  1. I would love to see 2 options. It would be nice to choose between a program that added on to what we currently use (BSFU doesn't discuss evolution) and a program with evolution fully integrated into all sciences. I agree that I would rather not see a discussion of ID, etc. I would prefer it just discuss the current mainstream viewpoints since there are already many other resources for homeschoolers. We would add our own discussion of our religious beliefs.

  2. With Rosetta Stone the speech recognition didn't work well for dd even though we adjusted it for children and then with the finer controls. I was able to tell if her pronunciation was ok so she would just say the phrases to me. We are also skipping the reading and writing parts in levels 2 and 3.

What books do you have from amazon? :)

I went to a close university bookstore today and they used this for 1st year and this for the 2nd year. I ordered levels 1 and 2 of the second option since it's cheap :) DD surprised me by coming and asking to do RS this afternoon so I'm crossing my fingers. I want her to be speaking and understanding enough spoken Portuguese first. Then I'll help her start reading and doing copywork for some writing. After that the books I bought or another beginning curriculum.

  3. Dd did well with Rosetta Stone for most of this year, but the last time I suggested we do some she started crying :( I think it's a great program if you can afford it, we got access through a K12 charter for free. Unfortunately that means I can't use it to help myself :)

When I did a google search an old wtm thread came up about Projeta Prosa and it looks good. But I can't find anywhere to buy it in the states and the shipping alone is horrendous! I had hoped that we could get some basic fluency with Rosetta Stone and that it would jog my memory enough to hold basic conversations with the girls. (I was an exchange student in Brazil 15 years ago and spoke fluently at that time. Later I got a BA in Portuguese at a US university). We would continue to read books and listen to podcasts and music for a few years. Then in 3rd or 4th grade we could look at a curriculum like Projeta Prosa starting with the 1st grade book. I have my old college texts that we could use for later, but not until at least middle school with modifications.

I'm considering buying this for later as well, I'm just having a hard time finding something for beginning Portuguese.

Someone lead me to the perfect thing :) I love this board for pointing out R&S Spanish. I should email my old professors.

  4. MM1, finish

    R&S Spanish 2

PR1, finish and maybe start level 2 if dd is up for it.

    SOTW 1

    BSFU

    Artistic Pursuits, 1st K-3 book

    Homeschool art class

Portuguese: ? Anyone have suggestions? I have a BA in Portuguese and used to be fluent from being an exchange student in Brazil, but I'm really rusty. DD isn't liking Rosetta Stone anymore and I want to do more than podcasts, audiobooks and the few kids books I can find. My college books can be adapted once they have some basic speaking and writing skills. It's probably time to look at paying a native speaker to tutor conversation. And/or suck it up and pay shipping from Brazil. :glare:

  5. I want to self educate more as well, but my weakness is science. I never took beginning physics, much less calculus based physics. Right now I'm going to read through the PHSE series and refresh my math skills up through calculus. At least I'll be way ahead of where the girls are for a while. For higher level science I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to the level I want to on my own or not. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not really in a position to take a class, but I can read texts and watch the Khan academy videos :) I'm at a place in life where I have time and I'm interested in learning more so I want to take advantage of it. And DH is a university student and the library and ILL are awesome!

After science and math I want to review history, writing and grammar. I have TWEM and can't wait to get started. But it's my strongest area since I love literature and languages so I'm saving the bulk of it for last.

And that is probably way, way more information than you would ever find useful. : )

I hope something in all this enormous mass of information helps somebody else avoid the mistakes I made and figure out the balance between spending time trying to make them barely adequate at something and spending time making them good at something they can do, the balance between pushing and relaxing, backing up and going forward, skills and content, basics and their own interests, depth and bredth, working with them and having them work on their own, and all those other balances that one has to get right.

I just want to say thank you for posting about your experiences. Being able to learn from moms with older children is invaluable to me as we are starting our journey!

  7. We had already done some HWOT and still do R&S Spanish which has handwriting. I hate how Mrs. Beers teaches the 6 too! We just modify as needed if I don't like how she writes a particular letter. My dd still writes them correctly, but just a different style.

  8. We're using a virtual academy this year and our state is fairly relaxed about it. The VA offers Rosetta Stone and I didn't want to pay for that myself :) Testing doesn't start until 3rd grade so we are avoiding that. We don't have to log our time, just how many days we do some type of schoolwork whether it is the K12 curriculum or our own. Once a week I email our 'teacher', who is very relaxed, one or two sentences saying how things are going. They also plan field trips and pay for the student. It's been a good experience, but we'll have gotten what we wanted to out of Rosetta Stone this year and won't continue next year. I have other curriculum I want to use. In our state the VAs seem much more relaxed than what I hear about other states.

  9. I'm going to be using BFSU's method of mixing up the disciplines, their suggested order of building topics and as a starting point but I'm going to flesh out the topics and make them more open-and-go by using RSO with it.

Big negative to this approach is I will have to buy all three Level 1 RSO books at once but it should still take me 3 to 4 years to get through all the topics.

Will you post how this goes? This is such a great idea! I've been hoping they will come out with all the levels through logic stage since I want a program that discusses evolution.
