  1. Thanks, that makes me feel better! I was so unsure trying to pick curriculum !

For her reading .. THe LLATL has 4 full chapter books that go along with the language arts program.

Caddie Woodlawn,Farmer Boy,Meet Addy and Trumpet of the Swan.

I also have several books like Old yeller, Bud Not buddy, Number the Stars etc that I will have her read.

We will also probably pick books to read on the Presidents and different Science topics that we will be covering. ;)

And She LOVES to read , so its really shouldnt be a problem area :)

  2. We have a house in NY, and being a single family, just my daughter and myself I often thought of that.. road schooling.. . MY parents winter in FLOrida, so we Are planning on traveling down, and although its slightly different then your situation, I think it sounds super fun. Im planning to continue the regular stuff but we will be doing lots of field trips along the way. There is so much around us to learn from, I think just look around and see what you can find! what a great experience! ;)

  3. My daughter is 9 and has gone through this sneaking food, candy etc.. She was alot worse but has gotten much better! I tried not to make a huge issue out of it, because I dont want to create a stressor or disorder for her. I just explained that she should really ask first, thats better then lying. I also said that we will compromise a snack, because she said if she asked I would say no. SO I just explained that she needs to choose healthier snacks at night etc. and eat more dinner at dinner time. Every now and then she still sneaks chocolate/candy and I think thats the sweet tooth getting to her. ( I know I do it ) ;) But best not to make a huge issue, just stating to her to please ask and we will find something to satisfy her craving, she agreed and now makes better choices for the most part ;) We also only really have candy on holidays etc.. so thats when shes found sneaking chocolate.

Anyone.. point being, if weight is not an issue, then I would just explain and not make a huge issue, better to address and then move on.. ;)

  4. I was very overwhelmed also! This will be our first year starting in Sept. I finally ordered all of our curriculum, and Im hoping also that its not this overwhelming every year! Im sure hoping after the first year it will be easier. I found it soo hard to choose with out actually "Seeing" the books. I did get a few things that Im not liking now that I see them in person, so I may just try and sell them on here or save them for later.

Is this your first year also??

This forum is definately helpful! :)

  5. Okay.. so this will be our first year HS'ing starting in Sept.

Here is what Ive decided on so far...

Also deciding on a spanish program??

Also I plan on making printable worksheet packets with things like history facts, editing but with science facts etc, puzzles, math word problem practice etc..

that I will give her on MOnday and she can do them during the week and they will be due friday.

Please let me know what you think , If Im missing anything etc.. I appreciate your input! ! :) THANK YOU !!! :)

  6. LOL .. maybe Im just one for COLOR! I hated that it was black and white page after page after page.. I like pictures too! ;) Plus I think my eyes are getting worse so I just plain had trouble focusing on those pages ;)

  7. I received one a few months back, But I think I ordered it in Feb ? Anyway.. ITs HUGE! It was way overwhelming for me, I didnt find it useful at all! The writing is really small, and theres soo much in the book, I found it easier to just search on the website. Thats just my opinion though ;)

  8. Thanks, I just received them in the mail and was planning using them for 5th grade level. I only have one child and they just seem to be more "group" or "Class" oriented. and very Black and white! I may sit down and let her look them over and see if she shows interest.

Im just not sure, it just doesnt look like a complete science program for her age.( I will sit down and review it more but a little unsure of what Im seeing so far.. ) Im all new to this so I could be very wrong! just slightly confused by the layout Im seeing ..

  9. I figured we would continue her seasonal sports, Take walks with the dogs, she loves to bike, and she loves hooping! She also wants to get a wii for the rainy days. Im still in the deciding mode for the wii. I think she may take swim lessons. She took dance for 2 years so she may do that again and I will probably get a b-ball hoop at the new house for her.

They also have a LEAH program at our local gym for home schoolers. However I have not been able to contact anyone successfully about the LEAH program.

But like most of you , I think good old fashioned outside play is always best! ;)

  10. THey have great prices on frozen strawberries and mixed berry blends! Great for making smoothies! I also buy the shredded parmesan and romano cheese, really cheap there! Their fit n Active items are great! We also bought their frozen real fish filets which are individually wrapped, I think it was $3.99 for a huge bag, that had at least 15 fillets. It was really good , cant remember the name of the fish, Im not normally a fish eatter but that was great! They also have great veggies, the frozen are great deals too! have fun! :)

  11. Thank you all for the info! I really am not a very detailed plan every minute out .. type person.. ;) But I just wanted to get an idea of how others plan their days. I know that being our first year its going to be flexible until we get things going. Shes such a smart girl and really excited for hs'ing so that should help! I have already told her that there will be things she can work independantly on and others that we will do together. I just want to have some kind of structure to start with .. lol time frames etc for each class. I know we have to send quartly reports for NY, so maybe I can just roughly estimate what needs to be covered each quarter, then that should keep us on track.

Reality is setting in and we are soo excited to start this new journey! Im so glad that I found this forum, its been such a great resource & everyone is so helpful & friendly! :)

  12. Okay I Ordered most of our curriculum for sept. This will be our first year hs'ing.

How do you even begin to plan out the lessons per subject for the year?? Time frames etc??

I know it has to fit in 36 weeks? How do you all do it?? Any help is appreciated??

    does anyone use online planners??

I'm anxiously awaiting the packages, So I can start planning ;)

Once I sort through everything I'll post a list to get opinions if Im missing anything also. ;)

    Thanks! :)

  13. Just wondering if there is a reading list here somewhere, or if you have suggestions for books . shes going to be in 5th grade when we start HS'ing.. but she does read a few levels ahead (this year 4th she reads 6th grade level) . Just general chapter or classic books at this level for book reports & supplemental use.

    Thanks :)

  14. Thanks so much ! I guess its just hard to know when its going in your first year of HS'ing. So Im trying to choose things that will make a smooth transition from PS. I Liked the looks of LLATL . Im thinking the only way to know is just research , choose and jump in ;) (For me at least) I figure we can always adjust and switch it up and add what ever we need to make it better!

_ Greta.. Im sure after my first year it will be much easier to put together curriculum and lessons time wise.. Ill have a better understanding! at least I hope so!! ;)
