  1. Which field guide is your favorite? All I have are the beginner ones for little kids, and we're ready to move up so we can do some serious nature study.

Can't decide whether it's better to have the drawings or the photos!??

So what do ya'll like and why

    :lurk5:

  2. For 1st grade you will NEED the TMs since there is a lot of scripting, and material in them that isn't in the LUs at this level.

Math : I would highly recommend getting the flashcards for 1st grade, they are very nicely set up and are used thru 4th grade I believe it is. If you are really tight on your budget you can make or arrange others yourself (there is a list in the back of the TM) but having the ones CLE makes is a lot easier. (someone on here was selling a set not long ago)

I have not done 5th yet, but most people seem to just use the Answer Keys at this level since the TMs do not contain the answers, and the LUs have all the instruction in them.

While the additional 1st math materials (Counting Book, Calendar Book, etc) are nice they are not really "needed" to do the course.

There is an active yahoo group for CLE also if you wanted to talk to more people using it :)

    HTH,

    :iagree:

    What she said:

    Flash card, LU's, TM's for 1rst grade

Lu's and Answer Keys for 5th

I don't know anybody who's using their creative writing book, so I can't help you there.

  3. We have had a very busy year, so we used Sunrise Science for 2nd grade. . .it's as good as it gets for workbook science if you ask me.

Science is only Sunrise in 1rst and 2nd grades.

I know Social Studies is Sunrise through atleast 4th grade.

I'm very impressed with the Sunrise editions, but I wouldn't touch the NON-sunrise editions with a 10 ft pole.

  4. :thumbdown:okay.. .so I'm deducing that a good xylophone/glokenspiel is going to be currently out of my price range for now.

Sooo. . .I'm looking at some of the ideas. I really like the idea of the handbells. I have a really loud cowbell that I use to call everyone in for mealtime, and they always want to play with it, but can't because it's too LOUD. Makes me think they'd like it. I want to get a variety of instruments so we don't have fighting. . .

  5. I would like to get some decent quality instruments for my little crowd. I have a little tikes xylophone that I HATE. The sounds are so off key:banghead:

Have ya'll found any that have good tone?

Also I would like some percussion as well. . .but I really hate to get something cheap that's going to just fall apart. I know there's good stuff out there, but reviews are so mixed that it's hard to know what to get.

    What says the hive:bigear:

  6. I did this very thing this year.

We moved and now are nowhere near a library. I have never been able to keep up with how much my kids read. . .I'm finally AHEAD!!

I download tons of books from gutenberg.org or manybooks.net or archive.org. . .and there's ALWAYS something new on the kindle. . .

The kids have to take turns with it, so I'm seriously considering getting another. I have to wait till they go to bed to use it. It's well worth the $$

  7. Tried it. I really REALLY wanted to love it, but it didn't work for us. I do still print off pages for supplements and refer to it for game ideas.

    1. ds's eyes would glaze over as soon as he saw the page. . .overwhelming for him to say the least

    2. ds was bored to tears with mastery

We have now been happily using CLE for a year and a half. :D

  8. :grouphug: Big hugs. . .I think it's that time of year.

I think you have a good idea with the timer. One suggestion would be instead of letting him do his work in whatever order he wants. . .to have him rotate between a hard subject and an easier subject. My son loves reading and narrating so for us this would look something like this:

    math

    reading

    language

    history. . .etc

  9. Thanks for everyone's responses. I'm definitely leaning toward NOT combining in year 2. . .dd is a typical kid and would greatly benefit from year1, I believe.

That being said, ds has read every scheduled book in year1 except An Island Story, Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare, and Parables from Nature. He's a great reader and a born narrator. I just can't see doing year one with him. He could read much on Year 2 on his own. . . .

so I'm leaning toward year1 for dd and year2 for ds. Now off to join the Ambleside Yahoo group.:auto:

Forgot about Trial and Triumph. . .we haven't read that book either, but we're not going to.;)

  10. and try and join the yahoo group later today. . .at nap time;)

Whether I keep them separately or apart, I honestly think it will be easier than this year. We went with separate textbooks for each child and I felt that it took soo much time to look over shoulders, then grade. And then we read a ton of books too, because they don't really retain anything from their textbooks. . .and they like books. =)

I think Ambleside will be a good change:D
