  1. Hi, How do you store your books? We have ours now in bookcases, but I can't seem to find anything. How do sort them? By theme, age or reading level? Do you 'hide' the books you're not yet using or do you have all the books available all the time? Thank you!
  2. We LOVE Deadliest Catch! It has more of a reality-TV feel to it, but boy :D...does my 3yr old know alot about crabfishing and the Great Bering Sea! :lurk5:
  3. :tongue_smilie: thank you!....Now I've ordered the wrong ones :glare:
  4. 6 days a week, on the 7th day we rest :001_smile: (we do art and music on Sunday, but I don't see that as school)
  5. If it works, stick with it! I would supplement. Maybe with MEP or "Singapore 70 must-know word problems".
  6. I love Hezekiah! and it fits perfectly with the names of your other children. I'm not a fan of Douglas though....
  7. :iagree: MEP is AMAZING! I do recommend buying the textbooks (I know most people don't do that) but I've found that those are the real strength of the program. What we did was printing out some samples of the Reception year and year 1, just to see if he liked it. He loved it straight away! The problems are like little puzzles. We are using 2 levels now: The Reception and Year 1a book. For 2 days we're working in the Year 1 book (+/- 2 lessons a day) and on the third day we do reception (+/- 6 lessons). Even though it's not really challenging for him, I DO want him to learn all the basics instead of just rushing along. We actually found some things in the Reception year he didn't know...very simple things that just haven't come up in our daily life (e.g. horizontal and vertical lines) When he's done doing Reception, we'll move on to combining 1a and 1b. This way he has 2 days that are quite challenging and 1 day that is review. We did buy the other levels already: just in case he's making some leaps again. Phonics- My son doesn't like it either but is reading as well. I let him do it for 5 minutes a day, we set a timer (most of the time we get a lesson done in that time anyway:lol: mommy wins!) It does help him, although he really can't see the use of it. As for science/history/geography: we're not planning to do anything. Just buying loads of books and kits. I guess he can teach himself :tongue_smilie:Otherwise I'd keep buying curricula
  8. Hi, We're also non-resistant. I don't like R&S or CLE for Social Studies but there aren't any other options (I think) if you don't want to cover the topics of war at all. We're planning on using living books for history. This is going to be hard: to find books that are at least do-able. But if it does mention things in there that I'm not quite happy with I will use them as discussion topic! I wouldn't let a child read such a book by itself, at least not until high school. I think that the best thing to do is to cover both sides. You can't change history, but indeed: you don't want too much detail ;) So I guess, I'm not much of a help, sorry!
  9. hmm, not sure what to think now :glare: I read somewhere that it was R&S in workbook format, but then again, I don't have a clue what R&S covers in the first 2 years :D So I guess it would be good for now, but not after Grade 1 or 2. I'll have a look at MCT, heard a lot of good things about it! Thank you!
  10. Well, if you'd like to, please do explain about CTGE. :lurk5: I'm still considering it. Maybe not for now, but maybe later on.
  11. Yes is it for my 3 year old, who has been ready for some weeks now, but I haven't been able to decide which one to use :glare: Pathway seems more gentle, but I looove the idea of learning to read with bible stories. Indeed, I tried to find people with Google, but not many people are using it and it's hard to see what the program is like, just looking at some samples.
  12. Hi all, I had a look at CTGE/Pathway and really really like what I see! I like that it's in a workbook format as DS is only 3. But our first plan was to use R&S as I've only heard good things about it. Is CTGE just as good as R&S? Thank you! Femke
  13. I was in this situation 2 weeks ago. We had a chimney fire...to be honest: I couldn't come up with anything to go back into the house for. I even forgot all about baby photos! In the end nothing got burned, except for part of the chimney. Ehm...I'd like to take my children's books collection. That's worth soooo much more than any curriculum. Can you picture me hauling all those books out of the house? no way!
  14. I'm so glad to find other people with the same problem! :D Actually, I've been thinking of Sonlight K! He loves reading and writing, and that's what it is, isn't it? Totschool, I don't even have to try! It's not in a workbook...he won't touch it. He does like painting and cutting, and that's all I get him to do. He doesn't want to do any other crafty things. He doesn't want to do theme-based things like: playing with leaves, leave stamping, autumn coloring pages etc etc. Puzzles, Yes! That has been a hit, but there seems to big a huge gap between +/-30 piece jigsaw and 100+ pieces :glare: And once he's done a puzzle 2-3 times, he won't touch it anymore, or just starts throwing with the pieces. We're indeed doing phonics now, still going strong, but I need to start thinking of the next step. He loves writing, and he does it very neatly. So something with a lot of writing would be great. I'll have a look at MightyMind! Thank you for all the help, really appreciate that
  15. Hi all, Thank you so much for replying. I know what your saying about not needing a curriculum, but not doing 'our schoolwork' would drive him crazy. He would get absolutely bored. He loves to sit and work for hours. He doesn't like hands-on learning at all (and yup...that's what I did, bought him lots of rods and blocks :001_huh:)he just loves to see it on paper. So I could do with some advice. He's now reading quite well, and I guess we'll have to start some kind of language program with him soon, as I don't really know where to start beyond phonics. I just don't want to make mistakes, buying the wrong curriculum, things that are to simple. So which curricula are the most advanced? (I'm christian, so would like to use something that is at least christian-friendly :tongue_smilie:) I guess living math won't be an option here either, he just wants paper to write on. I would love it though! Maybe my little one will be a hands-on learner :D
  16. Hi everyone, I have a question concerning my eldest. I have just found the RUF list in a different thread, very interesting. I've been in denial about my son maybe being gifted, as I didn't see it that clearly as IMO he was developing normally on the language area...until I realized that he is bilingual..how can I forget  Giftedness runs in the family (up to 150+) so changes are that he is. My question: My son is bilingual and started to speak both languages fairly soon, but when I read lists like the Ruf one, I find it hard to 'place' my son. I'm not sure how 'normal' bilingual children develop compared to 'gifted' bilingual children, of course in the language area. Anyone experience? Should I just look at the other 'criteria'? I know it's not important to know exactly on which level it is, but it would help me to understand him better. If of any help: he started to really speak his first language at 14 months, the second around 2 years. His first 7 months he has been raised and talked to in Dutch and after that in English, and he only heard us talk in Dutch to each other (not to him). He's now 38 months and reading. Another question: Preschool is absolutely boring for him, but I'm not sure if putting him in Grade 1 material would be to early. What do you do with your 3 year old? I know a lot of people that talk about 'better late than early' and this makes me a bit scared, I don't want to push him in any way. I can use some curriculum advice, as I was going for R&S all subjects, but that would probably not be such a good idea :glare: Thanks!
  17. Indeed, this is the place to go for information and answers...and to relax and laugh :D I've seen many other boards, but not one like this one.
  18. I would say MM or CLE . I think CLE is just cute
  19. Hi, I'm in the U.K.as well! We're in the Midlands. I don't know much about our local group, as I'm not going. The only people I know are: Unschoolers and Sonlighters, that's why I'm on this board, to get my information...so I'm not much of a help.:D
