  1. I want to get started with our switch to singapore yesterday lol. Does anyone know where I can get it that will ship quickly? Rainbow resource is kind of slow.
  2. Thanks for the links. Seems the standards has the majority vote.
  3. no, you won't be. My son only did book 1 of Horizons K and we skipped book 2 (we weren't schooling every day at that point) He then went on to the first grade program from there and did fine with it. He was 6 when we started grade 1.
  4. Which version am I supposed to get? US or standards
  5. Thanks :) What version am I supposed to get? US edition or standards?
  6. Just wondering how children doing singapore math do on state testing? We ar wanting to switch from Horizons to singapore. I know Horizons helps with good test scores... what about singapore? I am not seeing the understanding I would like to see with Horizons plus I don't like how many problems we have to cross out becuase it is too repetitive.
  7. Which one to get? The US edition or the US standards?????
  8. lol, thanks for your answer. I won't tattle on you ;-)
  9. Hey all :) We are using MFW Adventures this school year and loving it, but for next year I really wanted to try SL just so I can compare which one we like better. My children are going to be in 1st and 3rd grade. So I was thinking of doing SL Core 1 + 2 and then if we don't like it going back to MFW ECC the next year. Do you think it is a good idea since sonlight uses some of the same books as MFW ECC in that core? So my children would do SL for 1st and 3rd and then if we wanted to go back to MFW they would do ECC in 2nd and 4th grade? What do you all think?
  10. Does anyone use these two programs? I really like right start but don't want to overdo it on our school time. I was going to do Horizons with MFW because that is what we've been using but I am drawn to rightstart. Is there anyone who has paired these two?
  11. I am on moderate bedrest (due to pregnancy) right now, I can be up for 10-20 per hour, and had wanted to start school next week because I would lke to take time off when the baby comes in Novemeber. Is this doable? Is MFW something I can teach easily with my limitations? And how easy is it to take a break and pick up where left off after a few weeks or a month? This is our first year using it.
  12. I just got my book and was looking through and feel that it is a ton of dictation/copywork for a 2nd grader. Has anyone ever used this and am I being too lenient with my child or should I cut the lessons down? Micah
  13. Has anyone ever attempted this? I am pregnant and on bedrest and really wanted to get started in September on our new MFW curriculum. Is this possible? If so any advice? Micah My kids are 5 and 7
  14. We have used horizons for two years now (K & 1st) and thought about supplementing with rightstart because it looked so fun and appealing to me. Well we began doing both programs and my son is begging to stick with horizons. I think we will just use the games for areas he is doing in Horizons that I see he needs more practice on such as he did with clocks this year. After reading all the reviews and doing horizons for two years I really believe it is a stand alone math program... as I think RS is too. For us Horizons is what works though. You don't have to use two programs just because everyone else is ;) But I guess I don't have to tell you this.
  15. Agree with others in the fact that RS doesn't have to be scripted. I usually read through the lesson the night before to get an idea of what is to be taught and get the necessary manipulatives out and then the next day I just explain it in my own words. This has worked so far. I think it would be less effective if I was to sit and read the book word for word while teaching my child. The workbooks don't have any color though, and when asked my son prefers our horizons workbook. Although I think he is actually learning more of a solid foundation with RS.
  16. I really like the way rightstart teaches it. They have the kids actually use place value picture cards (hard cards with photos of blocks in thous. hund. tens. & ones) instead of numbers at first. They have to trade them with the bank when they hit more than ten... exp. If you have 12 ten picture cards you ask the bank (mom) for one hundred and you keep 2 tens. You could easily make these on your own. My son really grasped onto this quickly.
  17. just now in rightstart level B... my son is at the end of first grade. The way right start teaches it with the place value cards and then the abacus is brilliant IMO... much better than having to place all those popsicle sticks together ;-)
  18. I completely agree with the previous review on OPGTR... in my opinion it is the best. It is ALL boring though... :) I remember doing a lesson with my son where he got to use a fishing pole made from a ruler and magnet to fish for words... he really enjoys this book. I do admit though that the first lessons we did ( I think we started about a third of the way through the book) he didn't like. He used to refer to it as the boring book ;-) But we kept on and now at the end of 1st grade he is reading at a third grade level.
  19. I have used LA K with two kids now. My four year old is just finishing up. That being said though I must say that others are right on the writing portion. With both my children (both were 4 at the time of using it) we ended up just doing get ready, set, go for the code books along with the sonlight K readers. I did use the schedule to see what activities sounded good and when to read which books but it could be used with out this. Every week we would make a letter sheet with the new letter/Sound and then practice that letter in the ETC books (usually 2-3 pgs a day in these) and then read the numbered reader the whole week... over and over to gain confidence. Both my children used this, my son went from sonlight LA K straight to somewhere in the middle of OPGTTR and my daughter will start with that soon. I really don't think you need the whole setup.... most likely just the ETC books, and readers. If you have any more questions about how to set up the scheduling let me know. I am always for saving fellow homeschoolers some money. Micah
  20. don't know how to bump this up... I was hoping to get answers from users of LLATL.
  21. We are going to use LLATL Yellow next year and I noticed that the books to read are just four and you don't read everyday. I really want to have my child read every day for school. What if any did you use to supplement the reading portion of LLATL yellow? What about the phonics portion... is it enough? It looks like the phonics is only taught with the spelling?
  22. Just wanted to let you know that we used ETC with OPGTR this year of school and it worked but I would think AAS would work much better with it. I am wanting to be able to purchase AAS for our younger child and do that instead with OPGTR. Also with a reluctant writer I would not do ETC... my son complained about all the writing he had to do ( 10-12 words at a time) lol... boys
  23. Have you checked out the ordinary parents guide to teaching reading? It comes with a music CD??? I think you can check the book out from the library to look at it... I don't know if you can do that with the CD or not but it might be worth a gander.
  24. Hi, thanks for your input. Would you mind telling me what the 4th eclectic reader is? I tried to look it up on the site and couldn't find anything about it. Which child are you using it with? Your 11yr old dd or your 6yr old dd? Do you have any good books that you two have read that might help with reading more... should I just start getting chapter books from the library? Thanks Micah
