  1. Yes, you can easily do SSL 1 & SSL 2 in a year. In fact, they advertise that you can complete a level in a semester if you give it just 20 minutes 4 times a week. After doing SSL 1 ourselves, I totally agree. I have kids in LFC, LA, and SSL, and I agree with the other comments here- SSL is a very gentle and very fun introduction to Latin vocabulary. Many of the SSL words are also in LFC, so it will be great prep work! We like the Monkey cards that accompany the series as they allow for numerous games. Headventure is also a treasure chest. Between Headventure videos, the Headventure games, and the Monkey cards you can easily master the vocabulary and have plenty to do during the week. Another idea is to write stories or make up puppet shows with the Latin puppets in the TM. My kids like to replace English words with the Latin equivalent (like the video clips on Headventure). The CAP Latin products are fabulous!
  2. Gosh, isn't it somewhat freeing to admit the failures? The trash and treasure paradigm rings true with all of the comments- yes, I read every single one. I love several items on others' hate lists. LOL! Isn't it wonderful to homeschool in a time where we have so many options? If we don't like something we can easily make a change. I am thankful! Items on my HATE list: Math U See Singapore Math Classical Conversations materials and that is it!
  3. Yes! I spoke with Dr. Perrin at convention this year. They guessed that LFC B &C would be up by the fall with Latin Alive following possibly by Christmas.

  5. We are in NW Indy! Finally, someone local!
  6. Having just attended an extensive retreat with Landry staff, they say that it does not matter which way you do the intensives. Some kids take them before the class, others take it during and after the class. They go over everything a kid needs to complete the labs. It is much cheaper to buy the intensive or class ahead of time, but it is a very worthwhile experience. For what it is worth, they have B1G1 coupons at the mom retreats. They also offer specials around Christmas. August is the cheapest time to purchase classes.
  7. Hi, I would like to enroll my 6th grader in a Landry Academy science course. We have covered some science, so I have narrowed the choices down to the following: * Young Scientist Chemistry (4-6) *Young Scientist Physics (4-6) * Young Scientist Earth, Weather, Atmosphere (G 4-6) *Introduction to Airpower, Astronomy, and Space (G 5-8) If you have taken one of these classes or know someone that has, can you comment on your experience (good and bad). Any favorites? I have until 3/15 to use my B1G1 coupon. :) (I also have two more coupon codes-message me if you want one). Thanks for your advice! Brooke
  8. I saw Susan last year at Cincinnati and was thrilled with the variety of classical speakers. Last year Susan spoke on Medieval history (maybe due to the release of her Medieval book), do you know what her convention topics will be this year? Conventions are like a shot in the arm for me :)
  9. Hi, We have been in CC for two years now and have tried combining SOTW in two different ways. Last year, I tried to skip around in volume 1 to match our history statements, but ultimately I got bogged down in the jumping and felt as though there were gaps in our study. This year in cycle 2, I started with SOTW volume 2 (following it in chapter order) and am finding that we are all much happier treating the CC statements as memory work while using the SOTW for our history core. Actually, between SOTW, the history statements and the Veritas timeline cards I have found that my kids have an amazing understanding of historical sequencing. Regarding the science, during CC we stick to the science statements. We read lots of books on the topics, create projects when applicable, and play games to ensure that we really learn about the subject matter in each statement. However, with CC only being 24 weeks long we add in the Apologia (K-5) series during our breaks and throughout the summer. The kids really don't see that as school since the projects and activities are so much fun. Most of the families at my campus follow the suggestions that I have outlined as successful for us. In our experience the combination of the SOTW study, quick CC memory work, and Veritas oral timeline have been wonderful. HTH?
