Fear not! tee hee
Seriously, I don't think that you NEED a reading program for 5th grade. If you're really concerned, you could just get the mosdos reader and let your dc read that at their own pace. Someone will have to correct me if I'm wrong, but I BELIEVE that concepts like plot etc are included in the student text.

and it was more trouble than it was worth. Inevitably we were ahead or behind, because well. . .life happens. Sometimes you just have to brush off school work and go to the park, and sometimes kiddos get inspired and want to work ahead. Just easier to take it a day at a time.:001_smile:

I don't think it's necessarily bad to go through curriculum quickly but just a word of warning with Horizons math: It starts off slowly....and then it STEAMS off. It moves really really quickly. You could take it at the suggested pace but add in some math games, or if you do decide to do extra lessons, just be prepared to slow down when her eyes glaze over. ;)

and she's almost 6. But with that being said, its gotten much better. I do not sit over her shoulder when she's writing for fun, but I do keep on her during handwriting time to "FOLLOW THE ARROWS". She's free spirited so this does annoy her. . .
As for the spelling, I believe you're doing the right thing. You don't want her having the words stuck in her brain incorrectly.

I have a ds7, a dd ALMOST 6, ds 2 1/2, and dd 9 months.
In a perfect world I would be homeschooling classically, but I'm just doing the best we can. :)
My oldest is using: CLE math, Abeka Language and spelling (the spelling at the very least will change), ARFH, SOTW1, lots of books and some experiment kits
My dd is finishing up Abeka's handbook for reading and horizons math
:001_smile: I love these smilies by the way

I'll be homeschooling the same ages as you. . .a 2nd and a 1rst grader. . .with two littles along for the ride.
For your first year, and with such young kiddos, you can keep it simple. For example, do your 3r's with a "box curriculum" publisher like CLE, Abeka, BJU, or Rod and Staff, and then just keep the rest relaxed with library books or whatever interests ur kiddos.

We are moving to upstate NY in 5 months or so. Does anyone know how to find out how strict your district is?
