  1. I have awesome half sheet pans from King arthur flour but they don't have a non-stick surface.  I don't care for those as they never last.  I bought two silicone baking mats to use with them and voila! no sticking but don't have to deal with non-stick coatings.

  2. Make sure you're following any rules that would apply for your state or cover school etc.  I know not everyone has a cover school or lives in a state that has lots of rules, but I thought it was worth mentioning.  I recently moved to TN where I'm under a cover school and they require all high school courses to have a letter grade, Pass/Fail grades are not accepted for high school.

  3. not far.  I make a pound of taco meat every Tuesday (because it's always Taco Tuesday)  We do use tortillas, and only my dh, myself and our oldest son eat.  Once the Dh and 15 year old son get done, I'm lucky to get one taco.  When I make a pot roast for the 5 of us it has to be at least 3lbs or there are no leftovers.  When I make pasta I use a 1lb box for the 5 of us and we're lucky to have enough for DH to have a small portion for lunch the next day.

I know most would say my issue is the teen boy and his now teen sister who can eat more than him and is thin as a rail, but it's really the 9 year old who can out eat both of them combined if it's something he likes.  No idea where the kid puts it as he's not even 4ft tall and only weighs about 50lbs.

  4. the only issue with KAs is the if you have one that's 15+ years old it's worth keeping, but the newer ones don't have all have the metal gears that those base models from a  couple decades ago have.  The new ones aren't made like the old ones.  My bosch has a blender attachment.  If I had gotten it before the vitamix it would be more than sufficient for the stuff I like to blend.

  5. I have a cuisinart essentials stainless steel set and love it.  I do have 1 teflon pan but that's only used for eggs.

ETA: forgot to say I have had this set for about 6 years now and never regretted it.  It was a 10 piece set and was about $130

I have a vitamix and it's great, but I don't use it as much as many people here do.  I got it with a 40% off coupon at Bed Bath and Beyond, so I can't help on how old is too old.

I have owned both a KA artisan, Pro 5 and 2 different Bosch Universal mixers.  If you plan to make bread more than one loaf at a time and more than maybe twice a week I'd stay away from the Artisan for sure.  I would say if you're planning to make bread or bread doughs at all save up and get a Bosch, but if you must go Kitchen aid then go Pro 6.   I still have my artisan, but it sits on top of my kitchen cabinets and almost never gets used. I keep it because it's a pretty apple green color and looks nice as a decoration.

  6. We have grilled cheese every monday night.  We're pretty boring though.  Just bread buttered on the outside with Kraft Deli Deluxe slices (must use 2 per sandwich)  My eldest like 2 slices of clausen pickles in the middle with the cheese.  DH likes bacon.  All of us dip them in ketchup though.

  7. We're fly by the seat of our pants laundry folks.  My kids laundry is all washed separately, the only people's clothes ever mixed together in a load are dh and my clothes.  My older two kids do their laundry whenever they feel the need and have since they were about 9 and 11.  My youngest is still too short to reach in the washer and top load dryer, so I do his when ever he brings his full hamper to me.  The laundry of my dh and I get's done whenever one of us grabs a load and puts it in.  I also don't wash sheets on any set schedule, it's totally random, and could be as often as weekly and as few and far between as monthly.

  8. You want to know what is stuck in my head right now?  The theme song from "Shaft"!  Other times I find myself humming the Macarena.  What is wrong with my brain?!

What are songs you've had stuck in your head that you have no idea how they got there?

I get this song stuck in my head every time I drive home from town.  I live just north of Millington, TN and one town North of me is the Hometown of Isaac Hayes, and there is a sign stating so, that I see every time I'm coming home from Millington.

  9. I have both a Bosch Universal, a Kitchen aid Artisan, and a vitamix.  I have been in the Bosch vs. Kitchen aid dilemma for a while.  I went back and forth, Actually bought and sold the Bosch 3 times.  I finally realized that the Bosch is just superior, if you're going to make bread at all the Bosch is so much better at it.  I even had a Kitchen aid Pro model and the bread dough just never was a good as the bread dough the Bosch makes up.  With the Bosch I can literally just dump the stuff in turn it on and walk away for 6 minutes and come back to perfectly kneaded dough.  The Bosch blender attachment is decent, and I would rather have a Bosch with it than just the KA and a Vitamix.  I did that and it as ok, but I'd give up a little in the blender area to get a better mixer.  I'm not sure what is meant by "you don't need to stir in the middle of a cycle" in the post above.  I don't have to stir anything in my Vitamix.  I turn it on low, ramp up the dial to 10 flip it to high and boom perfectly pureed whatever I'm making.

ETA: we're a family of 5.  I make and freeze bread/pizza crust dough 1-2 time a week, on top of the usual cookies, muffins, etc.

  10. That is so awesome!

And...knitting group? Here at WTM? Can someone point the way?

    I guess it's not really a group, but a thread where we've been listing what we're working on.  Here's a link http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/531354-knitters-what-are-you-working-on/

How did you make the weeping angel?

I bought it from www.thinkgeek.com.  I saw some instructionals on Pinterest about how to make one from a barbie, but I had so many other things I was making I didn't have time to make the angel.

  11. Nukeswife, I love the scarf!

I found out a couple of days ago that my LYS is hosting a white elephant hat exchange. I just whipped up this hat in bright pink Red Heart acrylic. I'm going to knit a nice beret, and tuck it neatly inside the icky acrylic one. But isn't part of the fun of a white elephant seeing what awful items get passed around?

This scarf is made of icky red heart because it's just going on the tree.  I have KnitPicks Wool of the Andes that I plan to use to make a full size one some day.

  12. Kel,

    What sock pattern is this?

    Thanks!

The red socks were just a Toe up stockinette stitch sock that I made up myself.  I follow the "recipe" from Knit Freedoms Toe up sock pattern. I figure out stitches around by measuring the foot and then multiplying by stitches per inch, then I subtract 10-15% depending on how snug I want them to fit.  I usually cast on 12-20 stitches depending on who I'm making the socks for.  I use the Fleegle heel for them.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about how I do it.  Just PM me.

  13. That's so clever! Now I'm thinking about how one would do a Who-themed tree. Perhaps a little knitted fez for a tree-topper?

I bought a Weeping Angel Tree Topper, am making fake 3D glasses, have printouts to make a pandorica box.  I crocheted this little adipose the other day bfb77152-9d03-4575-bcd7-f940f33116e5_zps

and am going to make a few creepy snowmen out of styrofoam balls.  I have a tardis, cyberman head, and dalek glass ornament.  I'm sure my kids will help me come up with other items too.
