  1. Whoa. Amazon takes down another I guess. :(

I’m not discounting that Amazon played a role, but the story says they were bought by private equity companies and then said companies “saddled†them with quite a bit of debt. Bain Capital isn’t interested in running companies, they’re looking to strip assets and leverage capital to make more money for the lawyers and the private equity firm. Bain’s business is shutting businesses down after they take all they can so it was really only a matter of time once they bought Toys r Us. I imagine the other three aren’t any different. I’m going to stick the blame on them, quite frankly.

  2. I'm just learning about all this stuff to release a book.

It's up to the author/publisher. It may be because the book is new - they may discount at a later date, so waiting might pay off, but it's not guaranteed.

It’s book 5 of a 7 book series and books 1-4 offer the discount so I wonder what the odds are of them switching this mid-stream.

    I appreciate your perspective. :)

  3. Can you borrow the Kindle book from the library?

    (Sorry, I'm no real help.)

It’s on OverDrive, but it’s going to take me too long to finish the book and the waiting list is long enough that buying it makes sense. Good idea, otherwise.

I was just surprised that they didn’t offer it when they have on other books. Audible’s given reason is basically, “Sorry. We add new ones all the time.â€

  4. In the past, I have purchased either the Audible version or the Kindle version of a book and then been able to buy the other one at a reduced price. I wanted to do that with one tonight, but there is no option to do so and so I’m wondering if that’s because the book is relatively new (it came out in December) and I just need to wait it out or if there are other factors at play.

Dh prefers the audiobook so I got it with my Audible credit for him, but I’ll never get to the book if I have to listen it and I want the ebook, but I’m not paying $14.99 for the ebook version of the audiobook I already own. *grumble, grumble*

  5. Our mixers are the same age. My dad gave it to us when we got married. I don’t remember what was available because I didn’t shop for it. It was an unexpected gift, we didn’t have a registry. I guess that means my marriage is 16 years old too. I’m not sure how that happened. I tend to think we’ve been married “about 10 yearsâ€. :P

Lol, I do the same thing!

  6. I guess it’s good they have a larger tilt head for people who don’t like the lift. I prefer the lift one.

I was at Target recently and they were selling a positively tiny tilt head one and I was like “what is this for?†It looked like a baby mixer.

I believe based upon the KA website that those are from the Artisan mini line. 3.5qt I think.

Kohl's sells the 5qt Artisan tilt head and the 3.5qt Artisan Mini from what I saw when we were there yesterday. In fact, I have not seen a KA lift at Kohls in anything smaller than the 6qt. I haven’t been to the KA store by my ILs in years, but the last time I was there, I think the smallest lift mixer I saw was 6qt. That’s pretty much the extent of my KA mixer size knowledge. :)

  7. I regulatly make yeasted doughs that have 1000g of flour plus the liquids to hydrate the dough and find my 5qt is too small. I make it work, but a larger KA mixer would be better. If I was making standard bread/cookie/cake recipes, the 5qt would probably be enough. I hate the tilt head, though.

  8. I love my dh as training partner, but sometimes it’s not so helpful. No run Friday or Sunday because of reasons. I love the guy and he totally needed the rest. Me....not so much.

Keeping on, regardless, day one of half marathon training is in the books with just over four miles. I told dh that fine, I’d agree to no run on Sunday, but runner me will be back starting today and he can skip workouts all he wants, but runner me faithfully follows all training plans cuz I got goals that won’t be met hanging around doing nothing. ;)

    wintermom - ouch!

Oh, and I’m in the “wear what you wants†camp regardless of age. Rock that bikini if that’s what you want! :D

  9. Most of the bikes (maybe all?) at Wal Mart, Target, etc will have steel frames. If you’re looking for a lighter bike, I’d look into an aluminum frame. I’d also head to a bike store. Imo, it’s worth the trip and they can get you properly fitted for a bike. Then, if you want to shop elsewhere you’ll at least have a better idea of what you want.

  10. Since the OP likes creamy dressings and roasted veggies, what about a roasted cabbage ceasar salad? The dressing is vegan, but you could akways substitute your own - https://gratefulgrazer.com/home/vegan-roasted-cabbage-caesar-salad/

Or on the same theme, but with ranch dressing. This one has a jalapeño ranch dressing, but you can use your preferred dressing. It’s on top of kale, but you don’t have to use the kale. Any sturdy green would and you can quick blanch the greens if they are too assertive or massage them a bit to help tame their assertive notes. Or skip greens altogether. http://robustrecipes.com/roasted-veggie-salad-skinny-jalapeno-ranch-dressing/

This recipe uses a creamy dressing and no greens - https://www.afamilyfeast.com/winter-vegetable-salad/ - Adjust the amount of dressing to your taste/dietary goals. You can mix the dressing with some low-fat plain yogurt to help dilute the calories a bit while keeping the amount of dressing in line with the recipe, too if that helps.

  11. I'm not anti fat. ; )

    But yup. There are options.

Fat free dressings are pretty yucky to me though. They are loaded with sugar. How is that better?

OP said light dressing, she did not say fat free. Dietary goals differ so choosing a dressing with fewer calories is often a helpful option for meeting those different goals.

  12. sure - it does not matter where the oil comes from; if it's oil from nuts or seeds or tahini, that is fine, too.

But I was under the impression the OP used a lite, ie fat free, dressing on plain veggies.

Adding in something like nuts or seeds in her case would probably be something far more palatable and accessible than choosing an oil based dressing. She can keep the dressing she likes and add interest to her salad.

Plus, lite dressing is not the same thing as fat free. Hidden Valley Ranch Light has 7 grams of fat - https://www.hiddenvalley.com/products/bottled-dressings/light-fat-free-and-organic/original-ranch-light/ - and that’s not unusual. Light dressings typically have anywhere from 3-7 grams of fat in them.

  13. Yea I thought the same...could add cheese or bacon bits.

But plain oil is kinda ick. It's much different mixed with vinegar.

And then you have the added benefit of choosing something that has more than just fat. Cheese and bacon have protein. Nuts would add some protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Oil just adds fat.

  14. Just remember that the vitamins in spinach and other leafy greens are fat soluble. The fat in the dressing serves an important purpose - without it, your body cannot absorb the vitamins.

They may be fa soluble, but that doesn’t require one use an oil based dressing, particularly if one does not enjoy it. There are other ways to consume that fat without needing a whole bunch or using oil.

OP - have some nuts with your spinach, or make a nut based dressing. Add some cheese. Seeds have fat. So does hummus if it’s a commercial brand that adds oil and tahini. If you eat/like eggs, you can add some hard-boiled eggs. It doesn’t have to be a vinaigrette and it certainly doesn’t have to be oil if that’s not something you enjoy.

  15. Dh has unfortunately ended up working late so much this week that he’s been my absentee workout partner. I get it, he has to sleep and all. Plus, it’s not like he can just ignore the drunk driver. Sometimes it stinks when all of the olans have to change. It is what it is.

Since Friday was out and I had a lot of driving kids places things to do, I took yesterday as a rest day. I figure since this is the last week in the “off season,†might as well go for it. Then today we were supposed to go for a run and do some strength training, but since he worked 16 hours and still needed to sleep (see also: drunk driver), I decided to run outside. Ran 5 miles. It was lovely.

Monday starts the training plan for the half-marathon in May and I will probably run 8 miles tomorrow.

  16. Training kids to do household chores and to be helpful does not have to equal chore charts or systems. Different systems, no matter how regimented or loose work best for different families. I think that some are seeing this in only one way.

This up here is important to remember.

At my house there is no chore chart, system, allowance, or reward. My kids do need reminders, but that’s because they’re kids. I am also not strict about it in the sense that I hold them to high, exacting standards. I do expect that they’ll do their part to help out around the house, however.

I have to remind one of my children to change their underwear everyday. I persist because it’s necessary, shall I stop to preserve our relationship? ;)

  17. I am not their maid. I am not their servant. I do not own the responsibility for taking care of keeping the house clean. Therefore, everyone in this house will help out. I do not pay the kids because to me that sends the messae that these tasks are mine and I am paying them like I might pay an outside third party of which none of my children qualify. You live here, then you work here too just like all of the rest of us. You do it for free just like all of the rest of us, just like you will have to when you live somewhere else.

To me, giving up sends the message that you don’t have to pull your own weight and someone else will do it for you. No future roommate, partner, or spouse is going to want to live with someone like that, nor should they have to. Plus, these kids go out into the world as my ambassador to the public. I don‘t want that attached to my name. About my children, no one will say “Didn’t your mother/parents ever teach you...â€

We, the adults in this house, persist in this for all of the reasons listed above. Don’t like it kid? Too bad, sucks to be you. The vacuum is over there. Best get going. You’re only wasting your own time. I can do this all day. I also have this hearing problem wherein whiners are blocked out and I just can’t hear them. What? What’s that you say? I can’t hear you. Maybe you can try it again so I can?

But, I’m not pregnant, my youngest is 8, and my dh is on the same page (and helps out around the house). As for kids helping out of their own accord? All three of my chore assigned children do that, too. The other day ds folded the towels after I brought the basket upstairs. Any one of my kids will help put clothes away or fold when they see me doing it. Do they always notice the things that need to be done? Nope, but we’re working on it.

Might I give up for now if my circumstances were different? Sure, but just for a limited time until I had more energy or greater support from my spouse. For always? No way! Did I mention that I am not the maid? ;)

  18. 8the grade is ds’s final year being homeschooled and also the first year I don’t have a good feel for by this point in the year. I’m thinking in terms of goals for the future and then working my way backwards.

He needs to develop more skills as a writer and have more experience with managing projects and his classwork without as much input from me. Part of me thinks I should add in an outsourced class to facilitate that. High on my list for these are writing and math. Limitation here being my budget. I’m going to assume cost isn’t a limitation here just for now.

Math - Algebra I with DO

Writing - BW Essay Prep three class series mixed with some shorter assignments either on Outschool or from BW resources I already own

Literature - Boomerang Book Club (maybe online, at the very least the subscription)

Media Literacy - Using the Crash Course videos plus additional assignments

History - Either state history with a goal of completing a National History Day project or HO American History

Science - RSO Biology, level 2 and continuing with outside classes at the nature center
