  1. The point to me is that I can verify funds are in my possession before handing over access to the house, keys and remotes.

We didn't get the keys at closing.  Later on that afternoon, our lawyer verified with theirs that the funds had been turned over and then our Agent got the key out of the lock box and put it under the gnome on the front steps for us to pick up after dinner.  The other key and garage remotes were left on the kitchen counter.

  2. That must be specific to your area in TN but it's definitely not TN law. We're in TN, and the sellers were in the room with us.

Never said it was the law, just stating what happened for us.  I'm guessing it's because we weren't using the same lawyer for closing, so they went to theirs and we went to ours.

I also don't really see a point in them all being at the same table as there is often not an actual check, since it is often done electronically.

  3. Never had everyone in the same room either. We just bought a house in TN. Our closing was at 10 am on Thurs at our RE attorney's office. The sellers closing was supposed to be wed evening, but they didn't make it back to town in time, so it was at 1pm the day we closed, but at their attorney's office. The only other person at our closing was our agent, who is now our backyard neighbor.

  4. reclining doesn't bother me as I've only ever been on one flight where a full meal was served.  Now airlines that think it's acceptable to put a 4 year old 3 rows behind her mother and her 6 year old brother 2 more rows behind that with grandma 5 rows behind brother is just wrong.  Especially when they allowed you to pick seats beforehand when booking the tickets and then changed them at check in because some rowdy arrogant frat boys wanted to sit by their buddies.  The guys in question were pissed and cussed up a storm when the flight attendant said they needed to move them. Sorry dude, me sitting by my child, trumps your grown friends' desire to sit with you.

  5. We just moved so things will be changing, but for the last 3 years my husband was on a ship that required he be at work by 0430 which meant getting up at 0330 to make sure he could get to the shipyard on time.  I am not a morning person, my kids are not morning people, but we someone didn't have an issue with it seeming like we lived separate lives.  We still could eat together if one of us wasn't running someone to an activity, we still had some time to hang out together, but I had no reason to wind down with him and wake up at the ungodly hour of 0330 just to sit around and wait for the rest of the world to start up for the day.  Not much is open at that hour other than the 24 hour walmart.  Our family would have been much more unpleasant to be around if we all were on the same wake up at 0330 and in bed by 2100 schedule.  Heck my daughter's swim practice didn't start until 1930, so we first go home between 2100 and 2130 depending on if it ran late or she asked a coach for a some help with something.

  6. TN is easy to homeschool in............ you do have to do more than a NOI but it's not hard to do what you want to do.

I'm using Homelife so it won't be too hard,  We're already registered with them, just have to update the address once we're in TN and then turn in my grades as needed this year.   My kids are looking forward to the no testing unless it's for mom and dad only part of it.

  7. I'm sorry you've had such bad experiences. Again, I'd ask where you are, but I won't share my location, so I won't bug you. Sorry it was a pain every year and that you're leaving this great state.

I don't mind saying it.  I am in Chesapeake, at least for the next 5 days I am.  Being that I'm not from VA, I'm quite happy to be moving on.  We're going to TN which is much closer to the midwest where I grew up.  I'm just not a coast person.

  8. I'm married to a pack rat, purging is not in his DNA, we have way to much stuff.  I've been looking at the box numbers and they are past 303 and they haven't even done our bedroom and the garage yet.   :scared:

We tried feeding our packers a few times, that was always a nightmare.  They took 3 times as long as any other time.  I always have some snacks (today I had grapes) and soda/water for them, but no more lunch.   I don't begrudge them lunch, but if they want one they have to bring their own or go get something.  Seems that if they are on their dime they only take 30-60 minutes instead of just hanging around eating until all the pizza/sandwiches are gone.

  9. Just wanted to clarify that the VA requirement for test is any nationally normed standardized test, but the goal is the 4th stanine/23rd (not 25th) percentile.  And that is the composite score for Math and LA.

There are other options for VA too, you can choose to enroll in a distance learning program and then don't have to do the testing.  There is a portfolio option as well, but that requires a VA certified teacher to review it.

I would just pick a state and not worry about it as you won't actually be turning in a notice of intent because no district would know what the heck to do with it since you don't actually live in that district.

Like someone up thread mentioned, you won't actually be required to file these things, so it's not really something I would worry about.

  10. We are going to Travis AFB In Fairfield, CA between Sacramento and San Franciso. We are going to live in Vacaville.

Anybody know of a house for rent in Vacaville? Perferably with a pool ??

I wish I would have known, We have friends that were former military that were going to rent their house in Vacaville, but had no takers so they ended up selling.

  11. I have to say I'm pretty proud of my plan.   :thumbup1:

They do get moving amnesia.  This is our 10th move in 19 years, with this last one being our longest time anywhere (there were times we were moving every 8-12 months) after almost 7 years here he has no clue what it was like to move all those other times.  Of course his amnesia is helped by the fact that out of these 10 moves he's actually only been around for 3 of them.

I guess it's kind of like women that somehow manage to forget the pain of childbirth, but once it starts it all comes rushing back.

I will admit that my biggest success of this pack out is not the awesome schedule I came up with but the fact that I managed to wrangle DH down to only moving enough of our own crap, via the partial DITY move, to fit in the 5'x8' uhaul trailer instead of having to use the 6'x12' he always insists on packing to the max.

  12. I'm dealing with packers right now as well.  They arrived 44 minutes ago.  It will take them 3 days to pack and then they'll pick up on Friday.  Yes I know, we have a lot of stuff.  Luckily I scheduled well and my dh is still on the ship today and tomorrow doing check out.  My dogs and cat are at the Kennel and my kids are at my mom's in WI.  It's just me and the bearded dragon.   Thursday will be crazy when he's home though.  Somehow they never seem to remember how this goes.

  13. This just makes me glad that we're moving out of VA.  We've been here for 6.5 years and every stinking year I get a call asking why my kids grade levels aren't on the NOI letter I send.  "The state law doesn't require me to provide you with that information.  Have a nice day" Click  I'll be so happy when I don't have to deal with her anymore.

  14. My husband and I have Fitbit Flexes, we like them.  I also have a zip but found it a pain to move from my pocket.  The flex is just on my wrist 24/7 unless it needs charging. I have used the silent alarm and it scared the dickens out of me that first day. LOL  My husband's coworker has the Fitbit Force which does have a clock, but there were some issues with it so I haven't seen one on the shelves in some time.

  15. my 9 year old has an apple id.  I had no problem setting it up for him.  My daughter 12 and other son 15 each have their own but the 12 and 9 year old use mine to buy apps so we can all share.  The 15 year old asks for gift cards to support his app buying.

  16. I'm sorry you're having to deal with it all.  My husband is active duty Navy, so I get the not knowing what's going on part.  His schedule is always as he likes to say "Set in warm jello"  Fortunately we've only ever had one pay issue and that was his first ship right after we got married.  He signed papers for them take his wardroom dues and food payments (he's an officer so he has to pay for his food) out of his check.  Turns out they never did and all of a sudden we got a check for the month for his pay of $184.11.   He's got 19 years in now (we've been married for 17) we have one more tour left and then he's done.  I'm glad this last one is a  nice desk job in a Millington TN, it will be a nice change from the 10 years of consecutive sea tours we've had.

  17. Forgot to say that the stuff they use for hot chocolate at SB is more of a dark chocolate and even the Hershey's special dark syrup doesn't taste the same, but I've found that if I mix 1- 2tbsp cocoa powder  with 1tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp hot water it is just about right.  I put a range for the cocoa powder, because it will depend on what brand you use and how strong you like it.

  18. I've tried the Keurig hot chocolate (luckily my kid's dentist has one in her office for us to use while we wait) and it was NASTY, it wasn't creamy like a mocha or hot chocolate would be at Starbucks, it was like water with a dash of chocolate flavor.

I am not a coffee fan, but love my double chocolate chip frappucino (iced hot chocolate anyone?) or the refreshers made with green coffee extract in the summer.  For winter it's always a hot chocolate with hazelnut or the Caramel Apple Spice.

  19. I'm in the same boat with my son starting 9th and needing to continue AG, his spelling program, and he'll just be starting WWS1, we have tried it in the past but he just wasn't up for it.  For lit I'm using the EIL book list from Intro for lit (but subbing in more Poe for the short stories instead of what they use since he just discovered Poe and wants to read more of him) but will just be discussing the books ala Teaching the Classics instead of doing the writing in EIL.

  20. What time do you go to bed? DH around 2030 and I am usually up until 0200

Do you and your spouse make a point to go to bed at the same time most nights? No, I'm a night owl and he has to be up too early to stay up with me.

What time do you get up in the morning? DH gets up at 0330 and then is out the door by 0400, I get up around 0800 or so

Do you get up in the mornings around the same time? If I were to be up when DH got up it would be because I hadn't gone to sleep yet, and yes that's happened.
