  1. The targeted Waldorf questions were: Children should spend plenty of time in nature and use natural materials in education. Early childhood should emphasize creative play and formal learning should be avoided before age 7. Social responsibility and empathy are important in my children's education. Self-expression through art, music, role-playing, and movement is an important part of education. Avoiding screens for children who are elementary age or younger is important. If anyone feels these are incorrect, please share. I'm not familiar with Waldorf so I compiled this list from reading about the approach.
  2. The questions related to traditional education were: Being able to transition back into a classroom is important. Having a teacher's guide is essential. I want to use curriculum that is similar to what is used in public or private schools. I prefer to purchase grade-level curriculum packages that are planned out for me. Our learning environment looks like a mini-classroom.
  3. I'm attempting to tweak a new quiz that I recently put together about homeschool philosophies. Based on some early questionnaires, I'm not sure if the classical philosophy is represented accurately. If you are very classical in your approach, please let me know if this questionnaire reveals your highest score to be classical education. You can find the quiz here: http://eclectic-homeschool.com/what-kind-of-homeschooler-are-you/
  4. Possibly. I know that AP testing is available locally. What is a LOR?
  5. I am an expat living in Ontario, Canada and even though I've lived here several years I'm still trying to figure out how the schools work here. My son is looking at going into a STEM field and we are going the portfolio/course description/SAT/plus other academic STEM competition type tests instead of the year 12 courses that most schools seem to prefer. My son may also want to go to school in the USA so I need to keep both options open. It appears as though percentages are used instead of a grade point average. Can anyone point me in the direction of a sample homeschool transcript for a Canadian university? Do you know how a total percentage is figured? Would 1 credit in an Canadian high school be the same as 1 credit in a US high school? My undergraduate education in the USA (B.S. with a minor) required a great variety of classes across many different subjects (liberal arts) and plenty of options for electives. I found that experience to be quite valuable. Looking into universities and talking to some people here, it seems as though STEM majors are pretty focused on only STEM subjects for the entire 4 years with little wiggle room for a student to change direction of study. Is this true in the USA as well or is this a Canadian thing?
  6. Alif Baa has been a great resource to get my kids started learning how to speak, hear, read, and write modern standard Arabic. After Alif Baa my son moved into Arabic for Life.
  7. If interested, I just updated the OP with a link to the winners of this round. The links to the recipes are found in the winners announcement too. Thanks for all the votes!
  8. Just an idea, but can she work through it on her own for a semester using the AOPS forum for questions, if needed. Maybe she can then enroll in the online class for what she just self-studied. I've found that AOPS solution manuals to be very helpful when I don't have a clue what I'm doing.
  9. In infancy I suspected there was something up. My high need baby had an insatiable appetite for stimulation. My other kids didn't have that same appetite and I suspected them in toddlerhood/preschool years because of things they would say or do. They were early on some milestones and late on some others.
  10. Vegetarian here too so the grilled cheese is the only one I tried. They will be having a vegetarian round at one point - I want to try all of their dishes!
  11. Yes, once the voting is closed I'll share the winner for the best tasting as well as the recipes :)
  12. Cheddar cheese, feta cheese, and tomatoes
  13. My three kids just finished the first round of a cooking around the world competition. Earlier this year they finished up a baking competition. They learned tons and enjoyed the process of seeing which recipe/participant would be the winner. We have a winner declared for the best tasting Greek dish, but we need your help. Please vote for the best looking item. Voting is open for 10 days. You can see pictures here: http://eclectic-homeschool.com/greek-cooking-competition/ Please vote on the blog or here :) Thanks for your participation! Winners announced here: http://eclectic-homeschool.com/greek-cooking-competiton-winners/ A big thanks to everyone who voted!
  14. Thanks so much! I've heard that is quite difficult to get into a Canadian university without going through the public school's online classes especially for math and science majors. I'll check out the links.
  15. For foreign language, he moved on when the subject matter was mastered. I wouldn't list the physical science class he already finished, but he is now doing biology, conceptual physics, and algebra 1. He isn't done with those yet so I can still gather some records.
  16. Those would be later on, correct? I was planning on doing that big list of things, but not until my kid was actually in 9th grade. Do you think a school would want that much detail about classes from middle school when further classes are taken in high school?
  17. If I were to assign grades, how would I assign a grade retroactively?
  18. Sounds like there are different ways to do this. We are in Canada and my son will likely apply to Canadian universities. I've been looking, but haven't found anything about high school courses that are even an option for middle school students. Any Canadians here? We are in Ontario.
  19. My son is in 7th grade and is currently doing or has done some courses that could be counted on a high school transcript (i.e. science, math, foreign language). Should I be keeping grades for these? I haven't done any grading for them so far. Or are the classes just something I list as classes completed prior to high school on the transcript? He will do further studies in all of the areas while in high school.
