  1. I voted that I would let them win under a certain age.  More accurately, this has more to do with the maturity to handle losing.  I would never let even a small child win all the time.  We've tried to model grace in losing and teach them to as well.

Likewise until they're able to win at least some of the time, we play "easy" with them.  If we think the can hold their own, I'm all for winning.

  2. I live close to the border so I order from the US and have it delivered to an American address.  The money I usually save makes up for the pickup fees.  My favourite place is Rainbow Resource.  With the dollar tanking, you will need to do some math to see if it's worth it or not.  Keep in mind their is no sales tax on items there - just exchange and a pickup fee and shipping if you place a small order.

If I was just ordering one book, I might order from The Learning House, but shipping for one item is expensive.  I live close enough to possibly pick it up, but it's not convenient.

Here is another place I might order from:  http://www.canadianhomeeducation.com/default.aspx

  3. Something I found with my youngest son was that we had to withdraw the mild products for close to 2 weeks before it started making a great change.  It was a full month before we reached a full level of normal.

I'd likely also suggest an elimination diet taking out common allergens and very slowly adding them back in

  4. The online course uses the third edition of the textbook.  I bought two of them used on Amazon.

I ordered new activity manuals from BJU.  I think I also ordered the tests/quizzes from BJU, too, but I can't quite remember.  lol

In the future, I won't bother buying the teacher's editions of anything.  All I ever look at are the answers to the tests and the schedule of lessons.  I believe those things are available online when one buys the course..although I need to double check that to make sure.

Yes, the TMs are available online.  I only use them for chapter reviews and to help once in a while with studying terms.  I use the online tests and quizzes.

  5. You guys are making me feel better.  My youngest ds's marks have dropped 10-15% in level 6.  I've just decided to slow down a bit and do more oral review with him.  He's finally gotten over 80% two quizzes in a row.

And we enjoy the Bible as well.

  6. For six of us, I do laundry 6 days per week.  I hang out and fold most of it.  The guys put their own away while I take care of dh and myself.  Ds18 has started doing his own work clothes since he doesn't have more than about 2 wearings and I won't let those clothes in with the rest.

I found it was more hassle to try to give that responsibility to the boys.  I have them do other chores.

  7. My ds 12 started 87 from SM 6A when he was almost 11.  Skill wise he tested into that level, but he found the extra workload and the variety of questions really tough.  For the first while, I would have him do a timed math test and about 1/2 lesson per day.  Slowly we built up to a full lesson some days.  I still teach the lesson part to him as well as do the mental math with him.  For difficult problems he will wait until I'm free to help.  We've also taken a couple of short breaks to do AOPS.  I really believe that the timed math tests are key to learning the basics to the point of instant recall.  Currently he's doing lesson 94 or so and we've had to slow down again because he has a couple of concepts that he's not very solid with.  We will complete 87 this January in a year and a half.

Ds 10 switched into Saxon 76 from SM5B this fall.  His skills weren't quite as strong as his brothers.  So far he's cruising through (L38).  His lessons are completed in about 1/2 hour.  Part of me wishes I had backed the older guy up to 76.

ETA:  With ds 12, we're currently stopping math after 1-1.25 hours regardless of how much is completed as long as he's giving it a serious amount of attention.

  8. Another vote for making lots of supper the night before and letting them eat it for lunch.  My guys even eat leftovers for breakfast sometimes.  Chili and soups/stews are favourites.  We also often have some baked oatmeal and yogourt for whatever meal they like.  If I put out a container of prepped vegies, they always disappear.  They're on their own in making breakfast and lunch.  I usually make supper for them.

  9. You guys make me glad that I live where I do.  In Ontario, they will give them enough credits to enter the year they would normally be in, conditional on if they pass the courses the first year.  That means that my ds started in grade 11 and graduated with his age mates.  Ds 16 is doing the same thing.

This way we skip the messy grades 9 and 10, but the have a regular diploma.

  10. We switched after SM5.  Ds12 went into Saxon 87.  There weren't any gaps that I can think of.  The biggest adjustment was getting used to the heavier workload.  We took extra days to get lessons completed so he wouldn't have too much work.  Both kids were all ready doing the timed math tests.  Ds 10 switched to Saxon 76 since he's a bit weaker in math and his brother was still using the 87 book.  That transition has been really easy.  So far (lesson 35), it's all review.

I do much of the teaching with the guys as well as the mental math at the beginning of the lesson.
