  1. For those who are asking why, twofold:

    1) We sometimes have visitors who have strong cultural prejudices against dogs. Crating her seems more cruel than allowing her to be outside and run around.

    2) Just as I believe being outside is good for humans, I believe it's also good for dogs. Yes, she gets 6-7 walks per day, but she is always on a leash. I'd like her to have the freedom to run around untethered and the backyard is the only place that can happen. (Her recall is not good enough for the dog park off lead yet.)

Crating is not cruel. You’re thinking about this like a human and not a dog. Think of your dog as being from another culture - dog culture, if you will.

In dog culture, being in your crate is being in a cozy, safe space all your own. It’s full of good smells and feels like home. In dog culture with a crate trained dog, it’s one of your favorite places to be.

In dog culture, going outside on your own is stressful and lonely. In dog culture, going outside is only fun if your people are with you. In dog culture, going outside alone is fine in short bursts of time. For longer bouts? You’re bored and a bored dog is a dog that will get into trouble.

You can use dog culture with kids too. I explain to my kids that in dog culture, it’s considered rude to get in another dog’s face. And it’s not dog culturally acceptable to hug like it is in primate culture. And of course the dog is sniffing there, that’s how they greet each other in dog culture.

  2. Yeah the problem is finding a size that fits. I only went with them because they basically had the unusual size.

Oh my yes! In my case, ds is tall and skinny. I have spent far too long trying to find the kid jeans in stores. Finding him jeans at LE saves time and I pretty much never pay full price so that helps with cost.

Sorry they didn’t last for you. Ds has blown through other brand’s jeans we’ve bought him within a couple of days of them being purchased so I can relate.

  3. Went to the gym yesterday to run on the treadmill and did some strength training. I think I’ll go ride the bike at the gym today for some cross training.

I went to the store to buy myself a new pair of jeans yesterday. The jeans I have fit ok, but I neglected to notice that they were ankle length when I bought the, and they have annoyed me to no end since then. It makes me feel like my pants are too short. I have discovered that higher rise jeans are meant for people like me. I also bought a size that I have never worn and that I never thought was possible to wear. It may just be because of vanity sizing, but I don’t care. I’ll take it.

  4. They not only offer a lifetime guarantee, they also have an unconditional return policy so it wouldn’t matter how long ago you bought them - https://business.landsend.com/guarantee

LE jeans are the only ones I can get ds that are small enough in the waist, long enough in the leg, and sturdy enough to last more than a day or two. It’s odd that the ones you had didn’t last, but definitely let LE know. Thay’ll make it right.

  5. Big puffy, sparkly heart adore raising bread. It can be hard to find vegan so having some requires I make my own and consequently I rarely eat it. Right up there is my memory of the cinnamon raisin biscuits from Hardees. I hated them as a kid, but for the last year or so I’ve wanted one which will, again, require I make it.

I just want to buy it at a store and have it for breakfast. Tomorrow would work.

  6. she said she has tried other mice

    tee hee mice...

Then other USB ports? She says it doesn’t work with wireless though so then OS? Is the OS up-to-date? Is there a patch out there in the OS that might address it?

Otherwise, I’d say take it in. Is there a warranty left on the device? OP mentioned that it’s not quite a year old so I’d say sooner rather than later.

  7. Just for anyone reading who runs a small business, I don't know about the writing world so it may be different, but the stats say that you should respond to negative reviews.

Obviously not with a chip on your shoulder - that is a bad idea. But it is also a bad idea to leave negative reviews unaddressed.

If they are legitimate, (ex: You shipped my labels 3 days late and never responded to my last conversation!!!!), you apologize and explain both how you will/have fixed this customer's issue and how you will avoid making the same mistake(s) in the future (ex: I'm sorry, they did go out a few days late. We've been running behind this week and should have sent you an email to notify you of the delay; I've issued a refund for your shipping cost. We've extended our processing times to leave a little more cushion for busy times in the future).

If they are illegitimate (ex: I had to pay import taxes of $15 just to pick up these labels and they were much smaller than I thought they would be and the seller wouldn't put a different value on the customs form so that I wouldn't have to pay the taxes!!!!), you explain calmly and somewhat impersonally why the issue they're complaining about is not legitimate, if possible expressing some sympathy with their disappointment (ex: Unfortunately it is a crime in the US for us to lie on the customs form about the cost of purchase. I wish you didn't have to pay import taxes either :) The size of the labels is something you selected from the first drop-down menu when making the purchase; you did select the smallest size. We can make them at almost any size you like in the future, though, up to 4" wide.)

Eh, as a customer, I’m going to disagree. Especially since small business owners tend to be the worst at responding impersonally. Maybe then it’s a good idea that if you’re going to do it, that to run your replies by someone not involved in your business first? Because more often than not, when the small business owner replies, ime, it veers off into Streisand effect land.

As a customer, if you very few reviews, then I can see where responses like the above could be helpful, but if you’ve been in business for awhile, then I’m going to be looking at trends when reading your negative reviews and not your responses. I don’t care so much about why you were shipping things late to any one person. I’m going to care if it seems to be a habit. Also, I can figure out when the negative reviewer is being unreasonable like in your second example, even without you replying. Except if you reply to every single review and are kind of a jerk...then yeah, I’m going to be giving those negative reviews a whole lot more weight.

    YMMV and all that.

  8. Everyone draws the line between honest critiques and meanness differently though. Personally, I don't see anything especially mean about Mergath's review. And the truth is, even if you get a very negative review or comment, mean or otherwise, it's just wiser to not engage. I am much less likely to buy books or eat at a restaurant where the author or owner replies to their negative reviews defensively or makes a habit of replying to all their reviews.

Definitley this. I expect there to be a mix of negative reviews and positive reviews. Every business has a bad day. Sometimes it’s legitimately an issue and sometimes the reviewer is the problem. I need a business owner that trusts that I have a brain and can discern this for myself. There’s nothing that will send me running from a business faster than an owner who feels the need to correct the record and posts responses to their negative reviews. To me that screams, “this review is legitimate!!†And also, if they behave that way in the comments on reviews, they’re likely not going to be pleasant to deal with in person.

It’s when you don’t have negative reviews that I doubt your product. It’s when your book has all positive reviews that I figure I probably don’t want to buy it - this is especially true when it’s self-published. Plus, when it comes to negative reviews on books, sometimes that helps me decide to buy it. X issue might be a huge deal for a reviewer, but no biggie for me. The negative review gives the self-published book some credibility. Hey, this book was read by more than the author’s mother and is a real book.

  9. Oh, any favorites?

I'm drooling over her page, the Maple Mustard Kale Quinoa Toasted Pecan Salad looks amazing and the Sweet Potato Nacho Fries, yum!!!

Lol, well I got the cookbook on pre-order and then all the non-adults got sick, but before that we had the Spiced Lentil Tamale Pie and the Golden Rice Bowls. The Golden Rice Bowls were fantastic. The Spiced Lentil Tamale pie was a hit with my kids.

Ask me again at the end of the month. Looking out over the meals planned for the month, it looks like just about every day starting next week comes from the cookbook.

Those Golden Rice Bowls, tho. I used golden raisins instead of goji berries. That dressing. So good.

OP - Vegan Richa has a website and a couple of cookbooks. If you have an InstantPot, Richa’s stuff plus Jill @ Simple Daily Recipes, and Fat Free Vegan are all good resources for IP vegan recipes.

  10. How do you get the PDFs into the iBooks? Is it easy to do? I’d never thought to do that but would be a nice option, especially for some things to have on my iPad!

Ummm, well you can load them into iBooks via iTunes if they live on your Mac. You can also iMessage them to yourself and the when you open it in iMessage you touch on the square with an arrow pointing out of it and choose “Copy to iBooks.†That’s pretty much the same thing you do with files from Safari or an email app like the Gmail on. Touch on the square w/an arrow and underneath AirDrop there will be a number of options including “Copy to iBooks†or “Save PDF to iBooks.â€

ETA: There may be faster/easier ways to do it, but my Mac is an older one and AirDrop with it doesn’t work. This is just how I figured out how to do it myself without looking it up. I should probably make ds do it. He’ll probably come up with a faster and easier way. :p

All of the above have websites and You Tube channels. I really like Chloe Coscarelli’s cookbooks along with Isa Chandra Mosowitz. Of the cookbooks I purchased recently, Gena Hamshaw’s “Power Plates†is one I could make every recipe in. Her website is called “The Full Helping.â€

  12. I like to do my part to enrich the homeschool community.

    Everyone, you're welcome.

    Lol.

Well, I for one have been both enriched and entertained today, so I thank you.

Also, there’s a difference between a forum posting and a published book one has made available for sale. Then again, I can be a descriptivist so I suppose that explains my situationally varying expectations in case Kelli takes issue with my lax grammar standards.

  13. I prefer the Kindle app on my iPad to iBooks for reading, but that’s because I read in bed at night, and the Kindle lets me turn the brightness waaaay down. Like down beyond what the device does on its own. Combined with the black screen theme, it’s the perfect amount of brightness. Dh never notices the light, but I feel like it’s more considerate that way. If I’m talking curriculum books of PDFs, then I use iBooks.

I also like the syncing between audiobooks on Audible and the ebooks in the Kindle app because sometimes I own both and alternately read/listen to the book. I don’t do it often, but I like that option.

  14. Yes, except I don’t want that list. I want the other list, the one called “The Books That Did Not Make the List.â€

The one you have to agree to never talk about. Like fight club. Don’t talk about the book list. Further down that page are the terms for getting the list.

See, forbidden fruit. I guarantee she and I will not agree, but I can’t have it and now I clearly neeeeed to see it. Also, I want to see the controversy that the terms are in reaction to because I feel like I missed out. I figure it had to have been pretty big to have prompted the terms.

  15. Remember when the Sonlight dude came here to defend Sonlight?

Maybe there's something to your theory about homeschoolers being control freaks.

There’s also a curriculum publisher whose name escapes me at the moment, but from what I remember the extent of the curriculum is a book list idea. It riffs on the “quality†book bit which, meh, fine to each his own. Anyway, said author also publishes a list of books that they deem bad which includes all of the reasoning why these books are bad for kids to read. The author of the list got some push back/criticism and now you can’t see the list unless you agree never to comment on the list, publish the list, or disclose the list to others on social media.

    Kind of like fight club.

Except it’s forbidden fruit so all I can think is how I neeeeed to see the list.

  16. Accidental Coach - Sorry to hear about the injury! Injuries stink!

Ran 7 miles outside yesterday with dh. It flew by so fast which I took to be a sign that I had developed my boredom handling muscle in my brain, but dh pointed out it was probably because everything felt so new since it’s the first time we’ve run the trail in months. He’s probably right, but I like my idea better.

We’re going to go run and do strength training together today.

soror - glad to hear your energy is up some. Dizziness isn’t any fun, though. Hope you get it straightened out.

  17. I got myself a new swimsuit last year - well...half of one. They don’t make bottoms that make me feel comfortable enough to wear them. I don’t mind so much the tankini tops, but none of the skirts and shorts are long enough for me to feel comfortable in. I did end up finding a pair from Lands End that are long enough, but I’m not paying Lands End prices for a body that continues to change size from season to season. In the end, I discovered my running shorts were solid color enough to work so I wear a tankini top with running shorts on the bottom. Problem solved.

Rode the bike today for 35 minutes for a hill/speed type workout. Still meh on its use for runners, but I can’t run six days a week without getting injured so I’m going with it anyway. Dd is fianlly healthy so no more bland diet! Yay! I’m working on this week’s dinner plans which will involve eating ALL the vegetables and ALL the fiber! I am so excited!
