  1. Software, internet sites, apps... give me all your suggestions. He is a slow learner, both in math and reading/phonics. Thank you in advance.
  2. I am thinking about purchasing the whole set for my 13yo, 8th gr., daughter, (and up in coming kids.) I would like to know how many of the books we would/could go through in a school year's time if we did it 5days a week? Also, are there questions at the end of the chapters, tests, etc? Is there a study guide or lesson plan to follow? Could it be something she can read on her own or is something I have to do with her? I already have the History of US miniseries on DVD, do these correlate w/the books? Thanks in advance :)
  3. My daughter has been using GWG for a few years now. She's basically got the routine down, but I wonder about retention. I am thinking of switching it up for her just so that she could try something different and make her think a little. I know that R&S is very different, (as in English and not just grammar,) and much more advanced, but I don't want to plague her with unnecessary work either. She is an average learner and wants to go to the local Christian school for high school, like her older sister has done. The 9th grade English class there is TOUGH; and I worry about how she will do in it. (My other daughter, going in 10th grade this next school year, is advanced and everything comes easy to her.) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
  4. Thinking about this for my up-in-coming highschooler. She is not necessarily behind, but an average learner who doesn't care for history much. She is artsy and history is definitely not up her alley. Would love to hear your thoughts on this curriculum. Thanks.
  5. Thinking about this for my 8th grader. She is not necessarily behind, but an average learner who doesn't care for history much. Would love to hear your thoughts on this curriculum. Thanks.
  6. If so, do it work well and was it worth the money spent? Thanks in advance.
  7. I need to do something different. I am looking at an online/computer type curriculum for my K, 2nd, and 8th graders next year. I would love to hear how much you love/hate the program and the convenience or inconvenience of it. TIA
  8. I received a brochure in the mail for this online school. It is not Christian-based from what I can tell, but offers a free classical online education, along with a foreign language for any grade, and comes with a laptop for each child. I know that K12 offers this too, but the friends of mine who used it, hated it. I am just wondering if anyone knows about this or has used it before? Here is the website: http://www.mercuryed.com
  9. Let me start this off by saying that my first three children (22, 14, & 12) were fast learners. They were/are homeschooled and never had a problem. My 7yo son is having the hardest time! We repeated kindergarten last year, and now he's in 1st grade. We are on ETC 1-1/2 and each page is a struggle. Three letter, short vowel words are hard for him. He knows all his letter sounds and can say blends quickly, (ba, de, ti, etc). But when it comes to three letters, he can barely read them! Math is another problem. We did Right Start and he progressed slowly. This year we switched to CLE Light Units for 1st grade. And he is now struggling with that. I guess I need to switch back to RS. I don't know what to do! He is so smart and quick, just like a normal kid. He is not slow in the least bit. No delays at all. But when it comes to school, he can't do it. I am so tempted to put him in public school so that they can get him reading and doing math. I feel like a failure right now.
  10. I want to use Abeka 5yo K for phonics & reading, but there are 20-something books/items in that category on the Abeka website. Can anyone tell me what is necessary to buy in order to teach phonics to my 5yo. Thanks in advance.
  11. We've been using Growing With Grammar for a few years now, and I'm starting to think that it isn't enough English. We also do Souring With Spelling and CLE's reading. (I haven't decided on which writing program we will use.) I'm wondering if I should stick with this, or do I need to add more. Or maybe I should scrap this and go with a program that encompasses it all. I will keep the CLE reading, if I do that though. Any suggestions?
  12. Never mind Cmama, I saw that you posted the links :) Thanks!
  13. I LOVE what you've done. How in the world do you find the time to be so organized? Would you please email me your spreadsheets? I would love them! Thanks. Carla sweetpea31897@msn.com
  14. Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement. About ETC, I already planned for him to start the 1-1/2. Can you tell me about how long a phonics lesson lasts? Also, there is so much on their website to order for Grade 1 Phonics/LA, is there anything I don't need?
  15. My son will be 7yo next month and he's had a slow start. At the beginning of the school year, we started with Reading Made Easy, but he got confused with the long vowels being intertwined with the short vowels and became very frustrated; so we switched to SSRW, and he's been progressing slowly through that. He just finished book one in ETC and is now reading short vowel words. He hates the songs on SSRW, (my daughters loved them.) and thus hates the program. So I am considering Abeka. I am feeling the pressure because he is supposed to be starting the second grade and he's barely reading at K level. My question is... If I were to start him on Abeka Phonics, can I start him on the 1st grade level? Or does the 1st grade level start at a more advanced level? Thank you in advance, Carla
  16. My 6-1/2 yo son is really struggling with RME. He is having such a hard time differentiating between the short and long vowels. Even though the short vowels are clearly grey colored and the long vowels are black/bold. He has been struggling with this for a few weeks now, to the point of tears and hating to do reading now, that I am thinking of puting it aside and going with something different. This program had such great reviews. I was so excited that this really was "reading made easy." But now I'm afraid that I have wasted so much time and he's actually gone backwards that I may have to start from square one again with him. Has anyone else had these issues with RME? If so, what did you end up doing? Thanks
  17. We are currently using a 7th grade history program for both. It is CLE's Light Units, God's World His Story, and it is so dry and boring. Also the print on the light units is so big that it is visually annoying. These statements are coming from my 6th & 8th graders, but I have to agree with them on all counts this time. I would like to switch them to a different program. They are just doing their work to do it. There is no interest and therefore no retention. It has to be self-led/taught since my schedule is so full. I would appreciate any and all suggestions.
  18. I also just got our subscription, and am a bit overwhelmed myself. I did just find the "Teacher Center" and it has helped to organize/suggest videos a bit. I do have one question, if anyone who has this can answer. I am a little disappointed that we can't watch the video's in full screen w/o them getting all grainy. I even went out and bought a $50 cord so that we can watch the videos on our television, but the screen can't get any bigger w/o distorting the video. (I am watching it at 700kbps, which I believe is the highest number as far as quality.) So is there anyway to watch these videos w/o them being only (approx.) 6" x 8" ? Thanks...
  19. Do you mean Kingdom Tales? If you do, then I will tell you that we all loved the book. It was the best part of my girls' school day.
