    Thank you :-)!!!

What fun!  What are you going to get started on?

I use a Q-Snap https://www.123stitch.com/item/Q-Snap-11x11-Qsnap/123-2506 .  They come in different sizes.  I have a 6 x 6 and and 8 x 8.  I use my 11 x 11 the most (for the bottom 2 pics posted above) and I have the 1st pic on an 11 x 17.  From being on various FB groups since the fall, people seem to stitch in hand, use hoops, have big Lowery Stands (or another brand).  But...a lot of people use the Q-Snaps.  I don't recommend the cheaper brands at Hobby Lobby and Michaels.  Get the Q-Snap brand.  And...if you find they get loose on you, put pieces of felt, leftover fabric, or white papers towels under the snaps to keep the tension tighter.  You should not need to do this with new ones though :-).

Also, things got crazy with stitchers during the Pandemic.  I mean, you would have thought fabric, floss, Q-snaps, etc. were essential -- LOL.  Actually they really were because they do tend help people with anxiety and depression.  So interesting.  It is for sure a stress reliever for me.

Anyway, the store I listed above is great for on-line supplies and shipping is only $3.49 for any order amount.  A lot of fabric, DMC (price is the same as at Michael's), etc. was out of stock at a lot of places for a while.  The DMC facility in New Jersey was shut down for at least a month.  Things are just now gearing back up and stock is getting better.  Just wanted you to know it isn't normally like that if you encounter problems finding what you want.

    Happy Stitching!

ETA:  If you are doing PP or L&T SALS, they have FB groups where you can post your work and see everyone's color/fabric variations.  Nice, low drama (usually groups).  Both groups are very active.

Thank you so much for all the info!  I am going to do the PP SAL.

I figured I would post some progress pictures.  I started stithcing again last fall and it is my therapy at the moment 😁.  Very relaxing and keeps my mind other things.

The 1st pic is from a year long SAL (stitch along) where a new part of the pattern is released every month.  I didn't start this one until late so trying to do at least 2 a month to be finished in December.  This is a paid SAL by Lesley Teare called Birds and Blackwork.

The 2nd pic is the free year long SAL by Peppermint Purple.  A block of the pattern is released each week.  I am a few weeks behind on this one, but you get the idea.

The 3rd pic is a free year long Quaker sampler SAL by Linen and Threads.  July’s pattern is coming out tomorrow I think.

The nice thing about these SALs is that it gives me something to look forward to every week or month.

I thought cross-stitch was a dying craft, but there a ton of cross-stitch FB groups out there that are very busy - especially since March.

Your projects are beautiful!  I'm picking up curbside orders so I can get started in the next couple of days.

One question for you and anyone else who stitches: what do you use for hoop/frame while working?  I think I have some stretcher bars in the basement somewhere but not sure if they're the right size.

I find that blackwork (mostly all backstitching) goes a lot faster for me than regular cross-stitch, but YMMV. Some people get really fancy and use multiple colors per block, which would slow me down. I am doing each block and its outline in one color, and it goes quite quickly.

I didn't think about that -- it does seem that it would be a lot faster than regular cross-stitch.

Do you mean that you are using a different color for each block and its outline (meaning, one block/outline is yellow, and the next is purple, and so on)?  If this is what you're doing, how did you decide on the colors?

I finished, but need to frame, a cross-stitch project, and I have almost kept up with my SAL from Peppermint Purple (blackwork boxes in a big sampler). She threw in a DECISION border--words?, no words?, which words?--and that is where I stopped. I can triple check my counting and skip it for later, but I just haven't yet. I always stitch from behind anyway (do several boxes at a time), so it shouldn't be hard to catch up.

One of the blackwork groups I joined on FB had a free pattern that I am attempting to turn into a biscornu--never made one before.

We're mostly gardening and doing household projects at the moment, but I sometimes like to sit in front of the TV with some sewing.

I just googled that SAL - it looks REALLY fun!  Part of me really wants to join, and the other part says who am I kidding, where would I find the time for that.  But, if I did the SAL instead of reading covid news online obsessively, I would have PLENTY of time for the SAL...

I'll think about it while I sew some masks today.

Ok, I had a thought on the slides.

Instead of scanning them all up front, I think I will see if I can get a used slide projector and then dad and I can watch them together and he can help me label them.  That would give us hours and hours of time together and something to do for him.

That will also allow me to find the slides we definitely want to get digitized, etc....

This is a wonderful idea!  My dad passed away a few years ago, and left dozens of carousels of slides going back 60+ years.  My sibs, my mom, and I got together and looked at many of the slides -- and couldn't identify numerous people and places.  Wish we'd thought to either go through the slides with Dad, or ask him to label them.

Same thing happened to dh. Some of the slides he and his sibs inherited are marked with year, but nothing else.

  6. Dh goes to the Starbucks drive thru regularly.  I do in store mobile pick up usually, but occasionally drive thru.  Employees are ALWAYS masked.  They hand over the drinks in a container; you take the drink from the container (they used to use a large mug, now it's a plastic box thing) so the person who gives you your drink never touches any part of your cup.  IDK if the container thing is nationwide? Touchless pay with the app.

An acquaintance is a Starbucks barista and she told me the routine she has to go through before/during each shift.  After hearing that, and from my personal experience, I have no worries about getting my iced drink via drive thru/mobile pick up.

My first real job was working at Farrell's Ice Cream restaurant in Seattle.  I worked there for 3 years during college.

I wish Farrell's was still around.  I work with someone who used to work there.

  8. Paper route starting at age 11.  My parents had to sign an approval for me to get the route because the minimum age was 12.  Then babysitting starting a couple years later.  Full-time nannying in the summer at 15 (for a 6 month old and a 4 year old... I cannot imagine that happening nowadays). First 18+ job was dishwasher.

  9. At the doctor's office, I got screened at the entrance to the building.  Then they gave me a mask and a paper that said I'd been screened for COVID-19, and I was allowed to enter the building and proceed to the reception desk.  Also I was told to present myself for screening a certain number of minutes prior to my appointment so there was minimal waiting after I was inside the building.

  10. We don't have a cheese shelf or drawer.  I try to corral the bags of shredded cheese in a plastic box.  The rest of the cheese is scattered in various locations in the fridge.

Cream cheese, cottage cheese, string cheese, sharp cheddar block,  colby jack block or slices (or havarti slices - I alternate), parmesan block, shredded parm, can of grated parm, shredded mozz, shredded Italian blend, shredded Mexican blend, tub of feta - generally we have all these on hand.  Then if I stop at Trader Joe's or the cheese counter, I'll pick up a couple small pieces of specialty cheese - there's an espresso one I'm partial to at the moment.

  11. We are still under stay-at-home and there are very significantly fewer people who would normally be working/shopping/etc in the business/shopping districts.  There are the same number of people hanging out &/or living in public spaces in those areas.  I am very cautious about where I go when I'm alone.

our district is flirting with the idea of online high school only.  uh - that doesn't work for all kids.  Even college kids who are doing all online this quarter - some are really struggling.  (my son had to withdraw, and plans on working with his advisor and hopefully back into it full-time in the fall. - he was told a lot of kids have really struggled with this and many have withdrawn for the quarter.)

For sure, online doesn't work for all kids.  My college kid is managing to do okay in one online class, but will withdraw from the other.  The college cancelled three of my kid's classes this quarter because they weren't possible to do online.

It is likely out of print.  The projects were simple, but clever.  The book contained projects that one could make for travel or over the weekend.  One was picnic blanket that folded into a bag and another was a collapsable hat.

Do you remember where you saw this book?  Seems like I saw a similar book in the Sewbaby catalog many years ago.

  14. I work in a small office that is listed as an essential business on our governor's mandate.  The business is not open to the public.  My boss has arranged so that only one person works in the office each day.  We each have our own desk and don't share phones or keyboards.  At the start of each day the in-office person wipes down shared surfaces such as copier keypad, doorknobs, etc.  We have only a few interactions outside our office (pick up mail at the post office, for example).  Also, most of the other businesses in our building are closed so I rarely encounter anyone.  It is a little creepy to be working in a mostly empty building, and it's lonely at times, but I am not very worried about COVID-19 exposure there.  I have thought about wearing a mask when I go to the bathroom (it's a shared bathroom for the building) but I have never run into anyone in the bathroom since almost no one is working.

  15. I don't think our family is seeing any savings.  I am still working, same commute, so no change in gas money.  College kid had some classes cancelled that weren't possible to be held online, so some tuition refund.  No bus pass fee this quarter due to online classes only.  Groceries are more expensive because of less choice of items -- sometimes the expensive brand is all there is. I'm not inclined to visit multiple stores to try to get the best deal; I get what there is and pay however much it costs and get out of the store quickly.

No music lesson fees at the moment.  I guess that saves a bit.  But we've bought a number of jigsaw puzzles to keep us entertained, and Amazon orders, and stocking up on various items, which all adds up.

  16. Thanks, everyone!

I started the dispute and indicated deception.  I never would have made the purchase if the item description had indicated that it would ship from Asia.  I have a printout of the original listing and it clearly states the item was located in City, State, USA.

With any luck, this will be resolved quickly.

I go out because DH doesn't really know the layout of stores or what we need. He would take too long and buy a lot of weird stuff if I sent him.

This is why I do the shopping.  I make a master list by aisle (I shop for our family and for my mom during the same trip) - so I can be as efficient as possible, load up the cart quickly and get through the checkout and out of the store.  I have always been the one who does the grocery shopping.  No reason to change that now unless I get sick.

  18. In mid-March, I bought an item on eBay.  It was listed as shipping from a U.S. location about 1000 miles from my U.S. location, and stated would be delivered by March 24.  I haven't received it.

Now when I look at "My eBay" the tracking number doesn't look like a USPS tracking number, although it says USPS tracking.  When I looked up the tracking number prefix, it appears that the item was shipped from Asia although the listing clearly specified that the item would ship from the U.S.  I have a copy of the listing at the time I made the purchase.  eBay now shows "We removed this listing from the site. For more information and next steps go to Messages. For information about delivery, view your order details."

But I don't have any messages...?  The order details show "shipment information received" but nothing more.

I've never had an item not delivered before.  What are the appropriate steps to resolve this?  At this point I would hope to get my money back because I think the item will not be delivered.  I paid with Paypal.
