  1. Thanks for the suggestion Kareni, I will look into that as well, I guess what I'm hearing is that yes, everyone augments the text with labs or it won't be a full credit. Grace, Kerry
  2. Thanks for that suggestion,I'll check into that, but I am also wondering how many labs to do along with this book, what is necessary to round it out? Kerry in CA:confused:
  3. In my older Well Trained Mind book, SWB recommends the Wiley self-teaching guide, Chemistry, Concepts and Problems, ALONE, for Chemistry. Is that it? Or is there a set of labs that would work with this, or did SWB just feel the book covered it all? Maybe the new editions of TWTW have changed the recommendations for this? I like the look of it, kind of "just the facts, Ma'am." But it would seem most Chemistry courses need at least a few labs to be justifiably a chemistry credit. Help with this anyone? Thanks so much, Kerry in CA
  4. Thanks for this encouragement. My son just started with it after trying two other programs and he is sailing along. It is good to hear evaluations from someone that really knows math. Kerry in CA www.noellethemovie.com
  5. My son used Rainbow Science, which is usually recommended for 7th/8th grade years if you do the labs. We used the text only for the last half of 8th grade into half of the 9th grade year. It is a nice understandable text survey of physics then chemistry then biology, then a section called Applications which covered some earth/physical science. We went from there into Science Shepherd Biology for 10th. Hope this helps! Kerry www.noellethemovie.com
  6. Thanks so much for this!!! I have been looking and this seems so clearly laid out. Kerry Wall www.noellethemovie.com
  7. How great to hear your story as I have a 14 year old son who started with Videotext algebra last year, couldn't get it, so halfway through the year we started back with Saxon Algebra, made it through half the book but I have literally had to walk him through every problem, now we are starting with Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1. I guess I could look at last year as Pre-Algebra! Your story is encouraging! Kerry in CA www.noellethemovie.com
  8. For what it's worth, we have used Ambleside as our main curriculum for nine years. I have four children from 14yrs down to 7. On their yahoo group they have, under files, a breakdown of the schedule, what books to read, what chapters to cover each week. I follow this pretty tightly for K-8 grades, then for high school we choose from the "salad bar" of book options. They also have a document in files that breaks down how all their choices cover high school credits. I think it is a pretty amazing resource. JMHO! Kerry Wall www.noellethemovie.com
  9. Thanks for sticking with me on this...if I got the 1.student text and 2.workbook 3. teachers edition would that be all I would need if I found labs elsewhere on whatever subject was being studied? Please keep in mind I am not gifted in science :D ! Kerry in CA See NOELLE, our family's film, available on DVD Nov. 11 through Paramount Home Entertainment www.noellethemovie.com
  10. Cynthia, I looked at Singapore's science and it looks interesting, challenging but not "dry". I'm thinking this may be a possibility for us. Have you used it successfully without a TM? I noticed they said something about not trying the labs outside of a classroom?
  11. I did contact Dr. Dobbins at Rainbow Science and asked for suggestions in the interim. He mentioned Apologia, (as I said, not our style) and Bob Jones as possibilities. My oldest won't be done with Rainbow until winter or spring of 2009, so MAYBE? Dr. Dobbins biology will be ready then! I will also check out the home training tools website, I hadn't heard of that and I do like the idea of everything being in the kit. Cynthia, I didn't know Singapore had science selections, so I will check those out too. I so appreciate all your help! As far as our movie goes, we are so excited Paramount is releasing it, thanks for the support! 12. Hi! I haven't posted here in a while, I mainly follow AO but have always used WTM as a major resource as well. I am wondering if anyone can help me with a recommendation for a Rainbow Science "style" biology course. We looked at Apologia and it seemed very intimidating and overwhelming for us. We tend to be less scientific, more artsy, and humor works well with my 13yo ds. He is finishing up Rainbow this year, he LIKES it, :001_smile: I like it! ( and can understand most of it, which is even more surprising) and we need to look at a high school level Biology course gulp...and I am stumped. As far as I can tell Rainbow does not have a Biology for HS but does have Chemistry. Any input is greatly appreciated! Kerry in Ca See NOELLE, our family's film, available Nov.11 on DVD through Paramount Home Entertainment www.noellethemovie.com
