II will point out that if you're the type to choose a kindle first book every month, for today ALL of this month's kindle first options are free.  Make your way to the kindle book page and snag all that interest you.

    Thank you!

The Three Investigators! I loved those books, and it was the first time I encountered Alfred Hitchcock. Thanks for reminding me of them. I think one of the three boys had a sister who featured occasionally - maybe that's where the girl came in.

For other mysteries featuring girls, I remember reading a lot of Trixie Belden books, too.

My kids said there was a girl who was in some of the later Three Investigators books.  They think she was Jupiter's rival.  I'll have to look through my set this weekend to check on this.  ETA: Google is faster.  She's a neighbor girl named Allie Jamison and she's in two of the books:  Singing Serpent and Death Trap Mine.

Adding my vote for Trixie Belden ?

  3. My old vacuum just died.  I need recommendations for a new vacuum!

My house is about 1/2 hard surface floor and 1/2 carpeted floor.  It also has two carpeted staircases.

I frequently use the extension hose and small brush to clean windowsills, bookcase shelves, etc.  And the crevice tool gets plenty of use too.  So these are essential accessories IMO.

Dh's requests: quieter than our current deafening vacuum, lightweight.

    My request: not $$$$$$$

It would be great to be able to buy locally rather than order online.  My previous go-to Sears is no longer an option.

ETA: We don't have cats or dogs so pet hair pickup is not an issue.

  4. Sandwiches:

Trader Joe's GF bread and bagels

    Mission GF tortillas

    Udi's bread

    Franz bread

    Baking:

Namaste flour blend (Costco, 5lb bag is around $13).  Disclaimer: I have not tried making loaf-type yeast bread with it.  We use it for quick breads, pie crust, cookies, brownies, etc.

    Pillsbury Funfetti GF cake mix

    Pasta:

I like Bionaturae best.  Tinkayada lasagna noodles act just like regular no-bake noodles.  Tinkada shells or Trader Joe's rotini (both are rice noodles) work great in tuna casserole.  Pacific Foods has GF cream of mushroom soup in an aseptic carton.

Trader's Joe's GF pancake mix is good and quick to make.

Milton's crackers are good.  A lot of GF crackers are crunchy rice but these are more like regular crackers.  Breton has some regular type crackers too.  Glutino makes table crackers which are similar to saltines.

    And... Glutino frosted toaster pastries...

I really do swear by them for ants though. All y'all should get on board for that. Your whole kitchen will smell like cinnamon all summer. I've read that peppermint and cinnamon together deter mice though and I did not find that to be true AT ALL. I now have a very essential oiled chair that the mice still sometimes climb on. Argh.

Please share your essential oil ant deterrent.  Dh wants to use commercial pesticides...

I don't know of any other salons in my area. I'm not saying they aren't there but I haven't seen any in the places I've driven in and out of. Besides, my hair is so short, it's a simple cut really. It doesn't really need to be styled. It's cut up around the ears, the back is shortened and cut close to my head, and the top is either long or layered depending on who is doing the cut. It does annoy me to get it cut too short but it grows out quickly. As it is, I pay $19 for the cut at Great Clips and I think that is still too much for what I need. I don't want to go somewhere even more expensive!

Next time that your hair is cut the way you like it, ask a friend/family member to take photos front, back and sides.  Then you can show the photos to the stylist at your next haircut.

Also, if your stylist used clippers, ask for the number (blade comb).

So, any great suggestions for how to find a psych?

If either of your kids have ever been evaluated for anything, whoever did the evaluation should be able to recommend someone.

If your kids see a pediatrician, their office ought to have a list of psychs that they refer to.  Some of them are likely to work with adults, or will be able to recommend someone who does.  Your PCP might be able to recommend also.

  8. I was so excited to watch that one with my kids.  Then they kept looking at me through the whole thing, and when it was done, I totally got the Blank Stare.    When David Bowie passed, I wanted to watch Labyrinth with them, but when I mentioned it, DS asked me flat out if it was anything like The Never Ending Story.  Those two movies together were so huge to me growing up!  So my kids still haven't seen Labyrinth because I can't bear to have another one ruined!

I would also add Goonies.  We watched that one over and over as kids.  I tried watching it not too long ago and it just did not go well.

I watched Labyrinth with one of my kids recently.  I thought it held up okay.

Star Wars - IMO it was all the messing about with the originals that made it age badly.  There are too many badly remastered moments.

  9. I wonder if the delivery driver just hit the wrong button on that touch screen? If you get quite a bit of deliveries, I’d probably wait and see what the next delivery shows as.

Yes, maybe they chose the wrong option.

A recent order delivered by an Amazon contracted delivery driver to my home shows:

"Your package was left in the mail room. The delivery was received by (my name)."

It was actually left in our home mailbox (regular ol' metal mailbox out by the street) and I was away for the day when it was delivered.  Pretty sure they aren't supposed to leave non-postal packages in the mailbox...

    (edited, pesky preposition)

  10. Is this the first time you have tried to fill that specific prescription this year?

Kaiser may have changed its drug formulary- meaning that particular medication could be in a higher cost tier this year.
