  1. I have been to a few, most are more uhm religious, and I am a Pastor's wife, and you know, I get mad, growl at books, my kids and the cat knows to run, when I kick the trash can...I can come here and the people are real, those of all religious or non-religious walks.

Can I just say, I learn here, and don't feel I have to suck my tummy in? Does that ring true for anyone else?

    :lol::iagree:

  2. Are their suggestions in the Ag for that? Or would I be better off looking at the reader list from SL?

Yes, for each chapter. I usually do the age appropriate books as read-alouds with my 1st and 3rd grader. They do have more advanced suggestions though. This program is so well thought out and very easy to implement. I really think you'll like it.

  3. I was really drawn to TOG this year, but decided to pass. I just wasn't interested in having everything tied back to history.

WP-I'd search the board. I've read that many ppl did not think it flowed well, the CS doesn't have a good reputation and apparently several of the books contain mistakes. I really loved the look of the program, but decided against it due to reading posts here.

SL-Almost did it this year. (Previously gave Core 1 a try a couple of years ago). We love to read, but it was just too much and didn't incorporate any hands-on ideas. They currently have a list for early elementary, but I feel they are pretty lame. Most families find that SL should be ordered a year behind. For example, I ordered Core 1 for a first grader-BIG mistake. Way over an average 1st graders head. When I looked at it this year, my friend who is a consultant recommended that I order 4/5 and then pick appropriate LA, Reading, Math etc. for my 3rd grader. She also told me that my 3rd grader would get plenty of History with the 4/5 package.

I looked a boxed curriculum because I thought it would be easier. I have since found just the opposite to be true:001_smile:

I don't feel like this helps much, but may give you some things to ponder:001_smile:

  4. My suggestion would be to call and talk to them about your children and what you are thinking. I didn't do this when I ordered at the beginning of the year and placed based on the chart and other suggestions. I think it would have gone better if I had of called and talked with them first.

  5. I haven't seen it, but how nauseating!!:ack2: How could it be the best for everyone? So many ppl these days feel that babies are an inconvenience and that all of their dreams will be lost. Really? Just goes to show what a selfish "me" society we live in! 93% of all abortions occur for social reasons (i.e. the child is unwanted or inconvenient).

How many teens (or for that matter adult women), know what happens during an abortion? Do they know this?

"The fetus, in many cases, dies just as a human adult or child would: It bleeds to death as it is torn from limb from limb. The fetus can be alive at the beginning of the dismemberment process and can survive for a time while its limbs are being torn off. Dr. Carhart agreed that “[w]hen you pull out a piece of the fetus, let’s say, an arm or a leg and remove that, at the time just prior to removal of the portion of the fetus…the fetus [is] alive.†Dr. Carhart has observed fetal heartbeat via ultrasound with “extensive parts of the fetus removed,†and testified that mere dismemberment of a limb does not always cause death because he knows of a physician who removed the arm of a fetus only to have the fetus go on to be born “as a living child with one arm.â€

Two of the most powerful articles I have ever read on abortion are by JENNIFER FULWILER (you will find the snippet above in Abortion and Holocaust Comparisons).

    How would you know?

  6. I don't consider time without kids a "break". I don't consider it a luxury. I don't consider it optional. I see time phyiscally away from kids to be critical. I am a *woman* and I believe that some of my time, pursuits and energies should go to activities without kids. I believe it did NOT serve my kids to "never get a break".

If I had it to do over again, I would still use the AP tools with my babies/infants, but I would, without guilt or hesitation, have non kid related activities and focus all along: a class, part time work, regular solo trips to the library, nights out with a friend...something.

I completely agree with your statements! Now I just need to get there:glare:

  7. Let me know what you think of BSF. I joined last year and quit shortly thereafter. The time actually spent in a group going over the weeks study questions was hurried and minimal. I was pretty disappointed. I thought it was actually going to be a study-where things were discussed. Not just going in a circle where random ppl said there answers out loud and then being done.

  8. A major revision OF GRAMMAR ISLAND AND GRAMMAR TOWN, and a special price for those who already bought them.

Through his continued teaching of children, Michael Clay Thompson has seen repeated patterns of confusion about specific points of grammar. When that is the case, he knows that the text is not addressing these points adequately. Michael wanted to strengthen Grammar Island and Grammar Town in the Elementary Grammar series to end some persistent areas of confusion.

Since he first produced Grammar Island and Grammar Town, Michael has experienced first-hand some of the difficulties teachers face introducing his approach, and he has gained a large audience of home educators. To aid both the classroom teachers and the home educators, he has added extensively to the teacher manuals for both of these levels. These are now incorporated in Second Editions.

Moreover, Michael’s interaction with the children has reinforced his understanding of how much the children appreciate the art in the book, and he wanted to give them the chance to see the art of Grammar Town in its full color. Grammar Town, like Grammar Island, is now in full color.

We published these all full-color, Second Editions, just after Thanksgiving.

YOU NOW NEED BOTH STUDENT AND TEACHER BOOKS FOR THESE LEVELS. With the extended notes for the teachers, there are now so many for the instructor on each page that we recommend that the students have their own student manuals for Grammar Island and Grammar Town. They are now included in the Basic Homeschooling Packages http://rfwp.com/series91.htm

We love Michael's continuous effort to make the curriculum truly excellent. We like that it is not set it stone, that it evolves as he learns more from the children. We are thankful to you for your comments about the texts and your experience of them; that is an essential part in our sometimes nudging him to make revisions. In truth, we never have to nudge very hard; Michael is constantly examining and rethinking the curriculum, and he does not rest when he sees a problem.

I grew up near Detroit in the era of larger fins on the cars every year, and I rapidly became disgusted with the notion that you obsolete the look of a product so people will purchase a new one. Because books last so long, some textbook publishers have adopted a similar strategy of new editions to sell more of their sometimes over-priced products. I do not like the practice any more in books than I do in automobiles and other products, and Royal Fireworks has never participated in this practice.

The one thing I always want to know is whether a new edition is warranted. And I want to know this as much because of my emotional reaction to it as because of the fact that we will have to throw away all the copies of the previous edition that we have. With Michael, I know that the revision is a major improvement.

THE PROBLEM FOR US AND FOR SOME OF YOU: These revisions present a problem for us as Michael’s publisher, and for some of you. You and we both want the students to have the best possible text, and that—we are certain—is the new edition. We stopped selling the old versions as soon as we knew the new ones were imminent. But many of you had already bought the old editions, planning that they would be used to educate more than one of your children. So now you have a package with a component that is not as good as it could be. This is not what you want for your younger children.

OUR OFFER TO PREVIOUS PURCHASERS: In these circumstances we are offering those of you who have recently bought the earlier editions—of either Grammar Island or Grammar Town—a very special price for the new and improved editions. This is less than half-price for the books, includes shipping in the United States, and is $35.00, (as opposed to $71.50) for the new teacher and student books.

This price is limited to people who bought these titles in 2009 or 2010 and who did not get the Second Editions. It is valid for two weeks until the 24th of January 2011. SPECIAL PRICE for previous purchasers of the SECOND EDITIONS OF GRAMMAR ISLAND and GRAMMAR TOWN: A SAVING OF $41.50 on the online price.
