  1. This is PA as well. The written law looks super scary, but it's cake really. Esp now since the law changed last year. Minus a few districts, homeschooling here has never been hard or horrible.

Beginning of the year turn in a notarized affidavit and list of (very vague) objectives (Language arts: continue to read books, continue to use writing in our daily lives; Math: continue to use math in every day life... yes they can be this vague and simple, they can not disprove them and they can not use them to gauge if you have done enough) to the local district.

Keep a log which designates the reading material used. You also need to show sustained progress in the form of a portfolio that is reviewed by your own chosen evaluator. My log last year was mostly a scrap book of brochures and pictures with a few writing and math samples. I have an unschool friendly evaluator. She tells us to make the portfolio something we would want to keep. Before our port was more "worksheet" and it wasn't super fun... but before, the port went to the district and I always worried that they would throw a fit if it didn't look like school. Now our port only goes to our evaluator.

We have to test in 3rd, 5th and 8th grades, you can choose the test. The results really mean nothing.

We turn in the letter from the evaluator saying we have complied and sustained progress has been shown.

The district has no right to question any of this.

They can request an eval at any time during the year if they have reason to believe a proper education is not occuring... again you choose your evaluator and have her/him look over a port and send in the letter.

Many districts try to get away with things the law doesn't entitle them to, but usually a mom pointing out their rights in the law they back off.

Is there a list of lousy counties?
  2. Mystery solved !! It is very likely that no one ever requested his Birth Certificate, so none was ever manually typed up back then. Now computers do that for them. So they will be having a meeting to explain this procedure if they every come across it again, as sending this document out shouldn't have happened and would have outed his adoption. OOPS !! He has known his whole life, so I assured them that wasn't an issue.

We will be sending back the certificates, they will amend them to read Certificate of Birth. At the same time we will request his original file for genealogy purposes. We are both very curious to see what is in there could be tons or very little, because there are only family stories.

  3. Several days a week. I love a beautiful green yard. My recharge time is standing in the yard with house in hand. Lol My street is so quiet, and the kids find something else to do. We get charged a minimum for water here, never went over it.

  4. In my state there are 18 required vaccination for public school. Mine homeschool. We vaccinated on our schedule. One vaccine at a time with at least 3 months between each.

If I was in a pairing with an older child and had to catch up, I would still do one vaccine at a time with at least a month between each. Talk to your Pediatrician about which order.

  5. Your Welcome ! I just spent the last couple of weeks putting a ton of Latin in Quizlet. The kids like it as they play games. We also listen to the audio till they know the pronunciations, then just have a memory sheet to read from.

  6. OK, thanks for the feedback and setting expectations. I am planning to work with them and learn it alongside of them and we will likely take it very slowly at first. I was all set to order this until I saw that Henle has a pronunciation DVD but then realized it is ecclesiastical pronunciation and I would rather have classical, so I think I am back to Latin Prep as our best option.

What parts of Latin Prep do you guys use? (text, workbooks, answer book, pronunciation CD?)

I purchased all the books and answer keys with audio CD. Then went back and ordered the workbooks as my son needed more practice. Instead of flash cards we use quizlet.
  7. Latin Prep was one I was considering.  Do you think I could go from GSWL to LP with 9.5 year olds?

Latin Prep has slowed my son down a lot. He is almost 9, and finished First Language Lessons 4. It is harder than Lively Latin for sure. But could be a step from GSWL, and does have translation consistently from the start. You would have to work beside him, no doubt about that.

  8. Thanks everyone for your responses. I'll look up the Wheelock Guide, but maybe I just need a different text that is more explicit in the 'why' and 'how.' I got Wheelock from the library to try out before I bought it.

For anyone starting Latin I highly recommend Getting Started with Latin as a cheap and fantastic introduction to Latin.

  9. I will expand now that I am at the computer. I started my older kids very late, and really wanted to start earlier this time. We start Latin first, then 3 years later ( or so ) we start Spanish, another three years and we start French while continuing all previous languages. They have a choice of adding a 4th language for high school.

I really want a stronger foundation this time, so we can move more interest based as the children get older. I want to start those hard subjects asap, so that we can enjoy the easier path. So far, this has been amazing. It was so hard to jump into Wheelocks with big kids, of course it would likely be easier now that Wheelocks has so many supporting books out now. Still, I want a more gentle approach, working toward real mastery, not just memorize and forget.
