  1. I found my answer. Look at Cathy Duffs reviews.
  2. Hi, I am looking into ordering Easy grammar 5, and trying to see if I only need the teacher edition and make copies when needed. We are coming from using Hake grammar which my daughter is not too thrilled with. She gets confused and overwhelmed with the amount of work in Hake. Thanks
  3. Just curious how long it takes your child to do their lessons? Just an average would be nice. I am trying to schedule out my 5th graders time. She will be doing the writing and grammar portions. Thanks, Crystal
  4. I need ideas for my dd who wants to start to learn Spanish. I know a bit from my high school learning, but not much :) I am confused at all the programs and which to start since she is not starting in the early elementary years. Thanks!
  5. Hi All, I am bringing my kids back to homeschooling and my 4th grade dd took the saxon placement test and squeaked by on the placement into saxon 7/6. Do you all think I should do 7/6 with her or 6/5 to be safe and make sure concepts are sunk in? Thanks, Crystal
  6. Goldilocks, that is so funny about what you said. I never feel caught up. Your right, I guess it is just a large family thing. We have thought about the partial family home school. The only glitch I have with that is not the freedom to take trips when we want and then I would have to haul all the younger kids to pick those kids up every day. Probably not really good enough reasons but they are on our pros and cons list :) Thanks for your thoughts and reply's.
  7. Hi, I have 5 children. Currently, 7th,4th,2nd,K and Preschooler (Boy,Girl,Boy,Boy,Boy respectively). We homeschooled my oldest until he wanted to attend 5th grade at the local public school. He now attends a charter school along with his siblings who have been in school for the past 2yrs. My oldest kids are really on the fence about homeschooling again, especially my Girl. They both do really well at school. Sure school has it's tough moments but overall it's been pretty good for them. My middle child likes school a lot but is struggling and I would like to work more one on one with him but not in a afterschool mode because he's too tired by the end of the day and it's hard enough to get homework done. The real reason I would like to homeschool again is because I feel like all my interactions with my kids are at stressful times of the day. I feel like our family time has been taken away and we don't even do that many extra curricular activities outside of school. Weekends are always busy trying to catch up and most evenings are CRAZY. I am not sure if it's just me and my larger family, but how do families deal with this craziness? I keep thinking maybe I just don't got it together and if I have hard time with them IN school how can I now homeschool 5 kids. Each week when I am at church I feel the impression to bring them home because we need to focus on more time as a family and my kids need to know how to interact with each other again. It's amazing how my kids are little angels at school but crazy, whiny lunatics at home. However, there are many days when I take them to school or go help at school and I think they are just fine here or there's no way I can offer them what they are getting here at school. I guess this post is bit more of what's on my mind and wondering if anyone else has gone through the same agony of whether to homeschool again? Thanks for listening/reading :)
  8. When he looks back at what he writes he still sees nothing wrong a lot of the time. But I'm not sure if it's more out of laziness to not correct. We do a lot of reread this sentence and does that sound correct. Wendy I love the tape recorder idea and the other words you reminded me of with SWB. Thank you
  9. Hi All, I have an 8yr old boy who is currently in 2nd grade public charter school. I home schooled kinder and he has attended school for 1st and will finish up 2nd this May. I will be homeschooling him and his 4 siblings again this next school year. He is my middle child of the 5. He is having a hard time with writing and I am trying to figure out what would best benefit him. When he writes sentences, they usually do not make sense. For instance he will write "He gone to the zoo". He writes what I would consider on a 1st grader level. He completely messes up verbs, verb tenses, word tenses and his spelling is the most creative spelling I have ever seen :) I get the spelling, but he does not talk like he writes. Even his teacher is not sure what to do at this moment. I know I want to go back to some basics. I have used FLL and WWE with his older brother. I think him telling me what he wants to write and I transcribe and then he copies will be helpful. I think there are too many steps for him at this moment to get his thoughts written down correctly. He does not focus well and I have to tell him things multiple times before it sinks in that he needs to get something done. I would love to hear from some seasoned moms if you have had any experience with this kind of writing. Thanks, Crystal
  10. Hi, I am so lost on what to do for writing for my family. I have a 10yr old boy who does not like writing and probably can't even write a paragraph. He is a smart boy who catches on fast, I just haven't pushed writing. I feel the pressure now because we are looking to get him into a charter school in a year or two and I don't want him to feel silly for not being able to write well. As for my other children who will be starting K and 2nd this next coming homeschool year for us, I just want them to start on the right path and do better than I have been doing with the oldest. I have looked at IEW and I think the only thing holding me back on that one is the price. I feel like I really need the teacher help and would have to spend $249 to get that and then if you do the continuation intensive courses that's another $200, geesh is all I have to say to that. We can afford it but I am wondering if that is the best option for our family. Are there other programs out there that do well as IEW? I have to say we have tried WWE and it's ok, but I don't really feel like it helped my son at all. Another concern I have is grammar with IEW. Do you do your own separate program with that or is one needed? Grammar and writing are two of my least favorite subjects, please help with ideas for 5th grader who is behind an how to not mess up the rest :)
  11. Hi, I have ordered the self paced greek and roman history from veritas press and I was wondering if I have to have the history cards? We did the first sample week and liked it, but not sure if the cards are really necessary? Thanks, Crystal
  12. bump. I bought the student book for grade 3, but looks like I need the teacher manual. For instance there is a blank bingo card in the student book with no instructions on what to do.
  13. one thought of mine is how hard is it for him to read regarding his eye sight? Have you had his eyes checked. Also, did he learn to read slowly? Many ladies on my local homeschool yahoo group talk about visual tracking and they actually had to see an eye specialist to get a diagnosis on what was going on with their children and they found out that it was physically hard for them to read because of some kind of tracking issue with their eyes and with therapy they were able to help the problem a lot.
  14. Maybe your children will be like mine and could care less about the tiles and we just write what we need on a small white board they hold in their lap. We don't have a magnetic board to keep them on and so it is too frustrating pulling them out each time for a lesson, goes much better for me to just write what I am teaching and then they can write on the small board too. I know this defeats the multi-sensory, but it works for my kids and thought I would throw out the idea that you don't need the tiles at all and still be successful.
  15. Great idea critterfixer. I will try making her spell it. I think that will be a big help.
