  1. Hey hose- Miss you!! Thanks for the heads up. I will probably piecemeal it!
  2. For those of you have have completed the DIVE integrated Chem & Physics... Is the $200 plus lab set worth it? Did you find you could have chosen an alterantive? Yes, I know I could purchase part and pieces... I am just having a difficult time spending that much $$$ Thanks
  3. No- neither of those. (thanks for the suggestions) I remember the publisher had a wide range of texts listed on the back of the books... Shakespeare..etc....
  4. I was at a used book sale last night and on two different tables were these Ancient Lit books and a lit booklet to go with it. I should have written the name of the publisher...thought I would remember it :confused1: The unique thing about these books is that they were 2 column. One column in the original text and the second column in contemporary English. Oh I wish I could remember..... This sound familiar to anyone? They had a web site. It was not a long address- I think one word starting with a p or an r....
  5. We have used spelling city for the past 2 years. The premium is worth it- My children never noticed (nor I) the links you speak of.... We used AAS and then use Spelling City for study fun during the week. We started when I had to go to work full time for a while. I could enter and organize lists. Intial test- the program reads a sentence to the child- the child must type the word. I can print off the list for my youngers to practice writing. I have to limit the games :0) My kids really enjoy it- worth the $$$
  6. I spoke with MCT and TMK at convention this spring. One of them let slip that high school work should ramp up...but the question is..Does it have to be such a drudge? I say,no. If enough of their customer base speak up and let them know, I beleive they will spend more time on the WWtW product. It has not been priority. We definately know they have the ability to produce a product equal to the CE series.
  7. I purchased The Teaching co Math sets alg 1, 2, Geometry thinking they were going to be the next thing since sliced bread.... After looking through the student guides/workbooks, they look like a refresher or over view course. How do you all use these...or don't you? I am currently and trying to decide on Geometry: I taught HOLTthis year at a co-op- okay, still makes me dizzy everytime I open the textbook. Solid on Geoemetry coverage. I have Teaching textbooks Geometry- I wonder how many times a student has to review logic statements in 1 year, I have never seen a Geometry text do so much logic practice. I have three kids to use an $80 textbook that is spiral bound- bummer. No Index- big bummer with me!! Jurgensen - I love....my son is not convinced Discovering- I have loaned out. Have to wait to review again. Not thrilled about discovery based. The Teaching Co- so disaapointed when I opened the package... Thanks for your input!
  8. Our local school district will not allow dual enrollment or AP classes for anyone under 11 the grade. This might be the info that Jean Burke is getting in her area as well. This is a school district specific rule for enrolled public school students- nothing to do with the college board. My guess!
  9. Does anyone have a syllabus for Jacob's 2nd edition Geometry that they might share? One of the threads suggest sets 1 and 2 over 2 days. This would drag the course out too long for us. Kolbe has a syllabus for the 3rd edition. Nice combination of problems from sets 1 and 2 with honors designation for set 3. I do not have both editions to compare. Maybe I could use the third edition syllabus? Thanks!
  10. Thanks Ladies. It is great to hear differing view. I am more closely minded with seekinghim45, but I understand the other points of view. Students that do not test well on college entrance exams are placed into either Basic Math, Algebra, Algebra 2, etc... and must go through the sequence of required math classes in order to achieve proficiency. They acquire college credit for each class. They also acquired credit for the same course/material in high school. Seems the same should apply to any course. If there is an entrance exam, we will take it. If not, we will start CC with Spanish 1. For now we will learn as much Spanish as possible at home. seekinghim45, I think it was a great idea stating College Spanish 1 and 2 on the transcript. You were up front and clear about where the credits came from. To compete with public school student in my state we only need 2 years of foreign language credits, so extra credits for Spanish 3 and 4 at the community college will be elective credits for us.
  11. This is what was on my mind for my original post. This is what the strudents did my first year in college.
  12. If we do spanish 1 and 2 at home during 9th and 10th with something that just gets the job done. Can we then go on and take Spanish 1 at the community colleg level and call this spanish 3? It is CC level and not high school. Just wondering about the opinions of those who have gone before. I have looked at several online classes for Spanish. We have a local coop teacher who offers Spanish 1 & 2, but where do I go from there? CC is my next choice. In my mind Spanish 1 at the CC level should be considered more than a high school Spanish 1 class.
  13. When we started homeschooling (kindergarten), I poked around at some private schools sites to find out what the better schools used for a grading scale. 94-100 = A was what the better schools used. This is what we went with. We are now heading into highschool where I have to keep track of grades. I have run into the following situations and wonder what the rest of you do. 1. Western michigan Universitie' ATIP program grants 2 credits for 1 year of Algebra Study ( They claim their students earn the equivalent of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 using Prentice Halls Algebra 2 text on a year.) The students only have to achieve 90% to earn an A. 2. Not sure which one, but this morning I was looking at The Potters School, Veritas, and Lukeon for Latin. one of them also grants an A for 90%. ( Can't remember which one.) 2. DIVE courses suggest an A for 90% for their AP/CLEP advanced classes. How does one represent these different grading scales on a transcript? All my transcript are packed away in storage becasue we are building a house. Maybe it is the report card that states the grading scale and not the transcript?
  14. I want to second Jann's post. I taught Lial Intermediate this year to a Co-op group while my son completed Foerster Algebra 1 at home. He covered most of the same topics, but... Lial's goes much deeper, much more quickly. The first couple of sections in each chapter is gentle and then...you are right in the thick of it. Do not underestimate the need for fundamentals review. I still love Foerster, but my son will need the review when he tackles Algebra 2!
  15. Anyone use the Duke TIP CD that uses the Jurgensen text? Happy? Enough solutions provided? I cannot tell you the students submits all their work via the software or di they solve problems in the text as well? Just wondering if it is worth the pruchase. Thanks
  16. I posted my question yesterday morning and was amazed when I looked at all your input this morning. THANKS! My Goal: I guess college testing SAT/ACT. I am not so worried about my eldest. I guess this is why I posted the question. Vocab study seems like busy work for him. My younger too- We may have to make a point of vocabluary study.
  17. Those of you who have done Latin through JH and possibly on into High School. Do you do a vocabulary program too? My ds is in 8th and we have studied Latin fro 3 years. Next year we will start Henle. He is taking Biology this year and using Science Roots along with it. I just wonder how much is enough..... Only so many hours in a day. Thanks
  18. Ladies, thank you so much for your time and responses. Julie - I would love the name of the MFW yahoo group. You could e-mail or PM me. Thanks!
  19. If you are a MFW user, can you pick and choose or does it all need to be done?
  20. We have used Sonlight from the beginning. My ds thrives on the reading. He will be in 8/9 grade this fall. He is young. My strengths and academic training is in the sciences. We started Ancients this past fall, but I had to go to work full time and we are still hanging out in Egypt. At the Cinci convention, I brought my ds to the MFW booth and showed him their Ancients program. His comments? Where are all the books? I have to answer questions for everybook? That kills a great book. I finally decided that we would stay with the SL track. If it isn't broke-why fix it route. I purchased Teaching the Classics from IEW and we were back on our eclectic route.. I am second guessing now. Oh to have the Lit and LA integrated and planned. The snippet below from MFW board appeals to me: "..think one of the aspects that stretched her the most were the writing assignments. It was not only the writing itself that was challenging, but also how it helped her to grow in her biblical world view. After reading 4 of the literature pieces, an argumentative paper is written comparing/analyzing an aspect of the literature with a biblical world view. The argumentative form is what is general asked for on college entrance exams and is one of the primary of most college papers." I would have to pull together our LA. SL has writing assignments. but they do not lead a student through the process. I do not feel that I can adequately choose 4 pices of lit and an argument to apply. How do you approach these things if you are doing aSL like approach. If I purchase Bible, Lit ( Lightning or Lit Lessons from Lord of the Rings) and History, it adds $$$ up to more than MFW each year. I do not want to kill his love for learning. I have not been a text book lover so purchasing everything seperately seems so disjointed, but this is what public school students do. They have separate history, lit/eng... Please give me another perspective...
  21. Does the program include any projects outside the practice pages? Simulation Projects maybe? 1) Finding housing given an income level ( interent research) 2) Purchasing a car using interenet research comparing like models 3) Travel Simulation given a budget 4) Credit Card Maybe none are needed. Maybe the scenarios in the activity manuals/practice pages are enough. Note: I have Purchased this. It is sitting right in front of me. Just wanted a quick answer before I went creating or hunting down projects. Thanks!
