  1. Never. I don't even think the workbook is necessary until at least 2nd to 3rd grade. I bought A for my son who is in 1st and what a waste. It's completely redundant with the other subjects he does. Plus he can't read yet. My DD does level C for third grade and loves it.

  2. Forget the jargon and technical terms-they aren't going to teach you anything at this point. I highly suggest you join Clickn Moms. You will not find better information anywhere-from learning manual (the point to having a DSLR), what camera would be best for you to start with (The photos the camera produces are only as good as your skills. So going super expensive isn't going to mean you get better photos), to what lenses to buy (don't buy a "kit") ), how to edit and much, much more. I suggest joining for at least 6 months-it's $30. Or if you want to try it out for 1 month it's only $8. Yes, there is plenty of free info on the web-but it's not like what you will find at CM. Trust me-you won't be sorry.

  3. I feel like a broken record since I post this every time someone has HOD placement questions:lol: Your best bet if you decide to go ahead with HOD is to call them directly for placement questions. And def. join the forum if you have more questions. The writers sister uses HOD and is very knowledgeable. I place my children using the chart which is only a guideline-I'm a complete newbie to H'schooling and had no idea. I also had a really hard time with the program because I found it very scripted. It was hard for me to use it w/o sounding like a robot:tongue_smilie:I also tried doing 2 programs at once which was difficult for me as it's hard for me to teach two children at once or split up the day. My children are lower elementary and are not able to work independently on most subjects.

The things I like best about HOD were: DITHOR, History and the optional read-alouds. They really do pick wonderful books!
