  1. Thanks and Hi everyone!

I am upstate NY near Cooperstown ( Home of Baseball!)

I have read over the laws and understand I am to :

Send my letter of Intent, followed by the IHIP and Quarterly reports.

    Annual progress report.

    Standardized test scores

my question is , Im wondering how everyone in NY keeps track of grades?

Does any one have sample IHIP?? Just wondering how it needs to be written and what should be included

and the same for the quarter reports and annual report?

Also I know it says standardized tests every other year. How do I find out more about the tests and requirements and which tests need to be taken etc?? ? when to start if shes entering into 5th grade in the fall. Has been in Public school K-4th

Does she need to go somewhere to take the tests? or can I give them to her?

    Thanks so much ! :)

  2. Shes very smart actually and kind of an out of the box learner! Shes done overall very well in PS but gets bored and tired of the same old routine. I just feel she would benefit more from individualized plan at her own pace. She actually does pretty well in math < there were a few times she struggled and became frustrated but overall I think that was the teacher, and at times disliked it because it was first thing in the morning and shes not a morning person. She really does well visual and hands on. soaks up any info like a sponge!

ixl.com was recommended and I love that site and think that will be great for her! As well it has the NY standards so that will be helpful, but Im just trying to find a basic text to go along with it.

she loves online learning games etc. This will be our first year homeschooling starting sept. so this is all completely new! At times I feel overwhelmed and wonder what im getting into. Theres just an overload of materials available, and without being able to physically see them and review it seems hard to choose what to use! Life of fred really looked like something she would love but seemed way out of my price range.

Shes loves reading and writing stories, comics etc.,science experiments and is she extremely creative , loves to draw & Paint! I will be doing the art lessons as Im currently in college for an Art ed degree, so that is exciting for me!

Shes just very use to PS curriculum so I need to make the transition a positive one for her. I dont want to overwhelm her with strange material. Shes very much into the idea of homeschooling and couldnt be happier!

I plan on doing lots of field trips etc. Im sure she will do well, Its just I want to be sure Im doing it right for the state! Shes always up for a challenge, basically she loves to learn !

  3. Thank you everyone for your great feedback!

Ive been researching for hours upon hours! Im feeling a bit overwhelmed by the massive amount of information out there!

Its so hard being new and not seeing the books/workbooks in person.

For you saxon math users.. Do you think that it would be to boring for a child that struggles with math, and really dislikes it? I read that the books are kind of basic black/white format?

thanks again for all your feedback! :)

  4. Okay so I thought I would try this approach because my other thread didnt give me as much feedback as I would of liked! :) ( although I did get a few helpful repsonses, thank you)

Im new to this entire home school approach! Im wondering if you have a child in 5th grade or going into 5th grade, if you could share your curriculum with me so I can get an idea of what it should be like.

Please note being completely new to this, Im not understanding all the abbreviations etc. that people are using here on all the threads. So if you can be specific that would help.

I really appreciate everyones help! :) thank you again!

  5. Thanks so much for the response! I have not purchased anything, just been searching the internet for information and resources.

She will begin in Sept. But I have to notify her school before end of June. So Im just waiting until I can have everything all figured out.

I would be looking to do a secular curriculum, and I am a single mom, and currently in college and have my own business. I do believe that I can make the time for this and it would benefit her greatly. But looking for the least expensive way.. and from what I see there are plenty of resources online to make that possible.

I would prefer that she be able to some independant work, but I of course would be there to help and work with her on activities. I would like to do field trips and lots of hands on activities, science experiments, art projects etc.

I would like to have some structure, But Im more of a go to amazon.com and find a used book, rather then the library.

I think that I would like to use text books/workbooks to start for a structured type lessons and then add the other activities to that.

Then I did find a site that is hoodamath.com and they have great interactive lessons and games that I think would be good in addition to a text for her MAth as its her least favorite.

She does like to read & write, So I think reading books in addition to texts would be great for her also.

So its just a matter of what texts to use and creating a plan for the year for the state. Thought about just checking into the publishers that her PS used this year and finding them for the 5th grade level. Theres just so many I didnt know where to begin otherwise.

I certainly appreciate your help! :)

  6. I did check that out, a litte more then I can afford. I really liked the looks of K12 , that I heard about several years ago and have been thinking about it. When I finally made the decision to hs I checked into it but again a little more then i can afford and our state (NY) only has the private one. bummer. I guess Ill just try and piece something together from info im getting on here. If any one knows of a good guide/record keeping book. That would be helpful for me as NY requires reports. Thanks everyone!

  7. Thank you! Im brand new so its a lot to take in! :) I was wondering what is required for the quarterly reports and how you keep records? So I see many of you just put together your own curriculum, not one specific company? Is there a good reasonable priced place to order from? I thought about checking on ebay for used books. I just wasnt sure what it is that I need or how old the books could be?

  8. HELP!

If anyone could guide me in a direction for choosing curriculum. We live in NY and my daughter will begin home schooling in September. 5th grade.

Shes very smart, loves hands on activities, and computer work. She has some difficulty with Math so Im thinking an online math program would be best. Loves to write stories and read. We will probably do lots of field trips for history related topics.

I would appreciate any help, Im brand new and have really no clue where to start! Im a single mom so funds are limited.

    Thanks

    Lindsay :)
