  1. Following. I am interested in IEW, but it all seems overwhelming...DVDs, charts, themed writing...

I agree totally with OneStepAtATime !! It seemed really overwhelming. I am new to IEW and it isn't at all. The website is very difficult until someone pointed me to the Pathway.

  2. I have found that if everything is room temperature, sifted 3 times and measured exactly my bread machine does better even warming egg in a bowl of hot water. Now I have had to increase my yeast here in south Texas where I never did in Alaska, humid vs. dry.

I use Saf Instant Yeast, 1 Pound Pouch and keep it in the fridge, with plain flour.

Bread was rising and falling in the middle when to much flour was used. Not rising enough when sifted and measured very carefully. It was a work in progress.

http://www.kingarthurflour.com/learn/bread-machine-basics.html  I don't use the flour, but the tips sure helped a ton.

  3. We just started early this year. I purchases Teaching Writing Structure and Style with Student Writing Intensive A. I received a ton of pdf's along with it that would make it really easy to use with varying ages. I agree that I would shoot for the middle and at least get Student Writing Intensive B and let him do the teaching.

Although I do love the TWSS as it teaches me how to help them. Writing has always been my weak subject and I have been looking for just this program forever I was just scared of the price. I could have saved a ton. I think both are so awesome ! I will be continuing with the program and already have SICC - A & B in my cart !

  4. Sorry for the dumb question but, there are a lot of IEW products.....

When people talk about IEW, are they talking about Level A, Level B and Level C, or some other product from the IEW company?

I went full shebang. I purchased Teaching Writing Structure and Style for me. And Student Writing Intensive A  to combine my children.

After we complete SWI-A, we will be purchasing Student Writing Intensive Continuation Course A.

I chose not to start with a Theme Based program, but will likely use a few after SWICC-A.

This page helped me see our path.  http://iew.com/sites/default/files/images/IEW_2016_Pathway.jpg

  5. We have gone round and round with latin. GSWL>Lively Latin> Latin Prep then back to Form Latin series. I really like it, Miniscule religion in level 1 or 2. Easily skipped or modified. I really love the drill. But we added Latin Book 1 , there's a yahoo group with answers and text but I had to get the hardback books, for reading and translating on the fly. Perfect pairing in my mind. I am not looking any further for now. We will do First Form through Third Form then who knows.

  6. Everyone loved my mom's chili. She slaved all day long to make it, or so she said. We asked for the recipe for years. She always gave this long drawn out tale. After she passed, I found the secret in a book.

3 cans of Ranch Style Beans

1 lb lean ground beef, browned.

1 can of petite diced tomatoes.

    2 cups of water.

    2 tbs of chili powder

1 large sweet onion finely diced, optional.

Toss it all in a pan, bring to a boil, reduce heat, simmer till onions are clear. Serve.

I don't know how many times I cooked beans from scratch, combined different seasonings, trying to replicate my mom's chili.

RANCH BEANS !! She opened cans, chopped a bit, and played on the computer while we all thought she slaved. LOL

  7. Jana! I have watched you over the years use numerous things and I can't believe that you have never tried IEW! ;) Glad you guys are loving it. It is so flexible, you can follow it to a "T" or you can "kinda" follow it to whatever extent you want.

    Good luck!

I am a curriculum addict, I admit it. This is my 30th year at this gig.

I am still searching for some things, find value in most. It is rarely that I don't learn something. But this is what I have always wanted.

I will likely still look at other things, buy other things.  And even use other things. This is still the most valuable writing tool I have found in all those years. LOL

    Sometimes I am slow. hehehe

  8. We started Latin first this time around, afterfter they finished FLL 3, whatever age that was. With the older kids, I lived and planned to stay in Texas, so Spanish it was at preschool age. I did wait to do reading and grammar for Spanish till about 6th, 5th, and 3rd so I could keep them together.

  9. Things I would purchase again.

    Math - Miquon, Saxon.

History - SOTW, Human Odyssey, A History of US.

    Spelling - All About Spelling.

Latin - Getting Started with Latin, Form Latin from Memoria Press.

Language Arts - First Language Lessons, Writing With Ease, IEW TWSS - SWI, Analytical Grammar, Drawing Sentences.

Literature - Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading, Bob Books, every Newbery Award book, all Sonlight / Bookshark / Beautiful Feet / Mensa secular books.

Spanish - Getting Started with Spanish.

Not sure if I will ever find a science I love, still waiting.

  10. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and try it next year for my youngest. He doesn't pick up writing as easily as my oldest has.

  11. I ADORE IEW !!!!!!

Earlier this year I purchased TWSS and SWI-A, we are doing Unit 4 and I have watched all of TWSS and will review as we move through the units.

This is what I have been looking for since 1986 of course, it wasn't available then. When it came out and received such rave reviews, I didn't want to take the leap, thinking it was too expensive to even try.

When I think of all the money I have spent on other writing curricula I want to cry.

I just ordered Teaching the Classics. I also purchased the NEW IEW Writing Tools app yesterday and adore it too. We will apply the skills we learn across the curriculum for many years to come.

Can't wait to get SICC-A early next year. I may feel confident enough by then, as a lousy writer myself, to go it alone for the rest of the way. :-) If not, I know I won't regret purchasing more levels.

I wouldn't trade the first 3 Levels of WWE, but I would have come straight here instead of ordering a ton of curricula that didn't work.

  12. Numbers & symbols are free. So will have both kids do this sentence and see what they come up with for you.

    Emma: traveled , 25K, mph, 30X, faster > Jet.

    Quince can't find anymore. LOL

"It traveled 25,000 miles per hour-thirty times faster than a jet."
