  1. Thanks. Glad to know I didn't just miss it in my reading. I thought I had scoured all the pages I had :).
  2. Thanks for your input. I didn't realize that I could possibly look at LoF through ILL. Glad to hear Videotext is working out for you.
  3. Glad to hear I'm not the only one collecting old and current used Math books :001_smile:. Sad isn't it. I agree about the terminology in Dolciani. I want ds to become familiar with the language of math which is exactly why I thought covering Pre-Alg with it would be good because he's already familiar with the math. I may just continue on with it at a brisk pace before jumping into an Alg program. What are you planning to use for Alg? Trying to keep up with Latin, Greek, CW and Math makes my brain hurt most days.
  4. Cynthia, do you think that it would be more beneficial to follow a more standard text to get ds used to the format? I haven't seen the AoPS books so I don't know how they are set up. On the one hand I so appreciate what SM has done for ds but on the other hand I wonder if now is a good time to transition to tackling a textbook. Thanks for posting.
  5. Thanks Abbey. I had come across that website some time ago and thought I had saved it but could not find it again. My favorites on my computer need some serious cleaning up!! I will poke around the site some more. Did you buy the teacher's edition for the book you listed below? If not, would the ISBN be listed inside the cover of your student book? I did see that edition when I was looking around last year but wasn't sure if the teacher's edition would match exactly. Imagining "T" cackling through a math lesson brought a smile to my face:D He's one smart cookie! I'm glad you mentioned the syllabi because that was very helpful in seeing how the class was paced. Handling these huge textbooks compared to the SM books makes setting a pace a little daunting. Thanks again for your help.
  6. The Elem Alg book I was referring to is the 4th Edition of the Larson/Hostetler text. I did cross post on the HS board so hopefully Jane and Kathy will see it. So you use Foersters and then transition to CD for Pre Calc? Is there a teacher's edition for Foersters or are you only using the student book. I've looked at too many programs and now they are starting to run together :tongue_smilie: Thanks for your input.
  7. Abbey, Can you tell me more about your use of Dolciani. What edition are you using? Where did you purchase your materials. What made you decide on that program? I don't want to hijack this thread so do you mind posting in a thread I just wrote on needing help with math progression. Thanks.
  8. Carbon Chemistry Mapping the World with Art Art of Problem Solving books High school science books/curriculum
  9. Ds (11) is currently a 6th grader and completed the Sing Math Primary Math series in Oct 2008. We had just made a cross country move and I was dealing with health issues so I did not want to jump in with an Algebra program without doing more research. I decided to have him finish the CWP and IP books we still had added in Zaccarro’s Prim Grade Challenge Math and a few other miscellaneous books borrowed from the library. A few years ago I purchased Dolciani’s 1977 Edition of Pre-Algebra so I decided to start that this fall even though I know some kids go straight into Alg after SM6. I wanted to solidify concepts before moving onto Alg. Well, ds is not thrilled with the book – doesn’t like the format (it is an old textbook) and says that he already knows this stuff. So we have just been doing a few problems from each section. Am I just wasting his time because of my insecurity of making sure there are no gaps? I already own NEM 1 (actually two copies of the set…don’t ask) but it scares the life out of me. I am NOT a math whiz and never took Advanced Alg. Ds likes the sample pages of Discovering Math but I feel like he needs to get used to a different format. I borrowed Jacob’s Elem Alg but ds found it too wordy which makes me think that LoF will not be a great fit either. I considered Russian Math but without solutions I don’t think I would be able to handle it. I would love to use Foerster with the DVDs from Math without Borders but I have never seen the text in person and wanted to get some advice before purchasing more stuff. I also own a used copy of the Chalkdust Elem Alg text and could try that but I’ve read that it is a college text and may not be appropriate for younger kids. After cruising along through elementary level math I find myself spinning wheels trying to figure out where to go next. My math resource shelf has grown exponentially in the past year!! I think the fact that math is an impt subject I feel more pressure to not mess up. Also ds is mathy and I don’t want to ruin his love for the subject by picking the wrong curriculum. Although, lately math hasn’t been fun for him which is why I thought I should get some advice. Any thoughts, suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Sorry if I rambled. I lost my first posting when the boards logged me out so I had to retype this.

  11. Absolutely no idea. We've only lived here a year. I guess there must be somebody out there with a lot of time on his/her hands. I really don't go out of my way to make enemies, ykwim :tongue_smilie:
  12. Not vegan or vegetarian but our family eats meat in small quantities. I have borrowed Nava Atlas' bks from the library and made quite a few recipes for quick and easy ones. Her website Vegkitchen.com has several on there that you could try. Another poster mentioned Indian cooking. If you are interested, a book was recently published by Madhu Gadia called the Indian Vegan Kitchen. I have not seen it but do own her first book. HTH
  13. Would you believe that the person posted the ad again with a few minor changes??? It's been taken off now after I filed another 911 report with Craigslist. I also called the local Sheriff's department and an officer was here this morning to file a report. Not a fun way to start our school day. I decided to follow a reduced schedule day - my concentration is shot.
  14. My family just returned and I need to get dinner :001_smile: but you can get a good idea from the website at cleaneatingmag.com. Don't type in magazine. The only downside is that it is quarterly, so a long wait between issues! HTH
  15. I don't think so - but I don't know for sure. Maybe she will chime in if she sees this, unless she wants to remain anonymous ;)
  16. Oh, it's perfectly fine to ask for info...you weren't hijacking. Glad the thread helped you.
  17. Do you like it? I have subscribed to different cooking magazines for several years and discontinued them all for the past couple of years. Life was just too crazy and I decided to get them from the library if I had the urge. I was toying with the idea of subscribing to Eating Well but I happened to see a copy of Clean Eating at B&N recently and was intrigued. Our library does not subscribe to it. Any opinions about the magazine? Thanks.
  18. Thank you again for all the responses. My day was derailed yesterday and I couldn't respond earlier. Brenda in FL: thanks for linking the other thread. That had some good info. Techwife :The info about short summary and lengthy summary is not in the Med guide. I purchased a print version at convention so that may be in the ebook version. In my HO guide the only specific info the on writing is a brief paragraph about Outlining. I think this kind of info should be included in all guides because not everyone starts the program with Ancients. Please continue to post if you are using HO and how it is working for you.
  19. I wanted to let you know that after we returned home from dinner out last night, I was nervous about the info shared on my later post so I asked admin to delete it. Thank you for your help in navigating Craigslist. It took me a couple of hours to finally get the complaint form to load. Wonder if others were having problems too!! I did send off a 911 harassment email. I did notice this morning that both listings were removed. We plugged in one phone and answering machine while we were away this morning and there were a ton more msgs on the machine. Unplugged it again until I can get dh to record a new outgoing msg this evening. I was also hoping to hear something more from Craigslist. Do I need to email them again or will they let me know what happened? I'm hoping to find out more before we take the more serious step of changing our phone #. What a way to waste a day! It sure was a bizarre introduction to Craigslist. I've never been interested and now it makes me want to stay away. Thanks again. VH P.S. I would appreciate the details of my situation to be left out if you do respond to this thread. Thanks.
  20. The first 2 volumes of SOTW were originally recorded by Barbara Alan Johnson. However they are not longer available unless you find used copies. They contain the text of the very first editions of Vol 1 and 2. Peacehill Press now has all four volumes recorded by Jim Weiss.
  21. Thanks Abbey, that was helpful. It is always helpful to hear from others using the same curriculum. I think what has made it more challenging is not having a consistent amount of required writing in HO. Some lessons ask for a ton more than others and if that week coincides with an already busy week....well that makes for one hairy week!!! I am picking and choosing the writing assignments based on how much other writing we are doing that week but it is helpful to know what others are doing. Yes, it has been a learning curve for ds too. However, I think he is learning how to take more ownership of his work and the increased writing will stand him in good stead even if he's not too thrilled about it right now. I was starting to dread our long school days. I also don't want him to hate history either!
  22. We prefer the version by Barbara Johnson and the audio books of SOTW have been money well spent.
  23. I'll join the group that does not do a formal state history study. I think it is typically done in 4/5th grade but we have moved around a lot and so we just get books about whichever state we were in at the time, visit the history museums, other historic sites, camp at state campgrounds with ds doing a Jr. Ranger program informally. IMHO, we have learned quite a bit without spending a chunk of time on any one place and doing one specific project.
  24. could you tell me how much writing your dc are doing. Are they completing all the writing assignments? For example: Lesson 13 states - write a short summary on St. Augustine, Duke William, Alfred the Great, King Canute, and King Arthur ....how long are these summaries supposed to be? Seems like a lot of writing when that lesson already includes writing an outline for the relevant KHE pages. I am trying to figure out what is realistic for us to do given that we are working through CW Homer and Math seems to be taking longer this year. Also, how many lessons do you cover each week? Any other ideas or tips for using HO. This is our first year using HO and second rotation of history. Thanks in advance
