  1. "The Orthodox Church of the East is the Church that Christ founded in 33 AD. She is the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church confessed in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. All other churches are separated from by schism, heresy, or both, including the Roman Catholic Church".

Why is Catholic capitalized in the first sentence above? And why is it said in the Nicene Creed? So if the schism sepearted all other churches, why is the Catholic chruch included in the creed.

  2. Last year I posted a thread about religion that became HUGE. I talked back and forth with milovaný about Orthodoxy during that time.

Just last week I realized the reason I was not inclined to go to church was due to the fact that so many churches have taken on the rock concert, general message, seeker, modern mentality. And then on FB someone local I know had posted about how the last year in her church changed her family's life. Of course I asked where she attended and it turns out to be a local Orthodox church! She was kind enough to chat on the phone with me last night and hence my new journey into exploring Orthodoxy-again:party:

I look forward to chatting with all of you-

  3. Thank you ladies:001_smile:

I wanted to use TT because I am not good at math, nor teaching it. I've tried w/DD before and she is totally confused when I am done. Having the explanations done by TT seemed like a good way to go. Last year in 3rd we used Horizons and she couldn't grasp that in a double/triple digit subtraction problem like 246-309 the 9 couldn't be subtracted from the 6 and so on.

My DD's friend is has actually learned how to add and multiply fractions. Her class is beyond the pizza slice phase.

    As far as supplementing=any recommendations?

  4. There's a lot more to schooling than just completing the information. Does she narrate or write narrations? Are there connections to be made via discussions? Are you using a textbook or workbook approach or living books? I'm not sure to what extent you're talking independence and to what extent the work is being discussed, understood or corrected. If you're talking about her doing the lesson without you having to "teach" it prior, sure.

Some parts of school is to be able to discuss what is being done, asking about final results, what if's, differences, all that "stuff". So....it depends.

I agree with you about it being more than just completing the information. We do not do written narrations or oral-we have tried. My DD just can't seem to remember anything that is read to her.

Right now she does her Math and Writing/Grammar by herself. Next week she will start SWO which she likes (because it is independent) rather than Spelling Power.

Other than that we do STOW together, but she doesn't like to sit while I read.

  5. Yep-me. We started out with MFW ECC and have dropped all of it. My kids are both doing BJU English/Grammar. I also tried WWE for my 4th grader (again:001_huh:). We have stuck with TT for my 4th grader, but switched from Singapore(again) to Mammoth Math. We went from MFW Geo. to Expedition Earth created by Confessions of a Homeschooler. It's a lovely program, but my 4th grader tunes out during the reading. Now I have ordered Little Passports for Geo and am praying it works. We also started SOTW 2 which my 2nd grader loves, but my 4th grader hates. Science may just get a complete pass this year. The MFW ECC science was not a good fit for us. I just have no clue where to go with the subject. BTW-we aren't even 8 weeks in:willy_nilly:

My 4th grader would like to do everything independently so that she doesn't have to listen to the reading aloud.

  6. :grouphug: Good for you! ITA about the way public schools approach educating children. (Even though I see a value in public education and believe that there are many wonderful teachers and classrooms and schools.)

What part of Oregon? Welcome home! ;-)

My children have had some amazing teachers-I cried at the end of the 2010 school year because I love my sons K teacher so much. I don't know about every part of Texas, but the teachers in our district are required to teach to the TAKS test. I'm sure that cuts out the joy of teaching.

We are moving back to Canby:) We will be driving the 2000 mile journey starting 7/29.

  7. I apologize-I didn't realize how many of you responded to this post!:001_huh: Thank you everyone for your encouragement and honesty :grouphug:

After 2 weeks in PS we pulled them out. While I can respect the schools "standards", I do not agree with the fact that they view children as vessels to be filled with information. Our decision to pull them was not solely based on the schools opinion of where they were at academically.

I have been schooling through the summer. We switched to Pathway Readers for DS (1st) and he is READING!! He is doing so well. DD (3rd) is using Horizons 3 Book 2. She is still struggling with triple subtraction problems-not quite getting that you can't take 6 from 4 (at this point). I'm wondering if Teaching Textbooks might be a better choice for next year-anyone? DH is better at helping her understand concepts. I just confuse her more :tongue_smilie:

We are moving back home to Oregon at the end of this month and I will be H'schooling this Fall.

Thanks again ladies for your support:grouphug:

  8. We used FIAR for part of this year. We did Volume II and it was too easy for my kids ages 6 and 9. They did not enjoy reading the book over and over. We also did the Cookbook and Bible Supplement. It is a fabulous curriculum, but just didn't work for our family.

With SL just make sure you get the right Core/Level. The Cores are not grade level-so if you have a first grader that doesn't necessarily mean the child should do Core 1.
