  1. Can anyone compare and contrast these two options for Algebra I? I'm trying to decide for my ds who had a hard time with Singapore math and did very well with CLE. The incremental, spiral approach seem to help him with understanding and retention. He also didn't do well with "Chicago Math" in an online class at TPS. These things make me think Saxon Algebra I (the new 4th edition that is followed by Saxon Geometry) would be the way to go with him, but there's enough out there about how Saxon doesn't explain enough of the whys, etc. to give me some doubt. How do these two compare?
  2. It's my understanding that the Latin Alive series was based on Wheelocks.
  3. l found these Cathy Duffy reviews, in case anyone is interested: Compares the "classic" 3rd editions to the new 4th editions: http://cathyduffyreviews.com/math/saxon-math-54-through-calculus.htm Reviews the new Geometry book: http://cathyduffyreviews.com/math/Saxon-Geometry.htm
  4. I'm considering a VP math class for my ds and am wondering how the classes work. Dd has taken classes at TPS where parents & students grade and correct the homework on their own and the teacher grades the tests. Ds is taking a class with Live Online Math, and it's the same. What about with VP? Who grades the homework? Does it go into the dc's grades? Also, how do they use the digital tablet? Thanks! Any other comments about VP math are welcome too!
  5. Has anyone use it? It looks like it may have come out in 2008, but I've checked SL, MFW, and Classical Conversations Challenge and everyone seems to be using the old series that incorporates Geometry into the other text (no separate course). http://www.brainshar...axonAlg1GeoAlg2
  6. My ds did well with CLE's method of introducing new concepts in smaller bits and spending the rest of the time reviewing (which I *think* would be called incremental and spiral). We've tried moving away from CLE since they don't have Sunrise editions past Algebra 1, but I'd like to go back to a CLE-like approach because it seems like a better fit for him in understanding and retention. Is Saxon similar in approach? What else should I consider for Algebra 1 this year?
  7. I really appreciate your detailed review!! It really sounds like we should go back to it. I just wish we could continue with CLE after Algebra I, instead of searching again. Is there anything else like it (especially the review) that has a program through high school? Saxon?
  8. Bump! :) My ds did very well with their spiral approach in elementary school, and we switched to other things beginning in junior high. Now I wish we had stayed with CLE because nothing has worked as well. So, I'm considering going with CLE Algebra I next year, even though I know that they don't have Sunrise editions after Algebra I (so we'd have to find something else for geometry and beyond). I will add, though, that I was told today when I called CLE that they are coming out with a new edition of their Algebra 1 teacher's manual that includes corrections they have found so far. They said they were minor, but this will be available before next school year and possibly by May or June.
  9. My dd took Mr. Gray's Logic & Apologetics and enjoyed him -- good class too! (Same teacher as Lego, I believe, and possibly Logic as well.) My dd will probably take the summer SAT review. She had Mrs. Crosby for Algebra I & Geometry and loves her! If Mr. Howat is teaching the world views class, my dd would recommend him. She hasn't taken the class, but he's done a few sessions on this topic in her Classical Track classes. When I asked just now, she said, "He's awesome!" He's knowledgeable and engaging.
  10. I'm looking at dual credit as a way to add "advanced measures" to my dd's transcript, but we are probably going to stay with TPS's Classical Track, which will cover all of her history and English. So, I'm looking for ideas for dual credit classes, especially other than history and English. Also, what options have you found for taking online dual credit from Christian colleges/universities?
  11. Thanks for the responses! If anyone else would like to chime in, of course, that's great too!
  12. Thanks, everyone! Good information!
  13. Is there a way to tell how much we will be expected to pay for college at our income level? Also, what income level is too great for need-based scholarships?
  14. My kids are using BJU with their online classes at TPS, and I grade the homework. It seems thorough and incremental, and I feel confident that they're covering what should be covered in each level. Dd is in HS Spanish 2 this year, and ds (8th grade) is in junior high Spanish 2, which covers the last half of the high school Spanish 1 book. They also memorize Bible verses in Spanish as part of BJU.
  15. Dd says Mrs. Selby for Chemistry! She has Mrs. Weeks for class and Mrs. Selby for Chemistry Problem Solving. She likes both of them, but lately Mrs. Selby has given her some extra help on some problems that were giving her trouble. When she asked a friend last year, she was told Mrs. Weeks, so you really can't go wrong with either.
  16. This is what I just received from Baylor: Baylor will accept all credits from accredited colleges and you may be able to see the specific class they would count for at Baylor with our Equivalent Course Tool - http://www.baylor.edu/registrar/index.php?id=86538 . If you do not see the school or courses your daughter is taking it doesn’t mean we don’t accept the credits – it just means we would need her transcript to be sure. Please let us know if you have further questions!
  17. I'm looking for ways to add some "advanced measures" and am wondering if it would be a good idea for dd to take College Algebra for dual credit. She is currently a sophomore and finishing Algebra 2. She's had As in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 (so far), but her real strengths are in writing and humanities. At this point, she's interested in a college major along the lines of apologetics or worldview. Should we consider College Algebra as a possible dual credit class? I assume we'd need to go to the local cc -- or do you know of another source, such as online? Would that be a tough class for her or the logical next step after Algebra 2? In addition, I'm especially interested to know what colleges think of that as a dual credit class -- favorable or unfavorable? Also, if we did go that route, what other math should she take before graduating?
  18. Will you post what you find out? I emailed Baylor yesterday or the day before to ask but haven't heard back yet. I asked ORU and they would accept the credits. I talked to TPS to ask them to compare the High Scholars program to their Classical Track (CT) and was told that the Classical Track is more challenging. In a little bit of comparing of the books read, it's clear that the CT goes more in-depth. For example, CT has an entire year dedicated to ancient history, literature, culture, philosophy, etc. and High Scholars spends a semester. It also sounds like the CT's writing component is more demanding (in quality). However, we are still researching to decide whether or not to switch from CT to High Scholars, partly for the college credit (if it's accepted at our colleges) and partly for a savings of time (if it is actually less time-consuming than CT). CT is an excellent program, though, and my dd loves it despite the stress she's feeling with current deadlines. So, it's a tough decision! Hopefully we'll hear from someone who has experience with High Scholars.
  19. Part of what we're considering in our plans for next year is the amount of time our kids spend with school work. How many hours a day is reasonable for high school (by grades if you think it matters)? How much free time does a student need? We may have chosen one of the more time-consuming options for schooling currently (online classes at The Potter's School) -- do you think so? Whether or not your kids are homeschooled or in school for high school, how much free time do they have in the evenings and on weekends?
  20. If so, I'd love to know how it's gone for you and your student! http://www.belhaven.edu/high-scholars/
  21. My dd is in the 2nd year of CT. It's a great, quality program! She isn't taking any AP classes with it, but I'm looking into options like that for next year. Right now she's stressed because she's working on a research paper for CT and getting behind in some other subjects, which she'll need to catch up this weekend. As much as we love the program, we are reevaluating everything for next year because of the amount of time her current schedule has required. She is taking all of her classes at TPS, though -- Algebra II, Chemistry, Spanish II, CT, and so it's not necessarily the CT alone that is too time-consuming. I think right now dd is stressed and procrastinating some, which, of course, is causing her more stress. However, she's still maintaining As. What are you thoughts about not continuing? Just to allow more time for AP and possibly dual credit? Dd has loved CT, but it's definitely challenging!
  22. You only have to use the witch hazel when you first switch and not forever? I'm nervous about natural deoderants because or our hot Texas summers!
