  1. We are enrolled in an umbrella school here in Florida, Calvary Baptist Church Academy. They have agreements with local colleges and most of the highschoolers are dual enrolled!
  2. We appreciate it and will be checking into some of these options. Blessings.
  3. My son who is a hs jr this year thinks he wants to major in zoology or wildlife biology. His dream job would be to work with animals, even insects, in a research setting. Anyone out there doing that? What path did you take to get there? Thanks!:001_smile:
  4. My son plays is our church orchestra which our umbrella school allows him to count as community service. Any idea if this would be approved?
  5. My son has been using TT this school year for Algebra. Lessons were taking longer and longer and he was missing more and more problems. Math has never been his best subject....he's got an A average in everything else, but has always struggled somewhat with math. I finally took him to a tutor which conveniently is a young woman that lives 2 doors down from us. He's doing much better and he feels much more confident about his math abilities now. He is going to continue with tutoring over the summer and probably on through next year. I've given him a half credit for Algebra this year (9th grade) and he is going to earn the other half over the summer. Good luck.
  6. I wanted something that got the job done without requiring a lot of my time. This program has been perfect for my son and he has learned a lot. Each unit looks at a specific country or region, explores the history, culture, politics and economy, physical characteristics, etc. There are also projects included that require further research, critical thinking, essay writing, and so forth. With all of our other academics and outside activities along with taking care of an ailing grandmother, this program fit-the-bill!! Good luck:001_smile:
  7. I had not heard about this, so I went to the website and checked it out. It says that it contains instruction as well as demonstrations of the experiments. My son loves the Red Wagon Tutorial for biology that he is doing now. We're planning to use the one for chemistry next year. I let him listen to the sample of this new DVD, and he didn't think it would appeal to him as much as RW. Good luck!
  8. The SOS World Geography is for 9th grade....it is geography only!
  9. Well, he enjoys doing it, and the program does the scheduling and grading which makes it easy for me; there's no prep work. In addition to the regular lessons, each unit has a project which requires him to do further research on a particular issue and write about it. He's learned quite a bit from it. We had not done a lot of geography up to this point, just basic stuff. We've been very pleased with this program. Good luck!
  10. My 14-old-son is enrolled in an umbrella school here locally. This past week, his choir went to a competition held at a Christian college about an hour away. Highschool tudents from Christian schools throughout Central Florida compete at this yearly event for the chance to go to Bob Jones University for a national competition. In addition to singing in the choir, my son takes an art class at the umbrella school. He signed up to enter something in the photography category of this competition. When he told me this, I was a little agravated thinking of the time and expense that it would involve. We have a cheap digital camera and don't really know a thing about photography. Well, after I got over the initial thoughts of the inconvenience of it all, we went to the library and checked out several books on digital photography which my son studied. He didn't even know how to use most of the features on the camera, but read the instruction manual and played around with the camera. He had several shots in mind that he wanted to take, including one of a little chapel in town which turned out to be his favorite. We had the image printed at Walgreens and he turned it in to his teacher. I thought he didn't have a chance of winning, but told him that I was proud of his effort and talked about what a learning experience this has been, all the while thinking that was that. You can imagine how stunned I was yesterday when they announced that my son had won first place in his category!! He will be going to BJU in April with a group from our umbrella school to compete nationally. They get to spend 3 days there and participate in some classes and Bible studies in addition to the competition. His choir came in third place, so if he had not won in photography, he would not get to go. He is thrilled beyond belief. I almost robbed my son of this experience because I didn't believe it was something that he was capable of and was hesitant to let my son step out of "my" comfort zone. God opened my eyes through this and caused me to see that I need to be open to new possibilities and opportunities for my son and not to impose limits based on my own insecurities. What a learning experience for me!!
  11. I'm 50 with a 14-yr-old. My husband is 62 and also has a 32-yr-old.
  12. My 9th grade son is using SOS World Geography this year and loves it.
  13. We are using the Red Wagon Tutorial, not the live class, for biology this year. My 14 yr. old son loves it and has been asking if we are going to use the tutorial for chem. next year. He find Mr. R very engaging and funny and is learning a lot. Good luck!
  14. I've just run into a similar situation here in Florida. We are part of a local umbrella school. We turn in lesson plans to them, as well as grades and attendance. They do not dictate curriculum, but we have to meet credit requirements for our students to receive a highschool diploma from them. Because we report to the umbrella school, my son is considered a private schooled student even though he receives his instruction from me. I wanted get my son involved in the local highschool band and football, and was informed that this is how it works in Florida. Below is a link that gives more details on how this is interpreted here. http://www.cfcacademy.org/clientimages/29597/athletics/fhsaaforms/faq%20-%20home%20school%20athletic%20eligibility.pdf Good luck.
