  1. My daughter just porfolio'd it as a half credit. In WA hs'ers can submit their work through parent partner programs to validate the work for hs credit. A full credit is based on 150 hours of work, we had to add extra stuff to beef it up to 80 for the half credit.
  2. My daughter will be 13 in June and start High School in the fall. We plan for her to take couple classes at our local school (WA allows pt enrollment) where she'll take French 2 (I'm sure the older kids will LOVE having the 13 yo in the class..sigh) if she stays on track she will graduate at 16. As a serious dancer there are some significant advantages to her being done with high school since that would free her up to take out of area apprentice positions. However, if she doesn't have the maturity we expect OR struggles somewhere down the road we reserve the right to add that extra year. (local school calls them 'super seniors' lol) My older son will graduate at 17 (by only a few weeks) so we've been down this path before and so far it's turned out to be a good decision for him except that he tried out for the ps bball team and the ONLY reason he didn't make it is that even though he was tall enough at 5'10 he hadn't begun to 'fill in' yet at 13 compared to the other boys trying out who could run right through him. Good luck on whatever you decide, it's never easy!
  3. I was 19 when I graduated from public school. I survived :001_smile:My mom would have been a great hs'er too bad she didn't know it was an option. The truant officers came when I was 7 and made her put me in school ( she was so bummed! "But she's so YOUNG for school" lol) so I was always old for my grade. I spent my whole senior year writing notes "I didn't feel like coming yesterday" lol
  4. My daughter is math pokey also. She is good at it but just SLOW. We began her in 8th grade Algebra becausse we planned for her to take 2 years to complete it. She has nearly reached the halfway mark now with 8 weeks left in our school year so when she finishes I'll find some online/dvd resources to review and supplement and she'll start part B in the fall. If your absolutely committed to her taking Geometry in the fall Then I'd start condensing, fewer problems per page eliminate all the review sections and pretty much skip the last few chapters which are normally reintroduced in Alg2. I'm not familiar with Chalkdust curriculum but most curriuclums have more material that is really needed. Also, something to consider, my oldest son went straight from Alg 1 to Alg 2 and saved a TON of time not having to review so many items. Gave him a chance to get a head start on Geometry which has been very challenging for him since he over thinks his proofs.
  5. My son is scheduled to take the test this year through the local hs (plan ahead as some districts are better than others at accommodating hs'ers!) In addition to our regular studies we got an AP prep book from Borders (about $12) that had lots of practice essay questions and was in chronological order so as he completed a section he'd do the practice essays for the corresponding time period. He will finish his text by the end of this month and spend the final 3 weeks prepping for the test. I'll let you know how it works out :001_smile:
  6. Just @ $150 a month for 3 phones with text email etc. We decided the upgrade from our less expensive plan was a school expense. Since my poor unsocialized homeschool daughter neede to keep in better touch with her several out of state friends. ;)
  7. Just want to thank the OP for putting this out there. It is THE reason I came back to this forum (seriously!) I got just ONE card too many this season and was feeling SO discouraged. Then I made the mistake of working on the months budget BEFORE working on my lesson plan and it was all just so discouraging. The choices we make seem so insignificant. What's the point? I could be working we could be.....blah blah blah... it hasn't helped that school has not gone well this year and I'm just feeling discouraged. I'm also in a season of life where I'm socially isolated from 'real' homeschoolers and miss my former hs community I left behind when we moved away from Vegas. I guess what I'm trying to say is it's nice to around other crazy people who are putting their kids first over vacations and things. I know it's no guarantee that they'll be successful or turn out 'better' but it's nice to feel there are others who think the effort is worthwhile. Thank you!
  8. for an 8yo it would depend on the child. It's really pretty mild but some episodes are intense or just a bit weird and might be confusing. I have the 3 dvd box set myself (can you say Trekkie?)and my kids have seen (and loved) a handful of the episodes but there are some we won't watch together yet for various reasons. We DID see the new Trek movie in the theater together and everyone loved it so much (a few really unfortunate PG13+ comments!) we saw it back to back in the theater then bought it the DAY it came out. I'd say watch a couple episodes then decide or preview them prior to letting your child watch and be prepared to discuss them. Steer clear of the books though they were written with an adult audience in mind and many would be R rated if you rated books like movies! (I only mention this because I had a friend who's 10 yo son was gleefully reading them without her being aware of the difference)
  9. Haven't been on this forum a while although I used to come frequently. I had to re-register so it's definitly been awhile :) Just wanted to say Hi and properly introduce myself before I start in gabbing. I've been hs'ing for 11 years and live in WA (previously in NV and CA) we follow a loose classical format and take advantage of WA's dual entry laws with my oldest taking some classes at the high school and my younger two at a 'parent partner' school for some fluff & stuff. My kids are 14, 12 & 9. Discovered recently that event though we are super busy I need to do some reinvigorating of me and this has always been a good place for that. TTFN!
