church denomination is PCA (Presbyterian Church in America) and is reformed. I find their music very much in line with our doctrine, at least I thought it was.

Not sure how the SGM church leadership got so many things wrong as they appear to have in light of these cases. It's absolutely disgusting! I can't imagine how these families didn't get out of there as soon as they found out what had happened to their children.

  8. We live in Texas which is also very hot in July. We absolutely love going to Western Michigan along Lake Michigan. We usually spend a week, rent a house, near Grand Haven, MI. Although anywhere up and down Lake Michigan is beautiful. You say you don't like the beach, but what about a beach w/o sharks, heat, or salt water. The only downside is the mosquitos at night, but not usually a huge problem unless you find yourself in the middle of the woods, which we avoid at night. The house we rent is along a small interior lake and it has its own fire pit, canoes, fishing equipment, bikes, and kayaks. We can hike through the state park nearby, see plenty of beautiful sand dunes (go to Silver Lake to ride the dune buggies or go up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. There is just so much to see and do all around there. While there is a fair amount of cooking and cleaning to do if you rent a house or condo, we don't mind as it saves us some money on eating out. If you don't want to cook and don't mind eating out all the time, then that's an option too. I like having laundry facilities so we don't have to pack as much and we get our clothes pretty dirty hiking and beaching.

The best thing is the temps. We've had trips where it got down into the 50's at night and only up to lower 70's for the high. The house we rent doesn't even have central air and it's never been an issue. Even if they are having a heat wave, the high might be in the lower 90's. July highs in Texas are around 100. I love needing a blanket at the beach because it is cool. The kids get in the water, but it is too cold for me.

  9. I didn't look into the bag with all the stuff yet. I've seen 3-D puzzles before and I'm assuming this one has the typical cardboard or whatever puzzles are made out of type paper.

I think I might lay out all the pieces and spray it with Lysol, let it dry and then do it.

    Thanks!

  10. Thanks everyone for the replies. It will be well over 8 hours since they were touched by the infected person if we use the materials tomorrow morning. We'll just wash our hands thoroughly afterwards. It's not like we don't have flu germs already in the house. I've been sanitizing everything and washing my hands a ton.

I don't want to damage the puzzle pieces by wiping them down with wet wipes or alcohol.

    Thanks again!

  11. So this may seem a bit germophobic, but what precautions, if any, would you take if you were using materials that were touched by someone who has the flu? I'm talking about a DVD and a 3-D puzzle. My kids' co-op science teacher needs us to watch a video that we missed in class last week and also do a 3-D puzzle. Then we are to pass the materials on to the next family. We had to miss last week because my DH has the flu. The rest of us have managed to avoid the flu (thank you O-Placebo!) and now I don't want to pick up the germs from handling things that someone with the flu touched. The teacher did the puzzle herself today and is sick with the flu. We could do the puzzle and then wash our hands, right? I've been washing my hands like crazy anyways with my dh sick.

What should I do? It's getting below freezing here tonight. If I put them outside overnight would that kill the germs? Spray them with Lysol? That doesn't sound promising since Lysol kills bacteria and the flu is a virus.

Any suggestions? Am I being too paranoid?

    Thanks!

  12. I don't think a house is worth such disruption and threat to your family as you make it sound. My humble opinion of course. Someone who threatens to come between me and my dc and dh would not get to be near anyone in my family. Period.

What's so bad about where you live now?

  13. Do people that use homeopathic treatments go rewrite the science texts and books they're using for their children to make them jive with homeopathic ideas?

    Really? You're going there?

I honestly don't care that it defies science and chemistry. I don't even give it a second thought. I don't explain it to my kids. I just say, "Here. Take this." That's the extent of it.

There have been countless times when homeopathy worked for me, and not for just colds, flus, etc. Eye pain, finger pain, burns, post-surgical nausea, post-childbirth blues, stomach issues, canker sores, tooth aches, colic in babies, teething pain, on and on and on.

It really doesn't matter to me if you buy into it or not. I don't appreciate the talking down and rude attitudes. Say you don't believe in it, why, and leave it at that. Don't ask if I'm raising a bunch of idiot children.

  14. Looked at a book I hadn't read in years, Homeopathic Medicine At Home by Panos, M.D. and Heimlich. Quoting:

    The Law of Potentization

Each [potency] is prepared by a controlled process of successive dilutions alternating with succussion (shaking), which may be continued to the point where the resulting medicine contains no molecules of the orginal substance. (Here I stand corrected) These small doses are called potencies....

    The Law of Proving

The law of proving refers to the method of testing a substance to determine its medicinal effect. To prove a remedy, each of a group of healthy people is given a dose of the substance daily, and each carefully records the symptoms experienced. Conforming to the standard double-blind method used in pharmacological experiments, approximately half of the test group are used as control and given an unmedicated tablet or pill (placebo). When the proving is completed, all the symptoms that the provers consistently experience, such as dizziness, loss of memory, and restlessness, are listed as a characteristic remedy picture in the Materia Medica.

    End of quote.

This is the beauty of the freedom we have in this country, at least as it stands now. I can take a remedy and gain health and you can think it is snake and mirrors. Why is it such a big issue? I feel safer taking homeopathy than allopathic drugs. I still take some allopathic drugs, but if I can be cured w/homeopathy I use it instead or in conjunction with other medicines and herbs.

  15. Perhaps you don't. It's supposedly the water's "memory" of the substance, not the presence of trace amounts of the substance itself. Indeed, it's likely there's not even a single molecule of the substance left if most homeopathic preparations.

From what I've read about homeopathy there is still a trace amount of the substance in there. If not, I wonder why homeopathic Opium is not legal in the US. At least it wasn't legal several years ago. I haven't looked into it lately.

  16. What it most likely is is a placebo. And if, knowing that, you think it offers you relief, then go ahead and use oscillo. I'm firm believer in the power of placebos to suppress pain and some symptoms.

    1. I don't think homeopathic remedies are a placebo.

    2. As medicines or supplements go, it's very inexpensive and has kept me and my family out of the doctor's office countless times.

    3. Saves me money in the long run and frees up health care for someone else.

To each his/her own, I say.

  17. I began to tackle my laundry room, which is my worst catch-all space. I really want to take out a countertop in there and give myself more space. The coutertop, or any flat surface in my house, ends up piled high with stuff that I don't know where to put. I have 3 give-away bags and one box to donate. Plus 2 bags of trash so far. And I'm getting to the bottom of my laundry, which now I need more hangers for. :confused1: I really like the looks of this for laundry basket storage but may settle for this instead.

Unfortunately, I have several more rooms in my house that need major attention. Hoping I finish at least one of them!
