  1. Which texts require certain courses in 7th or 8th grade? None of the high school science courses we have used have had a middle school course as a pre-req. Some texts might recommend a life science or physical science course prior to taking it, but recommended is not the same as required.

Introductory biology, chemistry, and physics can all be taken w/o any pre-reqs. (for that matter, their college level equivalents can be taken w/o the high school course. I makes for more memorization and more effort, but it is definitely still possible.)

I should have said recommended! I was looking at BJU and they suggest the physical science course before highschool programs. Thanks for responding :)

  2. My oldest is 5 and I'm starting to drool over PR :) We are already bilingual Spanish/English and are adding Portuguese as a non-native language. I'm not interested in continuing on to the Latin Road with the 2 years of high school Latin because of the 2 other romance languages.

I'm also really attracted to MCT because of the strength, beauty and fun. Are there any recs for after PR or would doing MCT afterward be a good sequence? If dd were in 5th or 6th when we finished PR would we go more quickly through the lower MCT levels?

TIA for the wonderful knowledge here!

  3. I suppose mainly because I'm not really a 'textbook person.' I don't really want to use traditional textbooks for history, science, math, etc. (Especially sight unseen.) I have found so many wonderful, creative sources for teaching (in English) and I was hoping to find equally fantastic sources in Spanish--books or curricula that would appeal to a 'living books', CM, or classical type...

Also, I had previously been looking on some Mexican websites for grammar textbooks, and they were so expensive to ship to the US, so I decided to go with R&S (though I haven't bought it yet, so I still have time to change my mind...)

Your suggestion reminds me though that I should probably look around more on the amazon libros en español section...

If you find anything in the amazon section please post :) We just started using R&S as well because of prohibitive shipping costs. I'm always looking for more options.

  4. Can you tell me which books you used from Rod and Staff? My dds are native Spanish speakers and we already have HWOT so I'm thinking we would skip the writing books. Is the teacher's manual needed or are just the workbooks enough? Here is the list form the R&S website:

    http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Espanol_Primer_grado/

    Thanks!

ETA: Nevermind, I called Rod & Staff and they said that the 2 cuadernos de ejercicio and the TM are the basics for 1st grade :)

  5. The online school we're using offers the 'regular' version of Rosetta Stone or a K-2 version that is geared toward that age group. I can't find a demo online and was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the difference? Our 'teacher' is checking for us, but all she knows so far is that the K-2 version focuses more on vocabulary. I couldn't find a demo for the K-2 like there is for the regular version on the RS site.

We're using RS to help my 5yo learn Portuguese. We are all already fluent in Spanish and I used to be fluent in Portuguese 10 years ago. So I can help dd a lot when necessary. I just need the review too :).

    TIA!
